'Deserves Greater Backing': Shashi Tharoor Lauds PM Modi, Operation Sindoor Outreach Mission
Last Updated: Shashi Tharoor praised PM Modi's energy and India's unified diplomatic outreach after 'Operation Sindoor' as a strong global message against terrorism. Shashi Tharoor has opined that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's energy, dynamism and willingness to engage 'deserves greater backing", and that the country's diplomatic outreach following 'Operation Sindoor' was a moment of national resolve and effective communication. 'Prime Minister Narendra Modi's energy, dynamism and willingness to engage remain a prime asset for India on the global stage, but deserve greater backing," Shashi Tharoor remarked in a column in The Hindu. 'The diplomatic outreach following 'Operation Sindoor' was a moment of national resolve and effective communication. It affirmed that India, when united, can project its voice with clarity and conviction on international platforms," Tharoor said. 'The lessons learned — the power of unity, the efficacy of clear communication, the strategic value of soft power, and the imperative of sustained public diplomacy — will undoubtedly serve as guiding principles as India navigates an increasingly complex international landscape, leveraging its three Ts and always striving for a more just, secure, and prosperous world," he added. Shashi Tharoor led a multi-party delegation to relevant world capitals to highlight India's stand against Pakistan-sponsored terrorism and its zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism. The delegation, led by Tharoor, included Shambhavi Chaudhary (Lok Janshakti Party), Sarfaraz Ahmed (Jharkhand Mukti Morcha), GM Harish Balayagi (Telugu Desam Party), Shashank Mani Tripathi, Tejaswi Surya, Bhubaneswar K Lata (all from BJP), Mallikarjun Devda (Shiv Sena) and Former Indian Ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu. Since the mission included MPs from all parties, Tharoor said, 'One of the most striking takeaways is the power of national unity in projecting a strong foreign policy voice. The very composition of our delegations, featuring Members of Parliament (MPs) from diverse political parties, different States and varied faiths, was a potent message in itself." 'It underscored that when it comes to national security and confronting terrorism, India speaks with one voice," the Congress MP opined. 'We meticulously explained that India's actions were a legitimate exercise of self-defence, a necessary response to persistent cross-border terrorism. The success of this narrative was evident in the shift witnessed in several capitals," he added. Tharoor also mentioned the presence of a Pakistani delegation while he was in the United States. 'Even as a Pakistani delegation was simultaneously present, we found U.S. representatives, including those who met the Pakistani officials, echoing our concerns and urging decisive action against terror groups such as the Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed." 'This confirmed that our arguments, grounded in verifiable facts and consistent advocacy, were cutting through the noise and reinforcing the legitimacy of India's position," he said. (In a copycat act, Pakistan People's Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on May 17 stated that Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had tasked him to lead a delegation to present Pakistan's case on the recent escalations of tensions between the two nations.) 'One of my key messages was that India is focused on its growth and development and considers terrorism and war an avoidable distraction; all we want from Pakistan is to be left alone to serve our people. But if they hit us, we will hit back: we are determined to make them pay a price for each assault," Tharoor said of his delegation's outreach visits. Shashi Tharoor also mentioned that 'tradition' is one of the three 'T's" that he believes should drive India's future global strategy. 'Tech, trade, and tradition all go together in promoting the new India to the world," he said. 'Our diplomatic efforts must actively promote Indian technological breakthroughs and foster collaborative innovation with international partners. This is not just about economic growth; it is about showcasing India as a source of solutions and ingenuity, a nation that contributes meaningfully to global progress," the Congress MP said. Shashi Tharoor has often publicly backed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and India's 'Operation Sindoor' against terror infrastructures in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Last week, Tharoor had said he has differences of opinion with some in the Congress party leadership, but he is not going to talk about them in view of the bypoll in Nilambur constituency in Kerala. Speaking to reporters, Tharoor said that Congress, its values, and its workers were very dear to him. India has oil supplies to last several weeks, continues to receive energy from several routes: Minister
Global oil prices have jumped to their highest level since January after Israel struck Iran, in a dramatic escalation of tensions in the Middle East. (REUTERS) Check Offers India, the world's third-largest oil importer and fourth-biggest gas buyer, has enough energy supplies to meet requirements for several weeks and continues to receive supplies from several routes, Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said amid escalating tensions in the globe's biggest energy supply regions. In a post on X, the minister said the government has been "closely monitoring the evolving geopolitical situation in the Middle East since the past two weeks." "Under the leadership of PM @narendramodi Ji, we have diversified our supplies in the past few years and a large volume of our supplies do not come through the Strait of Hormuz now," he said. The Strait of Hormuz, which Iran is threatening to shut down following US strikes on its nuclear facilities, is an important transit for oil coming from the Middle East. About 2 million barrels per day (bpd) of crude oil out of India's total import of 5.5 million bpd transits through the narrow waterway. However, India has diversified sources -- from Russia to the US and Brazil -- which can readily fill any void. Russian oil is logistically detached from the Strait of Hormuz, flowing via the Suez Canal, Cape of Good Hope, or the Pacific Ocean. Even the US, West African, and Latin American flows -- though costlier -- are increasingly viable backup options. "Our Oil Marketing Companies have supplies for several weeks and continue to receive energy supplies from several routes. We will take all necessary steps to ensure stability of supplies of fuel to our citizens," Puri said. Global oil prices have jumped to their highest level since January after Israel struck Iran, in a dramatic escalation of tensions in the Middle East. Rates of the benchmark Brent crude were up more than 10 per cent to USD 77 a barrel. India imports more than 85 per cent of its crude oil needs and roughly half of its natural gas requirement. More than 40 per cent of the oil imports and half of gas imports come from the Middle East. Despite the spike on Friday, oil prices are still more than 10 per cent lower than where they were at the same point last year. They are also well below over USD 100 a barrel rate seen in early 2022 following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Russia is India's largest supplier of crude oil, which is refined into fuels like petrol and diesel in refineries. Qatar is India's biggest supplier of natural gas, which is used to make fertilisers, generate electricity, and turned into CNG to run automobiles and piped to household kitchens for cooking. UPA regime stood for scams, Modi-led NDA government for nation building: Minister Kishan
HYDERABAD: Union Coal & Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy on Sunday said that while the 'remote-controlled' UPA regime was known for corruption and scams, the BJP-led NDA government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is synonymous with nation building and development. 'During UPA rule, the main headlines in all newspapers used to be on corruption in the government. But in the last 11 years, the Modi-led NDA government has been free of corruption,' he said. The Union minister presided over the Viksit Sankalp Sabha in Secunderabad organised by Malkajgiri MP Eatala Rajender on completion of one year in office. Kishan, who is also the president of the state BJP unit, said: 'In the past, terrorist attacks and bomb blasts used to be the norm. But in the last 11 years, there has been no such terror attack. With surgical and air strikes as well as several other operations, the country, under Modi's leadership, has succeeded in curbing terrorist activities. We responded to the recent Pakistan-sponsored terrorist attack in Pahalgam with Operation Sindoor.' The Union minister also said that the Modi government was moving forward with a development agenda. 'The country is currently witnessing all-round development. Funds are being allocated for rural development, women empowerment, for improving road infrastructure and railway stations,' he said, adding that 32 out of 33 districts in Telangana have now been connected to national highways. He also said that the Union government was distributing PDS rice for 80 crore people in the country. Kishan, meanwhile, slammed the Revanth Reddy-led Congress government for 'failing' to fulfil promises made to the people. 'The Congress is also following in the footsteps of BRS and encouraging corruption,' he alleged. Stating that the BJP is the only party that will be able to protect the interests of Telangana people, he exuded confidence in the saffron party forming the government in the state by winning the next Assembly elections.
