Government will refine SST to avoid burdening Malaysians

Altimet says PM Anwar empathetic, open to tax adjustments

SHAH ALAM – The government appears ready to review and improve the recently announced Sales and Services Tax (SST) if any shortcomings or public discomfort arise during its execution.
Lembah Jaya State Assemblyman, Syed Ahmad Syed Abdul Rahman better known as Altimet, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is a highly empathetic leader who would never allow government policies or actions to burden the people's livelihood. According to him, the voices, views and concerns of the public have never been ignored by the government.
'The Madani Government today is a government that listens.
"In its efforts to generate national revenue for a stronger and more competitive future, the government continuously strives to find the most balanced approach to increase income without burdening the people.
'I must clarify that the SST is fundamentally a progressive tax and does not target the low-income group.
"It is selectively applied and I am confident the government is open to reviewing and improving it from time to time.
"For example, there has been confusion regarding the tax on imported fruits such as apples and oranges, which we consume daily. On this matter, I believe the wisdom of the Prime Minister will ease the public's concern," he said in a statement on Wednesday.
Altimet believes the government continues to prioritise local fruits as the people's primary choice.
He said local fruit traders have the potential to benefit indirectly as reliance on imports begins to decrease.
'I believe, as has often been the case, there will be a fair and reasonable solution. Like other policies, SST is not static...it can be refined for the common good.
'In conclusion, let us continue to share our views respectfully and openly. The Madani Government may not be perfect, but it is a government that is sincere in its efforts and always ready to improve for a more stable, prosperous, and harmonious Malaysia,' he added.

MSM welcomes Finance Ministry's clarity on SST exemption mechanism for raw sugar

KUALA LUMPUR: MSM Malaysia Holdings Bhd (MSM), the producer of the national refined sugar brand 'Gula Prai', welcomes the timely clarification issued today by the Ministry of Finance regarding the Sales and Service Tax (SST) treatment of raw sugar imports. The ministry's statement today confirmed that while a five per cent sales tax will apply to raw sugar, a key input for refined sugar production, refiners may apply for tax exemptions under prescribed conditions. In a statement today, MSM said that this clarification follows MSM highlighting the potential significant cost pressures arising from the expanded SST regime during its annual general meeting on June 19, 2025. 'The group emphasised that these input cost increases could impact refined sugar pricing, which could in turn push up prices of refined sugar for industrial buyers. 'We appreciate the ministry's prompt attention to this matter and its reaffirmation of a clear pathway for eligible refiners to seek relief,' it said. MSM added that this is particularly crucial given the challenging operating environment, where retail sugar prices have been capped at RM2.85 per kilogramme since 2011 despite substantial rises in global raw sugar costs in recent years.
