Malaysia PM Anwar urges global push to end Israeli aggression, violence in Middle East

– Malaysia Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has urged the international community to act decisively to end the violence in the Middle East, calling for pressure to be placed on Israel to halt its provocations and aggression.
Datuk Seri Anwar stressed that lasting peace in the region could be achieved only if Israel ends its hostile actions.
'For genuine peace to be realised, Israel must be pressured to stop its provocative and violent behaviour towards other nations,' he told reporters in Kuching, Sarawak, on June 22.
Commenting on Iran's military response, Mr Anwar said it was expected given the earlier attacks and reiterated that Malaysia maintains a fair and balanced stance.
'When you launch attacks and kill people, of course there will be retaliation from Iran. Our position is a fair one,' he added.
Mr Anwar also expressed concern over the deepening crisis in Gaza and the broader region, citing the continued killing of civilians, including women and children, as well as escalating tensions due to strikes on Iran and foreign interference from the United States.
'Now they are attacking Iran and Iran has chosen to fight back. The intervention by external powers such as the United States will only escalate the conflict further,' he said.
He also warned that the potential closure of the Strait of Hormuz could have serious implications for the global economy.
US President Donald Trump said early on June 22 that US forces had bombed three Iranian nuclear sites.
The attacks came after Israel launched a military assault on Iran on June 13, prompting retaliatory strikes from Iran against Israel.
Emphasising Malaysia's stance, Mr Anwar said the country must continue to speak out in defence of human rights and justice.
'For me, the most important thing is the sanctity of human life and justice. Stop the violence.
'People say Iran should not respond but why is Israel allowed to act with such impunity?
'Malaysia is compelled to voice our position. We must not allow a sovereign and independent nation to be silenced when it comes to speaking out about human rights and justice,' he added. THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK

The statement has the green light from all 32 NATO members, diplomats said, but will only become official when it is approved by leaders including U.S. President Donald Trump at their summit in The Hague on Wednesday. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez had blocked an earlier version of the text, saying that committing to a 5% target would be unreasonable and counterproductive. Spain spent 1.24% of GDP on defence in 2024, according to NATO estimates Diplomats overcame Sanchez's objections by adjusting the text on the spending pledge, changing the language from "we commit" to "allies commit", diplomats said. That allowed Sanchez to claim the commitment would not apply to Spain. "We fully respect the legitimate desire of other countries to increase their defence investment, but we are not going to do so," Sanchez said in an address on Spanish television Sunday. NATO operates by consensus so all of its 32 members have to approve a statement for it to be adopted. NATO officials argue that big defence spending increases are needed to counter a growing threat from Russia and to allow Europe to take on more responsibility for its own security as the United States shifts its military focus to China. The alliance's current defence spending target is 2% of GDP but Trump insisted it should rise to 5% - although he suggested on Friday that target should not apply to the United States. Under a plan by NATO boss Mark Rutte, countries would reach 5% of GDP by boosting their core defence spending goal from 2% to 3.5% and spending a further 1.5% on related items like adapting roads and bridges for military vehicles and cyber security. Rutte had originally proposed countries meet the new target by 2032 but the deadline in the final text is 2035, according to diplomats. There will also be a review of the target in 2029. PHOTO: REUTERS US cities ramp up security after Trump's airstrikes on Iran NEW YORK – Major US cities are tightening security after President Donald Trump unleashed airstrikes on Iran, a direct military intervention that's deepened Washington's role in Israel's war with Tehran and raised concerns about potential retaliation. Iran early June 22 warned that the US attack, dubbed Operation Midnight Hammer by the Pentagon, will trigger 'everlasting consequences' and said it 'reserves all options' to respond. Police in New York, Washington, DC, and Los Angeles have since increased patrols at religious institutions, diplomatic facilities and public spaces. Officials cited no credible threats at this time but highlighted the need for vigilance. In the capital, the Metropolitan Police Department said it's closely monitoring the events in Iran and is coordinating with local, state, and federal law enforcement partners to share information and monitor intelligence. The New York Police Department said it's deployed additional officers across the city and is coordinating with the US Department of Homeland Security and other federal agencies to monitor for any potential threats. Additional resources have been allocated to religious, cultural, and diplomatic sites across the city. The Greater New York area is home to the largest Jewish population outside of Israel, with about 1.4 million people. Since 2001, the NYPD and its federal partners have disrupted about 30 plots targeting the city, the department said. Officials said those efforts reflect a broad strategy that combines intelligence gathering, overseas partnerships and rapid response capabilities – tools they're now using to assess any fallout from the US strikes on Iran. The department's Intelligence Bureau operates an international liaison programme with embedded personnel in 13 countries, including in Israel, where an officer is providing real-time assessments from the region. The NYPD also maintains a Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility, where meetings can take place without fear of listening devices. Three DHS intelligence analysts are assigned to the department, facilitating the flow of classified information and supporting joint threat analyses. Additional capabilities include a foreign linguist programme with more than 1,200 registered speakers across 85 languages, and the Domain Awareness System, a real-time surveillance and analytics platform developed in partnership with Microsoft. In Los Angeles, Mayor Karen Bass said that officials in the second largest US city are closely monitoring the situation. 'Out of an abundance of caution, LAPD is stepping up patrols near places of worship, community gathering spaces and other sensitive sites,' Ms Bass said. 'We will remain vigilant.' Spain agrees with NATO to skip 5% defence spending target
MADRID - Spain agreed with the NATO military alliance to be excluded from spending 5% of its gross domestic product on defence, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Sunday. "A 5% spending would be disproportionate and unnecessary," Sanchez said in an address on national television. "We fully respect the legitimate desire of other countries to increase their defence investment, but we are not going to do it," he said, adding Spain could meet all its commitments to NATO, in terms of staff or equipment, by spending only 2.1% of its GDP. Diplomats had said earlier on Sunday the 32 countries comprising NATO had agreed on a statement for the upcoming summit setting a goal of 5% of GDP for annual defence and security related by 2035 overcoming Spain's objection. In a letter sent on Thursday, Sanchez had told NATO chief Mark Rutte his country wanted to opt out of a new 5% spending target. The letter raised concerns that Spain would derail the whole summit. At an estimated 1.28% of GDP, Spain had the lowest proportion of expenditure on defence in the alliance last year, according to NATO estimates.
