Ireland's universities among most improved in the world as Trinity retains top place in country's rankings

Trinity College Dublin (TCD) retained its place as Ireland's top institution in the QS World University Rankings for 2026, improving its overall ranking from 87th last year to 75th.
University College Dublin (UCD) was ranked 118th, up from 126th a year ago, followed by University College Cork (UCC), up to 246th from 273rd, and the University of Galway, which fell to 284th from 273rd.
The University of Limerick, Dublin City University (DCU), the University of Maynooth and the Technological University of Dublin (TUD) made up the rest of the eight Irish universities included in the rankings.
Seven of the eight improved on their ranking from a year ago, making Ireland the most-improved country in Europe and the second-most improved in the world, trailing Azerbaijan.
This edition of the QS rankings also marks the first time every ranked Irish university has been included in the world's top 800.
Further and Higher Education Minister James Lawless said third-level institutions 'play a vital role in delivering education and research' in Ireland.
'This work has been and continues to be pivotal to the success of our country as a knowledge-driven economy,' he said.
Their achievements reflect the strength of our higher education system
'I congratulate the institutions that have improved their standing in this year's QS university rankings.
'Their achievements reflect the strength of our higher education system and reinforce Ireland's global reputation for academic excellence and cutting-edge research.
'This progress also reflects the significant investment this Government has made in higher education in recent years, supporting our ambition to build a world-class, innovative and inclusive system that delivers for all.'
TCD ranked in the top 100 globally in three indicators: academic reputation, international faculty and graduate outcomes.
UCD landed in the top 100 for graduate outcomes and in the top 50 for sustainability, where it was ranked 49th.
After rising into the global top 250, UCC also improved in academic reputation, employer reputation and citations per faculty.
The University of Oxford was in fourth place, down from third
At the top of the rankings, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) retained the number one spot it has held since 2012.
In second place was Imperial College London, the same spot it earned last year.
The University of Oxford was in fourth place, down from third, and Harvard University was in fifth, down from fourth.
QS senior vice-president Ben Sowter said: 'Ireland's outstanding results in the 2026 QS World University Rankings are testament to the dedication of academics, administrators and students across the eight universities from the country included in the ranking.
'The Government has been clear in its ambitions to make Ireland a first-choice destination for international learners in its Global Citizens 2030 Talent and Innovation Strategy and, with every university improving in the international student indicator, the country's campuses are increasingly open and diverse.'

Speaking yesterday after the winner made contact, spokesperson for the National Lottery Emma Monaghan said; "We are absolutely thrilled to have heard from our EuroMillions winner. "At this point, our priority is to give them the necessary time and space to make arrangements and let this life-changing news sink in.' The record-breaking win surpasses the €175m record for the largest cheque ever presented to an Irish player, in February 2019. The winning numbers this week were: 13, 22, 23, 44 ,49 and the Lucky Stars were 3 and 5. The National Lottery has urged the winner 'to stay calm, get independent legal and financial advice and contact us as soon as they can'. Dolores McNamara from Limerick was Ireland's first EuroMillions winner, scooping over €115m in July 2005. The jackpot is capped once it reaches €250m. In total, over 92,200 players in Ireland won prizes in the EuroMillions and Plus games on Tuesday night.

Cork Airport named best in Europe for the third time

The airport won the 'under 5 million passengers' category, and it marked the third time that Ireland's fastest growing airport won the accolade. It was previously awarded the honour in 2017 and 2019. The award celebrates and acknowledges Cork Airport's continued excellence in passenger experience, operational efficiency, route development, sustainability and innovation. Olivier Jankovec, ACI europe director general, said the airport thoroughly deserved the recognition. 'The airport team has worked tirelessly to enhance operational efficiency, offer exceptional passenger experience, and deliver on ambitious environmental and sustainability goals,' he said. Commenting, Taoiseach Micheál Martin said it is clear the airport is going from 'strength to strength.' 'It is clear that Cork Airport is going from strength-to-strength every year and this award is a reflection of the hard work and dedication of Niall MacCarthy and all his team there,' Mr Martin said. 'I know there are plans to further develop the airport and I look forward to seeing Cork Airport continue to flourish as Ireland's fastest growing airport.' In 2024, Cork Airport welcomed 3.2 million passengers representing 10% growth compared to 2023 figures. This year, the airport is expected to see 3.4 million passengers. 'Lucky streak' - Cork city shop celebrates EuroMillions jackpot sale

The owner of the shop that sold the winning EuroMillions ticket in Cork is celebrating a "lucky streak", having previously sold a €100,000 ticket on New Year's Eve. The winning €250 million ticket was sold at Clifford's Centra on Shandon Street in Cork city. It marks the biggest ever jackpot win in Ireland and the 18th Irish winner of the EuroMillions jackpot. Shop owner Ted Clifford said the National Lottery phoned him yesterday to tell him the news, which he described as "fantastic". The shop will receive €25,000 in prize money, which he said will go towards "a big celebration". It is "definitely going to be the hottest day of the year on Shandon Street", he said. Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Mr Clifford said the shop is having a "lucky streak". "This all kicked off on New Year's Eve when we sold a €100,000 ticket to a local person and I think this is when our luck started," he said. Mr Clifford, who is a third generation owner of the store, said he does not know who bought the winning ticket but he sends them his "warmest congratulations". The holder of the winning ticket in Tuesday night's €250m EuroMillions lottery has already made contact with the National Lottery's prize claims team, the company confirmed. The winning numbers are 13, 22, 23, 44, 49 - Lucky Stars 3 and 5.
