Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Beed district police have invoked the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against a gang of dacoits involved in a high-profile theft on April 7 when they looted equipment worth ₹12.9 lakh from Avada company's wind turbine installation site at Vida village in Kej taluka.

The site's watchman, Akash Bhaskar Jadhav (26), and his colleague, Abhijit Dundhav, filed a complaint in this regard. Jadhav said the incident occurred on April 7. Around 11.45pm, 14 unidentified people arrived at the location. When the complainants confronted them, four of them assaulted the duo with wooden sticks and tied them up. The remaining 10 climbed up a ladder into the wind turbine's structure and stole key components — including a rotor cable (Rs2 lakh), starter cable (Rs8.1 lakh) and earthing cable (Rs2.8 lakh) — together worth Rs12.9 lakh.
An FIR was filed under IPC section 310 (2) at Kej police station and a detailed investigation launched. On April 14, the Kej police and Beed's local crime branch teams arrested four of the accused — Baban Sardar Shinde (40) of Nandurghat, Dhanaji Ravji Kale (23) of Terkheda in Dharashiv, Mohan Hari Kale (30) and Lalasahab Sakharam Pawar (26) of Dasmegaon. Six other members of the gang have been identified and are absconding.
Police recovered stolen property — including copper wire and a four-wheeler — worth Rs9 lakh from the arrested men. Beed superintendent of police Navneet Kanwat said, "Investigations revealed that the gang has carried out 11 serious crimes in Beed and Dharashiv districts, including armed robberies, burglaries and grievous assaults within Kej, Neknur, Dhoki and Vashi police station limits."
Kej police inspector Vaibhav Patil prepared a proposal to invoke MCOCA based on the criminal history and organised nature of the gang. The proposal was submitted to Kanwat on May 13 and forwarded to special IG Virendra Mishra at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, who granted the sanction on May 29.
"Subsequently, MCOCA sections 3 (1) (ii), 3 (2) and 3 (4) were invoked. The case has been transferred to assistant SP Kamlesh Meena of Kej for further investigation," said Kanwat.

Cash, jewellery worth over Rs9L stolen from 2 bungalows in Nashik
Nashik: Two bungalows on Mahalaxmi Temple Road were burgled in the early hours of Friday, with cash and jewellery amounting to over Rs9.3 lakh reported stolen. The Upnagar police station has registered a case under sections 331 (housebreaking) and 305 (theft) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanahita (BNS). According to the police, unidentified individuals broke into the two adjacent, unoccupied bungalows sometime between 12:01am and 6am on Friday. From one bungalow, thieves made off with Rs40,000 in cash and gold and silver jewellery valued at Rs8.1 lakh. The second bungalow reported stolen articles worth Rs78,000. The thefts came to light when an acquaintance of one of the owners noticed the open main doors of the bungalows. He then informed one of the owners, leading to the registration of the police complaint. "We will check the CCTV footage in and around the area to determine if any movement of the burglars was spotted," a police officer said. House break-ins and thefts are a concern in Nashik city, considering that over 200 cases are registered every year, while the detection rate is less than 30 per cent. The police have been constantly appealing to the people to deploy security guards and install CCTV cameras in their respective areas. This can help in detecting the criminals, and the cameras also act as a deterrent for such offences.

Delhi Police arrest key member of Thak-Thak gang on run for over 5 years
The Delhi Police Crime Branch on Thursday arrested Suraj alias Michael, a notorious criminal who had been evading law enforcement for over five years, officers said Saturday. Suraj is allegedly a key member of the Thak-Thak gang, which has been actively operating in Delhi and nearby regions for over a decade, the police said. The gang is infamous for its involvement in organised crimes such as robbery, burglary, snatching, motor vehicle theft, and possession of illegal arms. Suraj has been implicated in around 30 criminal cases registered across various police stations, the police said. The arrest occurred after a case registered in 2020 at Ambedkar Nagar police station was filed under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA). The First Information Report (FIR) named gang leader P Silva and his associates, including Suraj, for their involvement in a wide range of organised criminal activities. According to the police, due to the gang's structured operations and blatant disregard for the law, provisions of MCOCA were invoked to dismantle their operations. While several other members of the gang were apprehended during the initial investigation, Suraj managed to evade arrest and was declared a Proclaimed Offender by the court in December 2024. 🚨🔥 SENSATIONAL CATCH by SR | CRIME BRANCH 🔥🚨 💣 Dreaded accused wanted in MCOCA ARRESTED after 5 YEARS ! 👤 DREADED 'Thak-Thak' Gang Member 🧨 Involved in 30+ CASES of Robbery, Arms, MV Theft & More! ⚖️ WANTED in case of PS Ambedkar Nagar | MCOCA Imposed 🕵️♂️ Evaded arrest… — Crime Branch Delhi Police (@CrimeBranchDP) June 21, 2025 Aditya Gautam, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Crime Branch, said, 'The team developed intelligence to narrow down Suraj's location. After continuous monitoring and analysis of multiple leads, the suspect's movements were tracked to the Inderpuri area of Delhi. On June 19, the team successfully apprehended the fugitive during a targeted operation.' During questioning, Suraj allegedly admitted to being a long-time associate of gang leader Silva and disclosed that he had been actively involved in the gang's operations since 2013. The police said he also revealed that despite suffering a serious road accident nearly a decade ago, he stuck to his criminal lifestyle. To avoid detection, Suraj had relocated from Ambedkar Nagar to Inderpuri, where he continued illegal activities while staying under the radar of law enforcement. Authorities are now reviewing his involvement in other unsolved cases and are expected to expand the investigation to trace any remaining associates still at large.

Builder booked under MCOCA for repeatedly cheating homebuyers
NAVI MUMBAI: The Navi Mumbai police have invoked the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against a builder accused of repeatedly cheating homebuyers, following a fresh complaint filed earlier this month. Builder booked under MCOCA for repeatedly cheating homebuyers The accused, Ranjit Bhalchandra Naik, proprietor of Samarth Krupa Developers, was arrested on June 19 after a 51-year-old woman, Ahmadi Abdurabh Mulla, alleged that he defrauded her of ₹ 3.5 lakh on the pretext of offering a discounted flat and shop in Nerul. According to the complaint registered at Nerul police station on June 9, Naik not only failed to deliver the promised property but also allegedly threatened her when she demanded a refund. Police said Naik had offered the complainant a 950 sq. ft. flat and a 450 sq. ft. shop in the 'Shivam Classic' building at Sector 23, Darave, Nerul, for ₹ 45 lakh — significantly below market price. Mulla claimed to have made payments via cheque, online transfers, and cash between May 2023 and early 2024. During the investigation, officers discovered that Naik was a repeat offender, with at least four similar cheating cases already registered against him at the same police station. 'His repeated involvement in such cases indicated a pattern of organised criminal activity,' said a senior officer from Nerul police station. 'We submitted a proposal to invoke MCOCA to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone-1, which was approved.' Naik was produced in court on Friday and remanded to four days of police custody. Originally affiliated with the BJP Yuva Morcha as its Navi Mumbai general secretary, Naik is no longer associated with the party. 'He had switched to the NCP during the last assembly elections,' clarified BJP Navi Mumbai president Dr Rajesh Patil. 'The Yuva Morcha unit was disbanded, but since the alleged offence occurred during his tenure, the party will fully cooperate with investigators if approached.' Police said the use of MCOCA reflects the organised and serial nature of the offences, enabling them to pursue stricter legal measures and deeper financial scrutiny. Investigations into the builder's dealings and potential other victims are ongoing.
