Top-tier hockey returning to Kalgoorlie-Boulder

West Australian25-04-2025

Five internationals are in line to showcase their skills next month when the Eastern Goldfields Hockey Association hosts a Stiles Electrical Premier League double-header for the second consecutive year.
The 2025 Goldfields Festival of Hockey, starting on May 15, will be headlined on May 17 with women's and men's Premier League matches between Whitford and YMCC.
Those clashes are complemented by community events and elite development sessions, supported by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, and ERM.
This year's program is being launched with Hockey WA's ground-breaking Bridging the Gap course — designed to strengthen communication and collaboration between coaches and umpires.
Local officials will hone their skills at an umpires' briefing and members of the EGHA's academy will be trained by elite coaches.
Instructional clinics will take place at local schools on May 16, followed by a Welcome to Hockey celebration that night.
Headline matches on May 17 are preceded by a junior clinic, led by Stiles Electrical Premier League players, and regular EGHA fixtures.
Both legs of the Premier League double-header will be broadcast live and free on Live Hockey WA.
YMCC's men's squad leads the standings and the club's newly promoted women's team has exceeded expectations to be in fifth position.
Both Whitford teams are chasing their first wins this season — setting up an intriguing double-header in neutral territory.
Jade Smith, Zoe Newman, Cooper Burns, Maddison Brooks, and Penny Squibb are among the internationals earmarked for the Goldfields trip.
The Premier League double-header on May 17 opens with the women's clash at 5.30pm.

Wirtz wants to 'win everything' for Liverpool after record move

Florian Wirtz said he wants to win it all at Liverpool after completing a blockbuster move from Bayer Leverkusen on Friday, which could reportedly rise to a Premier League record fee. Reports in England said the Premier League champions will pay an initial £100 million ($134 million) for Wirtz, comfortably surpassing their own record outlay, with a further £16 million in performance-related add-ons making it a British record deal. However, German media suggested the fee could be even higher, starting at 130 million euros (£111 million, $149 million) with add-ons taking it to 150 million euros. One of European football's elite young stars, Wirtz has been hailed as one of the "best in the world" by former Leverkusen coach and ex-Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso, who is the new boss of Real Madrid. "I would like to win everything every year!" Wirtz told the club's website. "In the end, we want to be successful. Last season they won the Premier League so my goal is for sure to win it again and also to go further in the Champions League. I'm really ambitious." The 22-year-old played a crucial role in Leverkusen's greatest season as they claimed a first-ever Bundesliga title and the German Cup in 2023/24 without losing a single game under Alonso. Their only defeat that season, during which Wirtz was crowned Bundesliga player of the year, came in the Europa League final to Atalanta, denying Leverkusen a memorable treble. Bayern Munich restored their grip on the German game last season, with Leverkusen a distant second, and Wirtz is joining an exodus from the BayArena. Netherlands defender Jeremie Frimpong has already made the move from Leverkusen to Liverpool last month. - 'New adventure' - "I'm really excited to have a new adventure in front of me," added Wirtz, who turned down the option of joining Bayern for the move to England. "This was also a big point of my thoughts: that I want to have something completely new, to go out of the Bundesliga and to join the Premier League." After largely keeping their powder dry in the transfer market during Arne Slot's first season in charge, the Reds are splashing out to strengthen a side that romped to a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title. Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez is poised to make the move to Anfield in a £40 million deal. Liverpool have also been linked with Newcastle striker Alexander Isak and Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi. Where Wirtz's fits into Slot's plans remains to be seen. He largely played behind a central striker at Leverkusen and has operated from a wider role for Germany. A return of 57 goals and 65 assists in 197 games for Leverkusen is evidence that he carries a threat both as a creator and a goalscorer. "The people say I'm a creative player, and I hope I can bring this creativity to the team and also the joy on the pitch," said Wirtz. "I try to make assists, goals and run for the team to defend. I hope I can just make the team one step better." Liverpool are already blessed with an abundance of forward options, with Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo all offering a goal threat. However, Diogo Jota, Darwin Nunez and Federico Chiesa now face even stiffer competition to get into Slot's starting line-up, raising the prospect of Liverpool selling some of that trio to free up further transfer resources.

Flamengo give Chelsea the Blues, Bayern win again

Flamengo have overturned a first-half deficit to defeat Chelsea 3-1 in their Club World Cup clash, a result that gives the Brazilians pole position in Group D. Second-half goals from Bruno Henrique, Danilo and Wallace Yan secured the South American side their second consecutive win in the tournament. Pedro Neto's early strike had put Chelsea ahead but the Premier League side squandered several opportunities to extend their lead, allowing Flamengo to stage a stirring comeback. The Brazilians scored two goals in quick succession through Henrique and Danilo, in the 62nd and 65th minutes, which was followed by Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson being shown a straight red for a nasty studs-up challenge three minutes later. Flamengo wrapped up the victory with Yan's strike in the 83rd minute. The result leaves Chelsea second with three points while Esperance de Tunis and Los Angeles FC have yet to register a point, both sides having a game in hand. At the Hard Rock Stadium, Bayern Munich beat Boca Juniors 2-1, thanks to goals from Harry Kane and Michael Olisi to move to the top of Group C. Bayern reignited the flickering flame of European honours after battling through a tense, fiery showdown to storm into the last 16. Backed by a roaring sea of blue-and-yellow clad fans who turned the Hard Rock Stadium into a noisy outpost of their "Bombonera", Boca Juniors fought fiercely, but Bayern's resilience shone through in the closing stages. After Kane gave the German champions an early lead, Boca equalised through Miguel Merentiel, only for Olise to score a late winner. Boca, on one point, remain in contention as they face amateurs Auckland City in the last round of matches while Bayern take on Benfica, who are second after their 6-0 drubbing of Auckland City in Orlando. Ángel Di María and Leandro Barreiro each scored two goals to help Benfica in a game that was delayed at half-time because of thunder and lightning. Di María, who teamed with Lionel Messi to win the 2022 World Cup with Argentina, netted his first goal from the penalty spot deep into added at the end of the first half. His second, and the team's sixth, was again from the penalty spot and deep in added time at the end of the match. Auckland City exchanged counterattacks with the Portuguese powerhouse in the first half of the Group C match, but were still outshot 18-1. Vangelis Pavlidis made it 2-0 in the 53rd minute, Renato Sanches added a third a short time later and Barreiro then scored a pair of goals to increase the lead to 5-0. In Nashville, Youcef Belaïli scored in the 70th minute and goalkeeper Ben Said saved a penalty deep in second-half stoppage time as Esperance Tunis defeated Los Angeles FC 1-0. Referee Espen Eskas awarded a very late spot kick following a video review, ruling Khalil Guenichi had felled Marlon in the area. But Denis Bouanga drove his ensuing penalty kick into the dive of Said, the final salvo in a result that eliminated LAFC (0-2-0, 0 points) from tournament contention. Flamengo give Chelsea the Blues in Club World Cup

The result leaves Chelsea second with three points while Esperance de Tunis and Los Angeles FC have yet to register a point, both sides having a game in hand. Flamengo began brightly, pressing Chelsea high and forcing defensive errors, but they failed to capitalise on early chances as Luiz Araujo, Giorgian de Arrascaeta and Ayrton Lucas were denied by Chelsea keeper Robert Sanchez. However, Chelsea struck first in the 13th minute after Flamengo fullback Wesley sliced a clearance attempt and lost his footing, gifting the ball to Neto. The Portuguese winger raced unmarked into the box and slotted a composed finish past Agustin Rossi to give Chelsea the lead. The goal shifted momentum, with Chelsea dominating possession and creating further chances. Malo Gusto and Liam Delap had efforts saved by Rossi. Flamengo also had a great chance, with Enzo Fernandez clearing a Gerson volley off the line just before half-time. Chelsea also appealed unsuccessfully for a penalty when Fernandez appeared to be held in the box. Flamengo, however, roared back into contention after the break. Bruno Henrique, introduced as a substitute, made an immediate impact in the 62nd minute. Gerson's cross found Gonzalo Plata at the far post, whose clever header set up Henrique for a simple tap-in to equalise. Just three minutes later, Flamengo took the lead from a corner. Henrique rose highest to head the ball back across the box, where Danilo pounced to fire home from close range. Chelsea's troubles deepened when Jackson, who had just come off the bench, was sent off in the 68th minute for a reckless studs-up challenge on Ayrton Lucas. Flamengo sealed the victory in the 83rd minute when Yan, another substitute, slotted home a rebound after a surging run from the right by Plata.
