[Listen] Tshwane SAPS academy rape: Police captain to apply for bail
A police captain accused of raping a trainee at the Tshwane SAPS academy is scheduled to make his second appearance at the Pretoria Central Magistrate's Court for a bail application today.
Pretoria Rekord reports that Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) spokesperson Lizzy Suping said the officer was arrested by the directorate last Wednesday.
She said the 20-year-old trainee was walking with her platoon members to their sleeping quarters when she was called to the captain's office, allegedly by him.
The door was then reportedly locked, by the police captain, and Suping said he blackmailed the trainee into sleeping with him.
'He told her that if she did not sleep with him, he would write a misconduct letter regarding an incident that allegedly happened in April, where the police captain was accusing the trainee of failing to salute him.'
Suping said the suspect remains in police custody until his court appearance.
No one is above the law – minister
Police Minister Senzo Mchunu strongly condemned the sexual assault, describing it as a gross violation of the rights that police are entrusted to protect.
'We welcome the swift removal and subsequent arrest of the instructor. This alleged act is not only criminal in nature, but it is a disgraceful abuse of authority and a gross violation of the trust placed in those who are meant to shape and guide the next generation of police officers. To prey on a young recruit who has chosen to serve our nation through the SAPS is both reprehensible and inexcusable,' he said.
The Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit ensured that the victim received the necessary medical care and ongoing emotional and psychological support services.
Mchunu said such actions not only harm victims, but also undermine the work the police service collectively does.
'This incident stands in stark contrast to the values and ethics we expect of our officers. It undermines the integrity of the police service and the tireless work of the thousands of officers who serve with honour every day.
'Ipid has been tasked with the matter, and we urge them to leave no stone unturned in ensuring that justice is served. We call for swift internal processes to be followed. The perpetrator must be brought to book, and let it be a clear and resounding message – no one is above the law,' Mchunu said.

Eastern Cape woman gets 15 years for stabbing boyfriend and aunt
The Mthatha High Court sentenced 39-year-old Noncedo Mqokro to 15 years in prison. She was convicted on two counts of murder and one count of housebreaking with intent to commit an offence. The court ordered her 15-year sentences for each murder, along with an eight-year sentence for housebreaking, to run concurrently. In her guilty plea, Mqokro admitted to fatally stabbing her boyfriend, the father of her child, and her distant aunt, whom she found in bed with him. The killings took place on the night of 19 May 2024, after Mqokro attended a traditional ceremony in her home village of Nondindwa, Mcothama, in the Centane district. She told the court she had been drinking alcohol and decided to visit her boyfriend at his home in the nearby village of Khabakazi. Upon arrival, he refused to let her in when she looked through a window. She said she saw him having sex with her distant aunt, who shared her mother's clan name. In a fit of rage, Mqokro forced the door open. Retrieved a dagger from a bucket where the boyfriend usually hid it, and attacked the pair. She could not recall how many times she stabbed them, but claimed they were still alive when she left. She later confessed the attack to the boyfriend's mother and handed herself over to police the next day, after learning the two had died from their injuries. During sentencing, the court took into account a pre-sentence report which revealed that Mqokro suffered from epilepsy and received a social grant due to her condition. She had also previously escaped an abusive marriage and bore scars from past abuse allegedly inflicted by the deceased boyfriend. State Advocate Loyiso Methuso acknowledged the tragic loss of life, particularly for the children of the deceased, but confirmed that Mqokro showed remorse and needed professional support. Her youngest daughter had reportedly blamed her for the father's death. Eastern Cape Director of Public Prosecutions, Barry Madolo, welcomed the sentence. He urged individuals in abusive relationships to seek help through legal channels. 'This outcome should serve as a caution that no matter the provocation, those who commit violent crimes will face the consequences,' said Madolo. No trace of 2 men believed to be trapped in Clewer mine shaft
No trace of 2 men believed to be trapped in Clewer mine shaft A tense and desperate search continues for two men believed to be trapped deep inside a sealed-off abandoned mine shaft near Clewer. Among the missing is 45-year-old Tshepo Motsiye, who vanished over two weeks ago after reportedly entering the disused Greenside Colliery mine for illegal mining activities. Since their disappearance on June 13, families, police, mine officials, and local community members have launched an ongoing search-and-rescue operation. However, the effort has been severely hampered by the extreme hazards posed by the mine's unstable and toxic environment. As the hours turn into days, anxiety and desperation continue to mount, particularly for Tshepo's family, who are still clinging to hope for his safe return. According to Captain Vusi Mnisi of Vosman SAPS, Tshepo was last seen leaving home, telling his girlfriend that he was heading to 'Vosman Circle'. When he failed to return and stopped responding to calls, his girlfriend raised the alarm and contacted his family on June 17. 'Tshepo just didn't come back,' said his sister, Nomsa Motsiye. 'We were worried immediately, but still held on to hope. Then a man came to our house, claiming he had been underground with Tshepo and others, but that Tshepo and another man got trapped.' Thungela Resources confirmed that on June 18, they were notified by concerned family members that two individuals from the local community may have gained unauthorised access to a sealed-off underground section of Greenside Colliery.
