When Trevor Peters stepped down as head coach of the Eastern Dukes' under-16 AAA program recently, the Chelton, P.E.I., resident did not rule out a return to coaching.

Peters, at the time, acknowledged it would have to be the right situation with the right people. Peters found that fit and was recently named head coach of the Charlottetown Island Coastal Knights of the New Brunswick/P.E.I. Major Under-18 Male Hockey League.

'Once Will (Zafiris) decided he wasn't coming back (as head coach) this year, Trevor was one of the guys we had in the back of our minds targeted,' said Glenn Gaudet, president of the Knights' board of directors. 'He did a terrific job with the Dukes this year.

'He had a bit of a stint with the Knights a couple of years ago and because of circumstances beyond anybody's control, it didn't last very long. I knew he probably had some interest in coming back to the program.'

Gaudet contacted and met with Peters a couple of weeks ago.

'I laid out what the program was all about, what we are looking for, and had a great chat with him,' said Gaudet. 'He's a wealth of knowledge and he has a great hockey background, and we think he'll be really good for the program.'

Peters described the conversation with Gaudet as open and honest given his situation a couple of years ago.

'My concerns were addressed so I think the opportunity is there and I'm excited,' Peters told The Guardian in a phone interview on May 9.

Peters, who coached the Dukes to the East Coast Ice Jam tournament, Spud minor hockey tournament and provincial playoff championship victories last season, said two big factors played in his decision to take on the Knights' position.
Article content
'One is unfinished business from a couple of years ago,' said Peters. 'That, for sure, was a factor, as well as the opportunity given the age group and the level of the players.
Article content
'It's a huge honour, to be honest, to be working with players of that stature and being a part of their hockey journey as they move towards major junior, junior A or wherever their pathway goes.'
Article content
'I take that as an honour, a challenge and an opportunity I can bring some of the experiences I have had – some of the mentors I have had over my life – and bring that to help them be better people and players,' said Peters. 'It is a critical year in that it is the draft year (for a lot of players) and paints the picture for their hockey future.'

The glow might not be off the London Knights' 2025 Memorial Cup championship, but the push toward next season and beyond is well underway. FLAMES RETOOL TRACKER: Potential options on defence at the NHL Draft

If there's one thing that's become clear as we've looked through the state of the defence in our Flames Retool Tracker series this week, it's that the organization is well-stocked with young talent on the blue line. Article content That makes it pretty unlikely that the Flames will take a defenceman with their first of two first-round picks at the NHL Draft later this month. Article content Article content Article content Measurements: 6-foot-1, 192 lbs. Article content The skinny: It's not just that Brzustewicz's brother, Hunter, is one of the most highly regarded prospects in the Flames system and could be part of the blue-line puzzle next season. Henry also played big minutes for the Knights as they won the Memorial Cup this year and was one of the big risers on most draft boards as the season progressed. Scouts praise him for his super-high hockey IQ and his dependability on both ends of the ice, while acknowledging there's room for him to be more assertive offensively. Brzustewicz is expected to be picked in the second round and it would be a great story if the Flames wound up with both brothers. Article content Article content Article content Measurements: 6-foot-4, 200 lbs. Article content The skinny: The son of eight-time Canadian long ball champion Lisa Vlooswyk is a defensive defenceman who brings real physicality to the ice and that could have real value for a Flames team that already has its fair share of offensively minded blueliners in its system. FC Hockey's draft guide credits Vlooswyk for his physical presence, positioning and stick work and notes that he 'excels in denying net-front access (and) tying up threats without losing structure' — and that's exactly what coaches like in a defenceman. If he's available in the later rounds, the Flames just might look at bringing another Calgary kid home.

Overagers Jacob Julien, Auston Elliott and Landon Sim have ow officially graduated. Story continues below advertisement Julien has signed with the Winnipeg Jets, Sim has signed with the Toronto Marlboros and Elliott is set to go to UMass-Lowell next year in the NCAA. One of the biggest question marks for London heading into next season will be what the San Jose Sharks decide to do with Sam Dickinson. The Knights Most Valuable Player will be 19 years old and while he will still have junior eligibility, there could be an opportunity for him to stay with the Sharks in the National Hockey League. Next up for the OHL will be the release of the 2025-26 schedule and an announcement regarding possible changes to the 2026 OHL Priority Selection.
