Police Scotland chief appeals to young people not to carry knives
A police chief has urged young people not to carry knives, following the death of a teenager at the weekend.Kayden Moy, 16, from East Kilbride, died after a large disturbance on Irvine beach on Saturday evening. A 17-year-old boy has been charged with his murder.There was also a stabbing at Portobello beach in Edinburgh, resulting in a 16-year-old being charged with attempted murder.Police Scotland Assistant Chief Constable Tim Mairs said the incidents demonstrated the "tragic consequences" of carrying knives.
He told BBC Scotland News: "The key message to children and young people is they shouldn't be carrying knives – it is absolutely the wrong thing to do."In a direct appeal to young people he said: "You may think it's something that makes you feel more secure, you may feel its something that makes you feel part of a group, you may think in an oblique way that its somehow protecting yourself. "But the tragic consequences at the weekend demonstrate how horrific, in a second, the fact that you're carrying a knife with you can be, and how it can end lives immediately."The clear message is do not carry weapons – do not carry knives."ACC Mairs said the weekend's events clearly demonstrated the impact of carrying knives and how "one second of madness can bring so much sorrow to so many people".However, he emphasised that Scotland was still a very safe society and said public spaces, beaches and parks were still safe places for people to gather.He added that police would be patrolling these areas during the good weather.
Three teenagers have died due to knife crime in Scotland over the space of a year.ACC Mairs said that although the homicide rate was at its lowest in three years and in the past year there had been a 29% decrease in serious assaults, police were concerned about an increase in violence in schools.He said the force was working very closely with schools and campus police officers to understand why this was happening and to ensure schools were safe learning environments.He added that the carrying and use of knives and weapons by children and young people was also an increasing trend.The Scottish Violence Reduction Unit has said that younger people, aged 11-15, were now carrying knives.ACC Mairs said: "We are concerned that the average age of those involved in violence is getting younger and younger. Violence is a societal issue – we are working with partners to help address these trends."He added: "One death because of knife crime is unacceptable so forgetting trends, what happened over the weekend is tragic."

Teenager arrested after 'fire tornado' engulfs former Scots primary school
A huge inferno broke out at the building in Perth on Sunday morning. A teenager has been arrested after a massive fire broke out at a former primary school in Perth. Firefighters raced to the former Balhousie Primary School building in the city's Muirton Place just after midnight on Sunday, June 22. An eyewitness reported that the building was engulfed by a "tornado of fire and smoke". Six fire crews and two height appliances were sent to the scene, with efforts to control the blaze continuing into the early hours. An 18-year-old has since been arrested in connection with wilful fire-raising. Images from the scene show the flames coming out of the roof of the building, sending thick smoke and an orange glow into the night sky. As the flames became thicker before crews could extinguish them, they appeared to have taken hold inside the building, with broken windows showing the fire raging behind. It appears to be burning extremely close to neighbouring buildings, however residents of several properties were evacuated as a precaution, according to Police Scotland. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said two crews and one height appliance remain at the scene on Sunday morning to carry out dampening down work. There are not believed to have been any casualties in the blaze. One eyewitness told BBC Scotland News: "I drove past at about 01:30 and the roof had collapsed. There was a full fire-smoke tornado engulfing the building. "The flames began to subside about an hour later and the red glow was almost completely gone by about 03:30." She added that staff at a local garage provided coffee and water to emergency responders, with a nearby McDonald's handing out food. Dunkeld Road, Balhousie Street and Muirton Place were closed, with motorists and pedestrians advised to avoid the area. Local residents were told to keep windows and doors closed due to smoke from the scene. A Police Scotland spokesperson said: 'Emergency services are responding to a fire at a derelict building on Dunkeld Road, Perth, which was reported around 12.25am on Sunday, 22 June, 2025. 'Dunkeld Road, Balhousie Street and Muirton Place are currently closed and a number of properties are being evacuated as a precaution. 'Residents in the nearby area are asked to keep their windows and doors closed at this time. 'An 18-year-old man has been arrested in connection with wilful fireraising and enquiries are continuing." It is the second major fire in the city in just a week, after a tenement building on the corner of South Street and Scott Street in the city centre was destroyed on Saturday, June 14. The blaze left one man dead, with an eight-year-old girl and 27-year-old man taken to hospital. Two firefighters were also treated for injuries sustained while responding to the incident. Perth and Kinross Council has since said the building would need to be completely flattened due to the damage.

Families to march against knife crime through streets after teen deaths
A march against knife violence is to take place through the streets of Glasgow on Sunday following the deaths of three teenagers. Starting at 1pm, the Parents Against Knives march will be joined by the family of Kory McCrimmon, who died after an attack involving a bladed weapon on May 31, 2024. His family said the 16-year-old's life 'will not be in vain' as they urged others to join the march. The 16-year-old died after he was found seriously injured in Greenfield Park in the east end of Glasgow. A 14-year-old was last month sentenced to five years detention after admitting culpable homicide. Police Scotland Amen Teklay, 15, and Kayden Moy, 16. The march comes in the wake of the deaths of teenagers Amen Teklay and Kayden Moy in separate incidents in recent weeks. In a statement issued through Victim Support Scotland, Kory's family previously said: 'Kory McCrimmon's young life was a brushstroke in time but we his family wish for his death to make a difference: Kory's life will not be in vain. 'Our aim here is to continue highlighting the increase in deaths and danger by knife and violent crime. Our sons and daughters are more than statistics, they deserve better. 'Kory's parents are very clear: if we can prevent at least one more family going through this life-shattering agony, we have gone a long way in our mission, but let's go further. 'We walk in Kory's name but we stand for all those lives lost or maimed to knife violence: too much, too many. No more. 'Come join our walk and lend your hearts and voices to making our streets, our young people and our lives safer.' Two boys aged 14 and 16 have appeared in court charged with murder following the death of 15-year-old Amen in the Maryhill area of Glasgow on March 5. 'We support the Parents Against Knives walk, organised entirely by the McCrimmon family in memory of their son Kory, which will undoubtedly help draw attention to this growing crisis. 'These are complex and sensitive situations which require a multi-agency response from the Scottish Government, victim support organisations, police, social work, youth work and others to work together to tackle knife crime and the devastation it causes. People across Scotland deserve to feel safe in their own communities.'
