Wyndham Clark Sings Familiar Tune amid US Open Locker Room Destruction
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Frustration is a common feeling among golfers when things don't go as expected on the course. Even top professionals aren't immune to taking out their anger on inanimate objects, as was the case with Wyndham Clark during the recently concluded U.S. Open. Images of the damage that Clark caused to the Oakmont locker room while venting his frustration by throwing blows were widely circulated on social media. A week later, the winner of the 2023 US Open addressed the issue after the first round of the Travelers Championship. 🚨🥾🚪 #NEW: Wyndham Clark allegedly damaged several lockers in the change room at Oakmont Country Club following a missed cut, per @TronCarterNLU. Additionally, Clark recently destroyed a T-mobile sign at the PGA Championship not long ago. Is this behaviour acceptable? — NUCLR GOLF (@NUCLRGOLF) June 15, 2025 As expected, Clark issued the apology that typically follows such behavior: "I've had a lot of highs and lows in my career, especially this year some lows. I made a mistake that I deeply regret," he said. However, Clark was equally quick to call for the issue to be put to rest: "I'm very sorry for what happened. But I'd also like to move on, not only for myself but for Oakmont, for the USGA, and kind of focus on the rest of this year and things that come up." "I still want to try to make the Ryder Cup team. I still am on the outside looking in for the FedExCup. So I'm starting to move on and focus on those things." "I made a mistake that I deeply regret. I'm very sorry for what happened." Wyndham Clark addressed his actions regarding the damaged lockers at the U.S. Open. — Golf Digest (@GolfDigest) June 19, 2025 Some players, most notably Graeme McDowell, came out in support of Clark, claiming to have been in the Denver native's shoes. However, this is the second time in less than a month that Clark has had to apologize for similar behavior. At the PGA Championship, he lost his temper again and threw his driver into a promotional fence on the 16th tee, endangering others who were in the path of the club. At the time, Clark didn't apologize through the press but rather through a statement on social media. "As professionals, we are expected to remain professional even when frustrated...I promise to better the way I handle my frustrations on the course going forward," is part of what he posted then. Watch: Rickie Fowler hits textbook shank on first hole Friday at Travelers Championship
Most people who play golf know the feeling of a good ol' fashion shank. The ball careens off the hosel of the club and comes out on a nearly horizontal line. It's the worst of misses, and it sets you up for a miserable guessing game with your swing the rest of the round: "If it happened once, is it going to happen again?" It's a horrible feeling, and it's a feeling that isn't exclusive to amateurs and weekend warriors. Even the best in the world hit a shank from time to time. Rickie Fowler joined the club Friday at the 2025 Travelers Championship. Fowler's shank came at arguably the worst time a shank can come: The very first hole. It was his second shot of the day — sitting in prime position in the fairway on the par-4 1st. 🗣️SHANK WEEK!Rickie just shanked his first approach shot of the day at @TravelersChamp. Ah, yes, the "Spanish fade." A simple approach from 112 yards went straight right, and put him in the deep fescue rough with 61 yards still left to the flag. The shank proved to be costly as Fowler made double bogey on No. 1 — but its lasting effects were felt throughout the rest of the round. More: PGA Tour leaderboard: Live updates from second round action at the Travelers Championship He shot 42 on the outward nine, making bogey or worse on all but three holes. Being that it's a signature event, there is no cut at the Travelers Championship, which is good news for Fowler, who was 5 over through 14 holes Friday on a course that has showed little teeth so far, yielding 14 scores of 66 or better Thursday.
