Banggi solar project completed in 2015, says Sabah Umno leader

The Star27-05-2025

KOTA KINABALU: A Sabah Umno leader has refuted claims by Bersatu regarding stalled solar projects in Pulau Banggi, labelling them misleading and politically motivated.
Sabah Umno information chief Datuk Suhaimi Nasir said the accusation by Sabah Bersatu women's chief Rahimah Majid showed a lack of understanding about the project's implementation.
"This project was fully completed in 2015, long before Zahid (Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi) led the Rural and Regional Development Ministry,' Suhaimi said in a statement.
Concerns were raised last Saturday (May 24) over stalled hybrid solar projects in Pulau Banggi, which remained incomplete years after their launch.
Rahimah urged the Federal Government to explain the delay, stating that the failure has dashed residents' hopes of reliable electricity.
Accessible by a ferry ride of over one hour from Kudat, the island hosts many coastal villages facing challenges accessing electricity and clean water.
Suhaimi, also the Libaran MP, said the Rural Electricity Supply (BELB) Hybrid Solar Project was handed over to Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) for operation and maintenance.
He added that any technical issues since then fall under SESB's jurisdiction and said that the the villages mentioned by Rahimah—Kampung Selamat, Pulau Tigabu and Pulau Balambangan — are part of a separate initiative.
This project, Hybrid Solar System Project for Remote Islands in Sabah, is 85% complete, with a 15% delay from the original timeline.
"The ministry's technical division is terminating the contractor for failing to meet deadlines and standards," he said, noting a site visit is scheduled for June 16.
"This shows the government is taking firm and transparent action on the delay."
He said Rahimah's claim that the project was launched "in grand fashion" but is now abandoned was a baseless attempt to twist public perception.
"What's ironic is this was a legacy project from their own time in government. Now they point fingers at others," he said.
Suhaimi said Bersatu Sabah should stop acting like "a frustrated commentator barking from the sidelines" and focus on real solutions.
"Sabahans are wise enough to judge who walks the talk and who only makes promises when in power, then disappears when it's time to deliver," he added.

Give GRS one more term to prove its worth - Khairul

Khairul delivering his speech while officiating the Gagasan Rakyat Moyog Division AGM. KOTA KINABALU (June 22): Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) direct member Datuk Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan has called on the people of Sabah to give the coalition another term to prove its capability and deliver on its promises. Speaking after officiating the Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) Moyog Division annual general meeting at ITCC Shopping Mall in Penampang on Sunday, Khairul said he firmly believes GRS remains the best option for the state. He praised GRS chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor for his leadership, describing him as approachable, open to ideas and criticism, and committed to progressive initiatives for Sabah. 'And at this juncture, anyone wanting to lead Sabah will face big challenges. That is why I think this is the best time for Sabahans to give a solid mandate to GRS,' said Khairul, who is also the Batu Sapi Member of Parliament. 'Try us out for one more term. If we don't perform, kick us out,' he added. Khairul acknowledged that political parties must remain grounded in public support, stressing that if the people no longer believe in GRS, then the coalition must reconsider its role and direction. 'It is normal for political parties to exist, but we must be realistic. If our cause is no longer accepted by the rakyat, we have to re-evaluate.' Highlighting Sabah's unique political landscape, he noted that the state has the highest number of political parties ever to form a government in Malaysia's history, illustrating the people's openness to political change. 'That's why GRS and Gagasan Rakyat must truly understand the needs of Sabahans. We cannot afford to be out of touch,' he said. When asked about possible electoral pacts with Pakatan Harapan (PH) or Barisan Nasional (BN), Khairul urged Sabah leaders to end internal rivalries and prioritise the state's future. 'Sabahan leaders have been fighting each other for decades. Why can't we sit down, be objective, and look at what's best for the future of Sabah and the next generation?' he questioned. 'If some still believe that becoming Chief Minister is the only priority, then we can't help them. God bless them.'

How is PAS's credibility faring vs UMNO's struggling defense of Malay values?

ZAID Ibrahim's recent endorsement of PAS' potential to uplift Malaysia has bolstered the party's image as a credible Islamic force. The former minister praised PAS's 'moral clarity', stating, 'History has shown us that clerical leadership can steer nations through immense adversity.' Just look at Iran. Guided by its Council of Guardians, religious scholars with deep ideological conviction, Iran not only survived but asserted its independence despite decades of war and crippling sanctions from global superpowers,' he said last week in a Facebook post. This comparison to Iran's resilient leadership underscores PAS's ideological strength, which Zaid believes can elevate Malaysia if paired with good governance and inclusivity. PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan welcomed this, emphasizing the party's commitment to morality and ethics, citing Western thinkers like Plato and Kant, and the UK's Seven Nolan Principles. He asserted, 'This also justifies PAS' firm stance on the matter, which Zaid has acknowledged, particularly in terms of the party's leadership being free from corruption and corrupt practices.' With 43 Dewan Rakyat seats and control over four states, PAS's growing influence contrasts sharply with UMNO's struggles. Since losing power in 2018, UMNO has faced challenges in defending Malay race and religion. UMNO secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki claimed, 'UMNO was born from the womb of a struggle rooted in safeguarding the sanctity of Islam, strengthening the dignity of the Malay race, and preserving the sovereignty of the homeland.' Yet, he admitted the 22-month period post-2018 saw Islam 'belittled' and Malay agendas, like MARA's focus, undermined by policies favouring equality over Malay privileges. UMNO's narrative of betrayal, exemplified by Asyraf's reference to ICERD and Statut Rom, paints rivals as opportunists who are 'selling our religion.' However, UMNO's own credibility has been tarnished by corruption scandals pre-2018, weakening its moral authority compared to PAS's cleaner image. While UMNO touts victories like the 2019 Cameron Highlands by-election, its broader appeal remains hampered by internal divisions and public distrust. PAS's emphasis on ethical governance aligns with public demand for integrity, positioning it as a formidable alternative. UMNO, despite its historical dominance, struggles to reclaim its role as the champion of Malay-Muslim interests, as its past governance failures overshadow its rhetoric. —June 22, 2025 Main image: Malay Mail

UMNO to review motion on Hishammuddin's suspension revocation

BATU PAHAT: UMNO will consider a motion to revoke the suspension of former UMNO vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein's membership. UMNO vice-president Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said it was the party leadership's tradition and practice to examine any motion submitted by UMNO divisions during their respective delegates' meetings. 'This is a motion brought by one of the 191 UMNO divisions nationwide. 'Like other divisions, the motion will be submitted to the UMNO headquarters to be studied and considered before any decision is made,' he told reporters after officiating the Batu Pahat UMNO Division Delegates' Meeting at Dewan Jubli Intan Sultan Ibrahim here today. Khaled, who is also Defence Minister, said UMNO had yet to receive an appeal from the former senior national leader, but stressed that the motion would still be reviewed and considered. 'For now, there is only a motion, and we will consider it. Whether the individual concerned (Hishammuddin) has submitted an appeal or not, I don't wish to comment further,' he said. Yesterday, the Sembrong UMNO Division passed a motion for the immediate and unconditional revocation of Hishammuddin's suspension. Sembrong UMNO Division chief Datuk Abdul Ghani Abdul Rashid said this was the second year in a row the motion had been proposed by the division, reflecting the majority of delegates' wishes to see Hishammuddin return to active party involvement. For the record, Hishammuddin was suspended from UMNO membership for six years, effective January 27, 2023. Meanwhile, UMNO secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the party was open to receiving and discussing the motion at the next UMNO Supreme Council meeting. 'UMNO is an open party, and we've received many appeals from party leaders that have been accepted by UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. In this matter, I will receive and consider any motions submitted,' he told reporters after officiating the Rompin UMNO Delegates' Meeting in Muadzam Shah, Pahang today. Asked about several MCA divisions that had submitted motions calling for the dissolution of Barisan Nasional (BN) during the party's annual general meeting, Asyraf urged component parties to remain patient and to make decisions that were more realistic and practical. 'All the component parties have incumbent seats, and we must ensure that we retain the 30 seats we already hold... If we aim to win more, we must negotiate with the top leadership to discuss this. UMNO is very open to discussions on the matter,' he added. Yesterday, the media reported that MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said the party's top leadership would take into account grassroots feedback before deciding on the party's future direction. Commenting on the same issue in KUALA KANGSAR, UMNO vice-president Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani said the matter must be brought to the UMNO Supreme Council (MKT) meeting for discussion with other council members before any decision is made. 'Let the proposal go to the Supreme Council meeting, I will give my comment then,' he said when met at the Dialog@KPK programme with the Minister of Plantation and Commodities at the Indian Association Hall here today.
