Lawmakers call for tougher measures against human trafficking

LAHORE:
In the wake of the tragic deaths of 65 Pakistanis in Libya due to human smuggling, members of the Punjab Assembly have called for an intensified crackdown on traffickers and enhanced district-level monitoring to prevent such incidents.
Speaking at a joint press conference on Tuesday, members of the Special Committee on Anti-Human Trafficking and Human Smuggling, including Uzma Kardar, Adnan Afzal Chattha, Aoun Hameed, Rifat Mahmood Zaidi, Rushda Lodhi and Syed Kausar Abbas, stressed the urgency of dismantling illegal migration networks.
MPA Uzma Kardar, who heads the special parliamentary committee, reaffirmed the government's commitment to eliminating human smuggling.
"Traffickers lure people with false promises of a better future abroad. Many families sell their assets and pay between Rs4 to Rs5 million to these mafias, hoping to reach destinations like Malaysia, Cambodia, or Europe. Instead, they end up stranded, imprisoned, or worse—losing their lives," she said.Kardar emphasized that the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), police, Deputy Commissioners (DCs), and District Police Officers (DPOs) were actively working to dismantle these criminal networks. She also announced the establishment of victim support units to assist affected families.
Syed Kausar Abbas, executive director of the Sustainable Social Development Organization (SSDO), revealed that four major human smuggling cases had been reported in recent weeks. He urged the government to set up Anti-Human Smuggling and Trafficking Cells in every district and ensure their reports were directly shared with the parliamentary committee.
"We need strict surveillance at the district level to dismantle these smuggling networks before they claim more lives," he said.
MPA Adnan Afzal Chattha described irregular migration as a "tragic industry" that required urgent intervention, particularly in Gujranwala, Gujrat, and surrounding districts—areas known as hotspots for human smuggling.
"The Punjab government has launched technical training programs to offer legal migration opportunities.

'E-vehicle policy to ensure greener Pakistan'

The government has stepped up policy-level efforts to promote electric vehicles in the country, as it offers a wide array of benefits across environmental, economic, public health and industrial development sectors. This was stated by Muhammad Saleem Shaikh, spokesperson for the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination on Sunday in the context of the federal government's New Electric Vehicle Policy (NEVP) launched on Friday. The policy aims to ensure a just and inclusive transition to cleaner mobility, reduce dependency on fossil fuels, stimulate local innovation and create new green jobs, he said. "The Government of Pakistan is stepping up efforts to promote the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) as a key part of the country's clean energy and climate resilience agenda. With the transport sector being a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and urban air pollution, the shift towards EVs marks a significant move towards a sustainable, healthier, and economically viable," the official remarked. He further said that the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination (MoCC&EC)) has already reaffirmed its commitment at various forums to promoting EVs in the country as a strategic priority in the country's transition toward a low-carbon, climate-resilient future as part of global efforts to cut heat-trapping and climate-altering vehicular carbon emissions and achieve environmental and urban sustainability. Saleem Shaikh said, "Recognising the transport sector as among the key contributors to air pollution and climate change-causing greenhouse gas emissions, the ministry would now actively support every possible effort for the implementation of the New Electric Vehicle Policy 2025-2030 to drive the country toward a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable mobility system. Director General of the ministry, Mohammad Asif Sahibzada, pointed out that the Ministry of Industries and Production, MoCC&EC and other key industrial and non-industrial stakeholders were working in close collaboration to implement the new policy. He further said that the policy would go a long way in bringing more and more e-vehicles onto the country's roads as it envisions 30 per cent of all new vehicles sold by 2030 to be electric - including two-wheelers, three-wheelers, buses, and cars. "This transition is not only vital for addressing adverse impacts of transport sector-related carbon emissions that contribute to climate change but also crucial for ensuring a clean, efficient and inclusive transport future for all Pakistanis," said Asif Sahibzada. Talking about the environmental and public health benefits, Sahibzada highlighted that EVs emit zero tailpipe pollutants, significantly reducing urban smog and climate-warming emissions. This shift supports the country's commitments under the Paris Agreement and its national climate change targets, he added. "Cleaner air means fewer respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses. With fewer emissions on the road, citizens — especially children and the elderly — will benefit from improved health outcomes and reduced healthcare costs," he remarked. He further said that electric vehicles undoubtedly offer long-term savings due to lower fuel and maintenance costs. They reduce Pakistan's dependency on imported fossil fuels, helping stabilise the economy and protect against global energy price shocks, he added. The ministry's Director for Urban Affairs and Urban Air Pollution Experts, Muhammad Azeem Khoso said that cleaner air means fewer respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses.

PTI's propaganda cell echoes Indian media's narrative: Azma

LAHORE: Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari has said that the narrative propagated by Indian media is being replicated and amplified by a specific propaganda cell affiliated with PTI, which is an extremely dangerous trend against national interest. Speaking to the media at the Punjab Assembly, she said that spreading any news on social media without verification falls under the category of propaganda. 'Such behaviour is not only misleading but also harmful to national security,' she emphasised. Azma Bokhari further remarked that certain individuals spread sensational content on social media but neither apologise nor properly retract their posts, by which time the misinformation has already reached innocent and unsuspecting citizens. She stressed the need for firm legal and administrative action against such elements to ensure that no one in the future can engage in such anti-national campaigns with impunity. She added that the dissemination of false and fabricated information on social media is an attempt to create mistrust between state institutions and the public—something that will not be tolerated under any circumstances. PPP leader accuses Punjab govt of neglecting southern Punjab in budget

LAHORE: Parliamentary Leader of Pakistan People's Party in Central Punjab Syed Ali Haider Gillani on Friday strongly protested against the recent budget, accusing the government of discriminatory treatment towards South Punjab. He demanded that female members of the assembly should also be given due representation in budget allocations. Expressing concern over the conditions in Multan during speaking in Punjab assembly session, Gilani stated that despite being a major city of South Punjab with a population exceeding 5 million, its residents are forced to drink contaminated water due to the lack of clean water supply. Gillani also criticized the allocation of only Rs. 123 billion for the agriculture and livestock sectors, calling it an injustice to farmers. He demanded the formation of a committee to investigate the alleged unfair distribution of funds in the budget for South Punjab. He expressed confidence that South Punjab would soon become a separate province. Highlighting disparities, Gillani pointed out that Multan's water authority (WASA) received not a single rupee this year, forcing residents to consume toxic water, while Lahore WASA was allocated 147 billion rupees. Punjab Assembly Speaker Muhammad Ahmad Khan expressed regret over the opposition's protest during the session, stating that Operation Leader and other members damaged the House's microphone, misled the media, and baselessly blamed the Speaker. He warned that strict action would be taken against those responsible for the damage, and a committee would be formed to investigate the incident. The Speaker also cautioned that legal action would be taken against any member found disrespecting the Finance Minister. He emphasised that the assembly is the members' home and urged unity among lawmakers. The Punjab Assembly session began one hour and 56 minutes late under the chairmanship of Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmed Khan. Shortly after the session started, the issue of a broken microphone arose. The Speaker expressed strong displeasure with Opposition Leader Malik Ahmed Khan Bhachar, stating, 'I am deeply disappointed that you accused us of breaking the microphone. I am a principled man and will never tolerate such allegations. An inquiry will be conducted, and action will be taken against those found responsible. If the microphone was damaged due to the ruckus and hooliganism by your members, they will be held accountable. From now on, I will ensure the Assembly proceedings are strictly rule-based. You must decide how you wish to proceed.' The Speaker also addressed other incidents, saying, 'I have formed an inquiry committee regarding the allegations against Bilal Yamin.
