6 Steps That Helped Me Lead Through Three Global Crises

Feeling afraid is natural. But feeling afraid every day? That's not sustainable, especially for entrepreneurs.

In 2000, I was head of the first fintech in Mexico, Finanzas Web. A company so innovative that we survived the market collapse when the dot-com bubble burst because we had capital reserves and a clear execution plan.
In 2008, the Great Recession hit, and I was in the eye of the hurricane with a business specializing in mortgages for the Hispanic market. When the bank cut our lending overnight, I lost the company and was left with $1 million in personal debt.
Third time's the charm, right? In 2020, amid COVID, my current company, Growth Institute, was prepared. We doubled revenue and made the Inc. 5000 list for the third consecutive year. We came out stronger than ever.
Same CEO. Same world. Different outcomes.
So, what changed? Better systems, deeper awareness and a disciplined mindset.

Step 1: Name the fear
The first step in managing fear is naming it. Psychologists Justin Milano and Dan Cordaro emphasize that high-performing entrepreneurs don't deny fear — they study it. When fear arises, don't suppress it. Ask: What's the fear? Where do I feel it in my body? Is it rooted in a real threat or in a future that may never happen?
Anxiety often stems from mental loops rather than concrete facts. For instance: "What if we run out of cash?" or "What if the product fails?" These fears narrow your thinking, reducing your ability to problem-solve. When you label the fear, you reclaim power over it.
Step 2: Shift the lens
Fear signals potential loss. But what if it's pointing to opportunity?
Milano and Cordaro outline three common fear mindsets:
Scarcity: Believing there's never enough.
Aversion: Resisting reality as it is.
Unworthiness: Feeling inadequate.
The moment you shift from "What might I lose?" to "What could I gain?" you take back control.

Step 3: Build systems before the storm
Jim Collins coined the term Return on Luck, which he defines as the ability to turn unexpected events—good or bad — into momentum for scaling. And here's the key insight: successful and unsuccessful companies receive the same amount of luck. The difference is in what they do with it.
How to increase your Return on Luck:
Stay alert: Opportunities rarely look like opportunities at first.
Act with discipline: Minimize emotions. Rely on data and strategy.
Learn fast: Every crisis brings a lesson. Are you listening?
Be consistent: Don't change course with every breeze. Discipline sets you free.
ROL allowed my companies to collapse or scale, depending on our preparedness. So ask yourself:
Do we have a system for cash flow management?
Do we have KPIs we monitor weekly?
Can our team execute without micromanagement?
Luck is unpredictable — but your response to it isn't. Adopting a disciplined mindset can turn uncertainty into growth and lasting success. Train for chaos before it arrives.
Step 4: Tighten your execution disciplines
In times of uncertainty, operational discipline becomes your safety net. Think of your business like a car. Without a dashboard — clear KPIs, priorities and communication rhythms — you're driving blind.
Go back to the basics:
Define your top priorities.
Hold daily and weekly huddles to maintain alignment.
Make your metrics visible and reviewed consistently.
Beyond the mechanics, reinforce your company's strategy and values in every meeting. Be vocal. Be repetitive. Leadership means becoming a constant messenger of your vision.
And don't just trust your gut. Use data. In uncertain markets, instinct can be misleading. Stay alert to trends, benchmark your performance, and course-correct early.
Finally, empower your team. Give clear direction, then step back. Agility comes from confident, decentralized execution, not from micromanagement.

Step 5. Lead with transparency and strategy
In crisis, communication becomes your most powerful tool. It's not enough to have a strategy. You must communicate it clearly and consistently.
That means:
Articulating your vision in simple, repeatable terms
Listening to your team's concerns without judgment
Staying transparent during tough calls
Leadership is not about having all the answers but showing the path forward.
Step 6: Negotiate like a pro
During economic instability, one of the most overlooked levers is your supplier relationships. While most CEOs rush to cut headcount or pause marketing, the smart ones call their vendors.
Consider this approach:
"Like you, we're feeling the pressure. Let's revisit our agreement and find a win-win."
You might be surprised how flexible suppliers become when the relationship is strong. Here are quick wins to explore:
Extended payment terms
Lower minimum commitments
Locked-in pricing for more extended periods
Proactive negotiation in times of uncertainty isn't a risk. It's strategic leadership.
You can't eliminate fear, but you can lead through it
Fear doesn't disappear as you scale; it evolves. However, so can your strategies and resilience. The best entrepreneurs don't wait for confidence to act. They act their way into confidence.
As someone who's experienced three major crises and emerged stronger on the other side, my advice is this: Don't try to outrun fear. Make it your ally.

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) — The New Mexico Office of Superintendent of Insurance has issued an emergency order for enhanced insurance protections and support for policyholders in fire-impacted areas over the next three months. This comes a day after Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham declared the Trout Fire in Grant County an emergency. Evacuation order issued for residents near Trout Fire, grows to over 24,000 acres The order requires that health insurers provide grace periods for 'premium payments, refill prescriptions early, cover out-of-network services, waive patient cost-sharing and prior authorizations, and cover replacements of essential medical supplies and equipment that were left behind due to evacuations,' according to the NM Office of Superintendent of Insurance. These protections aim to remove financial burdens and administrative hurdles to necessary medical services. In accordance to the order, property insurers are required to provide 'grace periods for premium payment and claims submission, waive deductibles, postpone cancellationsand non-renewals, and suspend late payment fees.' This includes insurers offering homeowner and automobile policies. The Office of Superintendent of Insurance added that most home owner policies cover 'Additional Living Expenses' such as hotels, meals, and other necessities for displaced policyholders. The agency's emergency hotline number for the Trout Fire is 1-833-485-1336. In a separate news release on Wednesday, the Defense Health Agency confirmed that TRICARE beneficiaries in Grant County can receive emergency prescription refills through June 27. 'Survive, nothing more': Cuba's elderly live hand to mouth

With a monthly pension barely sufficient to buy 15 eggs or a small bag of rice, Cuba's elderly struggle to make ends meet in one of Latin America's poorest and fastest-aging countries. As the communist island battles its deepest economic crisis in three decades, the state is finding it increasingly hard to care for some 2.4 million inhabitants -- more than a quarter of the population -- aged 60 and over. Sixty is the age at which women -- for men it's 65 -- qualify for the state pension which starts at 1,528 Cuban pesos per month. This is less than $13 at the official exchange rate and a mere $4 on the informal street market where most Cubans do their shopping. "Fight for life, for death is certain," vendor Isidro Manuet, 73, told AFP sitting on a sidewalk in the heart of Havana, his skin battered by years in the sun, several of his front teeth missing. "I manage to live, survive, nothing more," he said of his meager income that allows him to buy a little food, and not much else. As he spoke to AFP, Manuet looked on as small groups of people walked by his stall carrying bags full of food. They were coming out of Casalinda, one of several part government-run megastores that sells goods exclusively to holders of US dollars -- a small minority of Cubans. Most rely instead on informal stalls such as the ones Manuet and other elderly Cubans set up on sidewalks every morning to sell fruit, coffee, cigarettes, candy, used clothes and other second-hand goods. - 'Things are bad' - Near Manuet's stall, 70-year-old Antonia Diez sells clothing and makeup. "Things are bad, really bad," she sighs, shaking her head. Many of Cuba's elderly have been without family support since 2022, when the biggest migratory exodus in the country's history began amid a crisis marked by food, fuel and medicine shortages, power blackouts and rampant inflation. More beggars can be seen on Havana's streets -- though there are no official figures -- and every now and then an elderly person can be spotted rummaging through garbage bins for something to eat, or sell. The Cuban crisis, which Havana blames on decades of US sanctions but analysts say was fueled by government economic mismanagement and tourism tanking under the Covid-19 pandemic, has affected the public purse too, with cuts in welfare spending. As a result, the government has struggled to buy enough of the staples it has made available for decades to impoverished Cubans at heavily subsidized prices under the "libreta" ration book system. It is the only way many people have to access affordable staples such as rice, sugar and beans -- when there is any. Diez said she used to receive an occasional state-sponsored food package, "but it's been a while since they've sent anything." - 'No future' - This all means that many products can only be found at "dollar stores" such as Casalinda, or private markets where most people cannot afford to shop. According to the University of Havana's Center for Cuban Economic Studies, in 2023 a Cuban family of three would have needed 12 to 14 times the average minimum monthly salary of 2,100 pesos (around $17) to meet their basic food needs. Official figures show about 68,000 Cubans over 60 rely on soup kitchens run by the state Family Assistance System for one warm meal per day. At one such facility, "Las Margaritas," a plate of food costs about 13 pesos (11 dollar cents). Pensioner Eva Suarez, 78, has been going there daily for 18 months. "The country is in such need. There's no food, there's nothing," she told AFP, adding her pension is basically worthless "because everything is so expensive." Inflation rose by 190 percent between 2018 and 2023, but pensions have not kept pace. Some are losing faith in communism, brought to the island by Fidel Castro's revolution, and its unfulfilled promises such as a liter of subsidized milk for every child under seven per day. "I have nothing, my house is falling apart," said Lucy Perez, a 72-year-old economist who retired with 1,600 pesos (about 13 dollars) a month after a 36-year career. "The situation is dire. The nation has no future." It's not just the elderly suffering. Cuba was rocked by unprecedented anti-government protests in 2021, and students have been rebelling in recent months due to a steep hike in the cost of mobile internet -- which only arrived on the island seven years ago.
