With March having arrived, the weather is slowly getting warmer and the days are growing longer. Spring approaches, and the world seems to be awakening from a long winter slumber. To match this refreshing change, following are some energetic songs from exciting bands to wake you up and fill your days with vibrant energy.
N.Flying - "Into You"
N.Flying released "Into You," a track composed by leader Lee Seung-hyub, in June 2024 while two of the five bandmates were fulfilling their compulsory military service.
With its lively guitar rhythms and catchy whistling melody, "Into You" showcases the warm yet refreshing vocals of Lee Seung-hyub and Yoo Hwe-seung. Marking 10 years since the band's debut this year, N.Flying is now back as a full unit following the discharge of drummer Kim Jae-hyun in February. Lucy - "MP3"
Vocalist Choi Sang-yeop, bassist and producer Cho Won-sang, drummer Shin Gwang-il and violinist Shin Ye-chan, who together form Lucy, are loved for creating music that evokes childhood nostalgia.
One of the band's standout tracks, "MP3" is a B-side from the group's first full-length album, "Childhood." Blending in flute melodies, the track is a distinctly Irish-inspired tune. The band, which debuted in 2021, made a name for itself the following year by winning Mnet's "Great Seoul Invasion" in September 2022. Since the victory, the band has performed at numerous music festivals, delivering memorable live performances.
"Night View" was composed by keyboardist Chea Do-hyeon and vocalist Yun Min, with lyrics written by Yun. The track serves as an anthem for youth, celebrating the brilliance of fleeting yet precious moments. Yun's powerful, intricate vocals soar over the vibrant guitar and drums, capturing the beauty of finitude.

Salwa Bakr, Amitav Ghosh, John Banville named finalists for 14th Pak Kyongni Prize
Egyptian writer Salwa Bakr, Indian novelist Amitav Ghosh and Irish author John Banville have been nominated for the 14th Park Kyongni Award, according to the Toji Cultural Foundation on Thursday. The judging committee conducted a review of writers from around the world starting in September last year and narrowed down this year's candidates to three. The winner will be announced in September. The Park Kyongni Award is an annual international literary award based in Korea. It was established in 2011 to honor the literary legacy of novelist Pak Kyong-ni (1926-2008), renowned for her epic saga 'Toji (The Land).' The 16-volume series tells the story of five generations of a wealthy Korean family from South Gyeongsang Province, from the end of the Joseon era (1392-1910) to Japanese occupation and Korean independence. Pak wrote the story from 1969 to 1994. The literary award aims to recognize novelists worldwide who have significantly influenced the course of literature while preserving its intrinsic value, according to the Toji Cultural Foundation. The prize comes with a certificate of merit, a plaque and an award of 100 million won ($73,060). Previous recipients include inaugural winner Choi In-hoon, author of 'The Plaza,' Bernhard Schlink from Germany, Amos Oz from Israel, Ngugi wa Thiong'o from Kenya, Richard Ford from the US, Ismail Kadare from Albania and Yun Heung-gil from Korea. In 2024, French writer Sylvie Germain received the award.

Busan International Rock Festival unveils second lineup
36 teams unveiled so far, more to come Korea's longest-running international rock music event, the Busan International Rock Festival, has announced its second lineup for this year's event, featuring a strong mix of global legends and top Korean acts. The Thursday announcement revealed the addition of major artists, including Suede, one of the defining bands of the 1990s Brit-pop movement; Mika, a British singer-songwriter of Lebanese descent; Jaurim, a Korean alternative-rock powerhouse; and CNBlue, the band fronted by Busan-born vocalist Jung Yong-hwa. Acclaimed singer-songwriter Lee Seung-yoon, whose unique sound has earned him invitations from festivals nationwide, also joined the lineup. Xdinary Heroes will take the stage amid its successful world tour while Onewe, the band presenting intense yet emotional music, has also joined the list. Rising star Woodz, whose breakout hit 'Drowning' propelled him into the spotlight, is also set to take the stage. Fans can also look forward to performances from electronic rock duo Glen Check and ambient project Redoor, known for capturing the serenity of nature in sound. The lineup further expands with Japan's up-and-coming dream-pop band Muque, as well as a performance by the fully reunited Y2K. Festival favorites 10cm and Touched will also bring a balance of musicality and mainstream appeal to the stage. In addition to the main festival, a series of side events will take place. The Seoul show of 'Road to Bu-Rock,' a pre-festival concert, will be held Saturday and Sunday at Yes24 Live Hall in Gwangjin-gu. Music in PyeongChang returns with timely theme: ‘Inter Harmony'
The 22nd edition to offer 21 concerts, 14 outreach programs and educational projects The 22nd edition of Music in PyeongChang kicks off next month in Gangwon Province, exploring the timely theme of 'Inter Harmony," offering 21 mainstage concerts that bridge cultures, eras and musical traditions. Under the direction of cellist Yang Sung-won, the 11-day festival presents music inspired by encounters across cultures and generations. 'There's so much anger building in the world right now. That's why we need music that channels inspiration — works born from encounters with other regions, other folk traditions,' Yang said during a press conference. A total of 21 concerts, nine outreach concerts, five family outreach concerts and educational programs will be offered from July 23 to Aug. 2 at PyeongChang Alpensia Concert Hall, Music Tent in Daegwallyeong and various locations throughout Gangwon Province. "Some of the artists you'll hear may be familiar, while others may be new to you. Even for those you've heard before, it would be rare to experience them in the particular combinations you'll see here in PyeongChang. I've worked to bring a sense of freshness by pairing well-known artists with others in unexpected ways. My aim was to carefully structure the program by balancing internationally recognized names, artists visiting Korea for the first time, and those who appear only occasionally," he explained. Among the headliners are violinist Akiko Suwanai, cellist Bruno Cocset, pianist Kim Su-yeon and tenor Robin Tritschler, each appearing in uniquely curated programs. The celebrated Irish soprano Ailish Tynan makes her Korean debut in a recital that blends French melodie and Irish folk, while Brannon Cho and Chaowen Luo represent a new generation of globally acclaimed string soloists. Violinists Park Ji-yoon and Im Ji-young, and violist Kim Sang-jin return alongside rising stars such as Yulia Deyneka, Rei Tsujimoto and Emmanuel Strosser, forming part of the festival's signature ensemble initiatives like the PyeongChang Dream Team and Festival Strings. Baroque specialists Les Basses Reunies join from Europe, and woodwind virtuosos, including Kim Han, Kim Yu-bin and Ricardo Silva, anchor concerts that push the boundaries between tradition and innovation. Highlights of the 11-day festival range from Mahler's monumental Symphony No. 2 'Resurrection' for the opening night on July 23, to the Korean premiere of Britten's haunting chamber opera "The Turn of the Screw: Secrets and Specters." Throughout the 11-day festival, audiences will also encounter Spanish and Latin American traditions reimagined by guitarist Jose Maria Gallardo del Rey, the modernist wit of Stravinsky's "Pulcinella and The Soldier's Tale" and the emotional depth of chamber works by Elgar, Ravel and Chausson. Newly formed ensembles such as the PyeongChang Festival Strings and the PyeongChang Festival Chamber Orchestra offer fresh interpretations of classic and contemporary works, including Vaughan Williams' "Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis" and Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No. 2. The program also features the Asia premiere of David Maslanka's Wind Quintet No. 3. Committed to putting on world-class performances across Gangwon Province, the outreach program offers opportunities for local communities and residents to connect with Music in PyeongChang. This year, a total of nine concerts will be held from July 25 to July 30 in five cities and counties: Donghae, Cheorwon, PyeongChang, Gangneung and Jeongseon. The ensemble Les Bons Becs, made up of four clarinetists and one percussionist, delivers performances that seamlessly blend music with playful choreography, offering an experience that's enjoyable for all ages. Designed as a relaxed and family-friendly experience, this concert series will take place from July 29 to Aug. 2 in five locations: Yangyang, Hoengseong, Taebaek, Inje and Pyeongchang. Regarding the chamber ensemble mentorship program and master classes, Yang emphasized that these educational programs are not meant to improve technical skill. 'I asked the musicians to share their experiences in a way that encourages attentive listening and helps participants grasp the language of composers. The Music Academy in PyeongChang is not about helping students play their instruments better or win competitions. Rather, it's an academy dedicated to deepening one's understanding of music as an art form,' he added.
