OPEN// PM hails Egypt-Serbia deal as turning point in bilateral relations
CAIRO, June 17 (MENA) – Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli said that Egypt's free trade agreement with Serbia, which was signed in July 2024 and is set to take effect soon, will significantly expand trade volume, investment flows, and sectoral cooperation between the two countries.
Madbouli made the remarks during a meeting with Serbian Prime Minister Djuro Macut, at the New Administrative Capital. The session marked Macut's first official foreign visit since taking office and focused on strengthening bilateral relations and regional partnerships.
Both sides discussed expanding cooperation in infrastructure, agriculture, energy, tourism, and labor.
Madbouli welcomed Serbia's plans to open a trade representation office at its embassy in Cairo. He invited Serbian companies to participate in infrastructure and construction projects in Egypt, citing the experience of Egyptian firms across regional markets.
The PM called for expanding trade in agricultural commodities, particularly Serbian wheat, corn, and sunflower oil.
He discussed opportunities for cooperation in natural gas, noting Egypt's LNG capabilities and Serbia's recent completion of a pipeline connection with Bulgaria.
Madbouli also supported the resumption of direct Air Serbia flights to Cairo and proposed simplifying visa procedures for tourists, workers, and business professionals to improve travel and investment flow between the two countries.
The premier confirmed that preparations are ongoing for the 19th session of the Egypt-Serbia Joint Economic Committee in the second half of 2025.
Additionally, he expressed appreciation for Serbia's support of Egypt's nominee for the post of director-general of UNESCO and its vote in favor of Palestine's full membership at the United Nations.
Madbouli warned of the impact of growing tensions between Iran and Israel and stressed the need for a ceasefire to prevent further instability in the region.

CAIRO, June 19 (MENA) - Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty held a meeting on Thursday with members of the Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping, and Peacebuilding (CCCPA) as part of efforts to follow up on the center's activities, particularly regarding peace and security on the African continent. The move comes in preparation for the fifth edition of the Aswan Forum for Sustainable Peace and Development. The meeting reviewed the center's recent activities and training programs aimed at enhancing capacity building in areas of conflict resolution, peacekeeping, and peacebuilding, especially in sisterly African countries; within the framework of Egypt's support for the continent's peace and development agenda, the foreign ministry said in a statement. The meeting also touched on ongoing preparations for the fifth edition of the Aswan Forum for Sustainable Peace and Development, scheduled for October 19-20, with high-level African and international participation along with thought leaders, entrepreneurs, and civil society organizations. Abdelatty emphasized the pivotal role played by CCCPA as a tool of preventive diplomacy and praised the tangible achievements it has made in recent years as regards training both civilian and military cadres from various countries, thereby enhancing Egypt's status as a regional and international hub of expertise in areas of peace and security. He also affirmed the need to continue developing the center's programs in line with the growing challenges facing peacekeeping and peacebuilding efforts while paying special attention to empowering women and youth in these areas, in accordance with the African Union's Agenda 2063. OPEN// Egypt reaffirms call for holistic approach to refugee issues
CAIRO, June 20 (MENA) - Egypt has emphasized the importance of addressing refugee issues through a comprehensive approach that balances both humanitarian and development dimensions. Such a strategy aims to enhance the resilience of host communities while simultaneously supporting peace efforts that tackle the root causes of displacement in refugees' countries of origin, helping to create conditions for safe, voluntary, and dignified return and preventing the recurrence of crises, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement Friday marking World Refugee Day. Egypt reaffirmed its commitment to continued cooperation with international organizations concerned with refugee affairs, particularly the UNHCR, and its ongoing efforts at the regional and international levels to support conflict resolution, peacebuilding, and sustainable development. The ministry said Egypt has long served as a safe haven for those forced to leave their homes under dire circumstances. Currently, the country hosts 10 million refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants from 62 different nationalities, and continues to uphold its international obligations in this regard, it added. Egypt ranked second globally in the number of asylum applications filed in 2024, the statement said. The country adopts a dignity-centered policy toward refugees and asylum seekers, ensuring freedom of movement and access to basic services comparable to those provided to Egyptian citizens, thereby facilitating their integration into society, it added. In a global context marked by escalating crises and armed conflicts, particularly in the Middle East, with refugee numbers reaching unprecedented levels worldwide, Egypt stressed that international cooperation remains the only effective and sustainable path to address refugee issues in all their dimensions. The ministry also highlighted that with the adoption of Egypt's first national asylum law in December 2024 as the first North African country to pass such legislation. Cairo reiterates the need to intensify global efforts to ensure fair and sustainable implementation of burden- and responsibility-sharing principles, including by mobilizing necessary resources to support host countries in sustaining and enhancing services provided to refugees and host communities alike, the statement concluded.
