Lions Goliath and Coralie escape circus life to find freedom in South Africa

In a heartwarming turn of events, two lions, Goliath and Coralie, have stepped into a new chapter of their lives after spending over a decade confined in a cramped circus cage in France. Today, they bask in the African sunshine, roaming freely in a sprawling 2.5-acre enclosure at the Animal Defenders International (ADI) Wildlife Sanctuary, located in South Africa.
Their remarkable journey began with a generous airlift funded by Qatar Airways Cargo as part of their WeQare programme, which emphasises the importance of animal welfare. Accompanied by ADI President Jan Creamer, Goliath and Coralie have traded their truck-bound cage for the vast, open plains that echo the lands of their ancestors.
'When you see these two magnificent lions living so close to what nature intended, it shows how wrong it is to keep them in circus cages, just for entertainment,' Creamer stated. 'Goliath and Coralie lived the first half of their lives in a cage on a truck; now they get to live as lions should.'

The rescue of these lions is part of a significant movement against the use of wild animals in circuses, aptly named the Stop Circus Suffering campaign. This initiative has resulted in more than 50 countries, including seven US states, implementing bans on the exploitation of wild animals for entertainment purposes. The ADI Wildlife Sanctuary is dedicated to enforcing these protective bans.
Based in London, ADI has proactively engaged in numerous rescue operations across Latin America, helping to liberate wild animals from circuses in Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, and Guatemala. These efforts have included impressive airlifts that have seen 33, 25, and 17 lions, along with 40 monkeys rescued at a time.
Due to the extended abuse, confinement, and in-breeding that Goliath and Coralie have endured, returning them to the wild is not a viable option. The ADI Wildlife Sanctuary stands as a crucial refuge for animals like them, ensuring they live out their days in a safe and natural environment.

WATCH: Youth choir thrills as Kruger sunset and bush sounds play along
The Ndlovu Youth Choir received a well-deserved 'golden buzzer' from the Kruger National Park audience at Friday night's (June 13) Kruger Concert for Conservation organised by the SANParks Honorary Rangers. The choir first shot to fame in 2019 when they ended in the top 10 of America's Got Talent, stealing the hearts of the judges and audiences in the process. From humble beginnings as a choir from a remote village in Limpopo, the group's new-found fame took them on a global journey, performing, producing music albums and garnering millions of views on social media platforms. With perfect weather and a magical setting, the evening started with the 500 guests enjoying harvest table delicacies and sipping on a variety of great wines, gin and bubbly. WATCH THE VIDEO HERE: Set against the sunset canvas of red and orange and the life-size Honorary Rangers elephants standing tall next to the main stage, the Skukuza runway was transformed. Better ambience could not have been asked for when the concert commenced with the Lowveld group, Meisie Music, featuring Naomi Tagg and Janette Rottcher on violins, with Lizanne Barnard on piano, vocals, flute and drum. Their renditions of 'The Fire Within', 'My Sarie Marais', 'Now We are Free' and 'Mamela' lay the foundation for the rest of the programme. With everyone in high spirits, the internationally acclaimed Ndlovu Youth Choir burst onto the stage after a short break, filling the air with vibrant song and dance. Crowd favourites like 'My African Dream', 'Shosholoza', Toto's 'Africa', and a twist on Kurt Darren's song 'Kaptein' had everyone tapping their feet. You could hear a pin drop when their adaptation of 'Nessun Dorma', with its distinct African sounds, was performed. The audience rewarded it with a standing ovation. Even more unexpected was the rendition of 'Bohemian Rhapsody', unlike anything heard before. Ralf Schmitt, the co-founder and artistic director of the Ndlovu Youth Choir, proudly announced that the official release of the song will take place in the next few weeks. The youngsters' powerhouse vocals, irresistibly combined with mesmerising choreography and infectious energy, ignited the audience, and by the time they played out with 'Pata Pata', everyone was on their feet. The evening not only shared a musical message of hope, love and cohesion, but also kindled the African spirit of those in attendance. The main sponsors, First National Bank and Suzuki Nelspruit, were equally impressed with the evening. Head of fundraising for the Honorary Rangers Lowveld Region, Linda Pieters, said the event exceeded all expectations. The book, which has been three years in the making, reflects Michael's deeply personal journey and cultural awakening during his short-term studies in China. More than just a travel memoir, 'China Through My Eyes' explores themes of global identity, youth empowerment, and intercultural understanding - told through the authentic voice of an African who has experienced life beyond his borders and returned inspired to share. 'This is not just my story,' says Mayalo. 'It's a story for every young person who dreams of seeing the world, learning from it, and bringing something back to build their own communities.' The China–South Africa Youth Night is a symbolic event celebrating the growing ties between the two nations, and Mayalo's book will be one of its highlights. One person, who sent us a short video clip, said South African's favourite captain asked what he should order and a man suggested the chicken-schnitzel bagel. in the end, he got that and a bagel dog. This Sunday the Springboks will start their preparation in Cape Town for next Saturday's highly anticipated Qatar Airways Cup clash, where the Barbarians face the Springboks for the first time on South African soil. Kolisi will be in the city for this and likely spotted more around town making fans' days for them. The South African rugby hero was greeted with applause and shouts of praise from lunch-time diners at New York Bagel in the east part of the city shortly after midday today when he ran on to get a take away. 'People were cheering for him, and ululating. It really was something to see,' said another person. 'He is such a humble amazing man - a true hero." Kolisi just a day ago posted videos on his Tik Tok enjoying traditional African food including umngqusho with fellow Sharks player Aphelele Onke Okuhle Fassi in Johannesburg. The two were enjoying the home-style food at Zoo Lake's Sakhumzi restaurant . 'I'm in Jozi. I needed a little bit of African food. I just want to go home. Trotters, veggies and samp. Fasi what are you eating?' Kolisi said in the video. Fassi was enjoying some samp and tripe at the restaurant at the Zoo Lake.
