Security guards do not have authority to ask for MyKad, says NRD
PUTRAJAYA: Security guards do not have the authority or right to request, hold or scan Malaysian identity cards (MyKad), says the National Registration Department (NRD).
In a statement, the NRD said only five categories of officers have such authority under Regulation 7(1) of the National Registration Regulations 1990, namely NRD officers, police officers, Customs officers, military personnel on duty as well as civil servants authorised by the National Registration director-general.
"Any action by security guards to request or keep identity cards is against the law," it said.
The NRD also said using electronic devices to scan MyKad data is also not allowed as this is subject to the Personal Data Protection Act 2010.
"Processing personal data by private parties is subject to the Personal Data Protection Act 2010, which sets out guidelines and obligations to protect an individual's personal information," said the NRD.
This follows a recent viral post on social media where it was claimed a security guard had used an electronic device to scan a MyKad, sparking questions about its legality.
NRD advised the public not to hand over their identity cards to any unauthorised individual and to report any violations to the authorities immediately. – Bernama

Miri armed robbery gang nabbed within 24 hours
KUALA LUMPUR: Police arrested a group of armed robbers in less than 24 hours after a robbery at a house in Taman Viana, Jalan Bakam, Buletin TV3 reported. Miri district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said a team was immediately dispatched to the double-storey semi-detached house after receiving an emergency call via the 999 hotline. "All suspects have been remanded for seven days from June 20 to 27 to assist with further investigations," he said. He also reminded the public to stay vigilant and enhance the security of their homes by installing fences, grills, closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras, and alarm systems.
