A mining company looking to extract one of the world's largest deposits of the critical mineral tungsten has said it has taken another step to getting back into production.Tungsten West said its operation at Hemerdon, near Plymouth, Devon, had been designated a strategic project under the EU's critical mineral strategy and could be up and running by the end of 2026."We're fully permitted and shovel ready," said Jeff Court, Tungsten West chief executive.Bosses said Hemerdon contained the second-largest tungsten deposit in the world and could meet 20% of global demand.
The disused Hemerdon Mine was taken over by Tungsten West in 2019 after it was previously run by Australian mining company Wolf Minerals Ltd, which filed for administration in 2018.Tungsten West commenced interim operations in 2023.The EU recognition of the project is a major step forward, but the company said it would still need to raise £69m ($93m) of private investment to reach production stage.Tungsten is considered the perfect metal for bullets and missiles for its high melting point and is also used in electronics and tools. While lithium and tin projects in Cornwall have attracted tens of millions of pounds of UK government support, Tungsten West had received none, said bosses.Mr Court said: "I think it's great that we have interest from the US and the EU, but it's a UK project."Jobs, money going into the economy, taxes, revenue, regional development is all going to see the benefit here."
Call for 'equal share'
Mr Court said "we would like to see the UK leading" in terms of public funding."It's good in a sense that resource development in the South West is gaining support from the government and funds are flowing into the UK, especially for the metal resource sector," he said. "That's a positive for everyone. We'd just like to see equal share of support."A spokesperson for the Department for Business and Trade said: "Our upcoming Critical Minerals Strategy will set out how we plan to improve production and help projects in the UK access financial support."We welcomed the EU's announcement of Tungsten West as a strategic project, and our strategy will set out our approach to working with international partners and developing global supply chains."

Taxpayers have forked out an extra £8.6bn in just two months as Rachel Reeves' Budget starts to bite, new figures show. Data from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) shows that tax receipts hit £142.8bn for April and May, a rise of more than 6pc compared to the same period last year. Almost £3 in every additional £4 raised came from income tax and National Insurance, alongside increased revenue from capital gains and inheritance tax. Tax expert Rachel Griffin called the increase 'another chapter in the Government's stealth tax strategy', while retirement specialist Stephen Lowe said Labour's 'tax train showed absolutely no signs of running out of steam'. In her maiden Budget in October, the Chancellor raised employers' National Insurance contributions from 13.8pc to 15pc and reduced the salary at which they become due from £9,100 to £5,000. She also retained the Conservatives' plans to freeze income tax thresholds. The moves came despite Labour's manifesto promise not to raise taxes on working people. As a result of the changes, HMRC received an extra £6.1bn in revenue for the two measures over April and May compared to last year, with £3.6bn in additional income tax and another £2.5bn in National Insurance contributions. Ms Griffin, of Quilter, said: 'HMRC's latest figures for May 2025 mark another chapter in the Government's stealth-tax strategy. Despite no new headline tax rises, receipts continue to climb thanks to frozen thresholds and slashed allowances. 'With income tax thresholds still frozen, many workers are paying a larger share of their earnings in tax simply due to modest pay rises, even when those increases fail to match inflation. 'This month's figures also capture the first full month's impact of the April changes to employer National Insurance contributions. While the policy may help shore up the public finances, it could also influence hiring decisions and wage growth in the months ahead.' There was also a £97m increase in inheritance tax receipts. The amount is expected to increase quickly next year after the Chancellor's decision to halve agricultural and business property relief after the first £1m of assets. From April 2027, pensions will also be considered for inheritance tax. Mr Lowe, of Just Group, said: 'The Treasury's inheritance tax revenues continue to surge with this tax train showing absolutely no signs of running out of steam through the first couple of months in this financial year. 'The reforms announced at the autumn Budget, which included further extending the threshold freeze and tightening the exemptions for pension wealth, will likely tip more estates into paying the tax and further boost the Chancellor's coffers.' There was also an increase of £106m in capital gains receipts, which have continued to rise following changes implemented in October last year. The Chancellor increased the lower rate from 10pc to 18pc and the higher rate from 20pc to 24pc for shares and other non-property assets. Richard Bate, of law firm Weightmans, said: 'With inheritance tax thresholds frozen and key reliefs due to be curtailed from 2026, families and business owners are acting early – restructuring their estates while current capital gains tax rates and allowances remain in place. 'But in doing so, many are facing an unwelcome double tax hit – capital gains tax now, followed by potential inheritance tax later if planning isn't carefully managed.'

Meghan Markle was praised for her 'clarity, conviction and honestly genuine wisdom' today by entrepreneur Emma Grede after they sat down for a 90-minute podcast. Grede hailed the Duchess of Sussex for 'building something with purpose, precision and with a lot of heart' as she lauded her in a follow-up video on Instagram last night. The British businesswoman, a founding partner of Kim Kardashian 's shapewear brand Skims, spoke to Meghan for her Aspire podcast which came out on Tuesday. Their chat saw Meghan say she would 'ask people to tell the truth' if she was able to rewrite her public narrative from scratch and refer to a 'lie' told eight years ago. The Duchess also used the podcast to deny that her personal Instagram account, where she shares behind the scenes footage of family life, is a tool to promote her business – adding that she uses it for 'authentic' sharing such as her twerking video. The interview was released three days before Meghan's As Ever brand is due to restock and launch new products later today at 8am Pacific Time (4pm UK time). Reflecting on the podcast, Grede said: 'When I sat down with Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, I expected a great conversation, but what I didn't expect was how much clarity, conviction and honestly genuine wisdom that she brought to the table. Grede, who co-founded denim company Good American, added: 'Meghan doesn't just talk about building a brand - she's building something with purpose, precision and with a lot of heart. And there were a few moments that really stayed with me.' She cited the first one as being 'trust your timeline', praising Meghan for saying 'someone else's urgency is not my urgency'. Grede said 'She's not rushing to meet outside expectations. She's building with care on her own terms, and that discipline shows in every move that she makes.' The second one was labelled 'own the vision, share the work', with Grede telling how Meghan talks about 'creating something where you feel her fingerprints all over it'. Grede added: 'She believes in collaboration but not at the expense of intention. You can delegate, but you still have to show up.' The third point was to 'protect what matters the most'. Grede said Meghan 'spoke about being present for her kids and having to ask herself if she could do it well enough or if she should just do a few things exceptionally well'. She continued: 'And that idea really resonates with me, because it's not about balance, it never is, it's about priorities.' Having to 'make your message unmistakable' was cited as the fourth point. Eight years ago, in 2017, former actress Meghan was dating and became engaged to the now-Duke of Sussex, and began preparing for life as a member of the royal family. The year also included Meghan's first meeting with the now-Princess of Wales and the beginnings of the Prince of Wales's fall out with Harry after William urged his brother not to rush into the relationship. Grede asked Meghan: 'I want to say this to you in the best way, because I wonder if you could rewrite your public narrative from scratch, is there anything that you would do differently?' Meghan replied calmly: 'Yes, I would ask people to tell the truth.' The Duchess gave no specifics about to whom who she was referring, but later referred to a 'lie' told eight years ago - in another apparent dig about her life in the public eye as a member of the Royal Family since she began a relationship with Harry. In the YouTube footage of the podcast, which was peppered with numerous ad breaks fronted by Grede, Meghan acknowleded her life now was 'very different' from when she was an actress. She also addressed her recent twerking video, which showed her dancing to the Baby Mama song in a bid to bring on labour with Princess Lilibet, describing it as a reminder of a 'real authentic fun life.' The Duchess said it felt liberating to back on social media where she can share things on her own terms. 'That wasn't yesterday. That was four years ago so it's also a really great reminder that with all the noise or whatever people do, there's still whole life, a real, authentic, fun life that's happening behind the scenes,' Meghan said. 'I'm just grateful that now, being back on social as well, I have a place where I can share it on my own terms.' She added: 'It feels liberating.' Grede asked Meghan: 'Would you ever do something just for the money?' Meghan replied: 'I have turned down a lot of opportunities that do not feel value-aligned. 'It's very easy to say no, no matter the price, if you aren't gonna be able to sleep well at night.' The Duchess was also asked whether she any sense of imposter syndrome, but she said she had no fear of failure. 'I don't feel imposter syndrome. I feel like I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be right now,' Meghan said. She added: 'I don't see the possibility of failure, not when you can learn from everything you've done.' Meghan also said she wanted to speak to Grede about diversifying her own brand into fashion at some stage. The Duchess said: 'I think there'll certainly be a time for fashion. You and I can talk about that later.' She also claimed in the podcast that she struggled to get acting roles early in her career because she is mixed race. Meghan told how she would get plenty of auditions but was regularly rejected by directors - which was a 'lot to chip away at your self-esteem'. The former actress, who eventually rose to fame in US legal drama Suits from 2011, said she was often put forward for 'girl next door' roles because she was 'half white'. But she said these characters were 'typically blond-haired, blue-eyed and a certain look' – and if they 'had any sort of ethnicity, there was always a bit of an edge'.

A clear and present danger In recent years, several prominent UK businesses have faced significant technology and cybersecurity challenges and the consequences of data protection breaches. For example, in October 2023, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) fined Equifax over £11 million for failing to manage and monitor the security of UK consumer data it had outsourced to its parent company based in the US. The breach allowed hackers to access the personal data of millions of people and exposed UK consumers to the risk of financial crime. As reported by Finextra on 15 May, NatWest's head of cyber security has revealed that the Bank faces 100 million cyber-attacks every month. That incident brought into sharp focus the risks and vulnerabilities which can arise where a customer outsources the handling of sensitive data, and the serious regulatory consequences faced by UK firms if they fail to ensure the safeguarding of sensitive information. Rules are rules Aside from principles of good business sense, obligations in relation to security and data protection are imposed on customers looking to outsource IT services to third parties via a range of regulatory and quasi-regulatory/industry measures. Regulatory measures in the UK include the requirements in the UK GDPR relating to security and data processor contracts, as well as more financial services-specific rules such as the FCA Operational Resilience regime, the FCA and PRA rules on material outsourcing and use of cloud, and the incoming FCA rules on use of Critical Third Party suppliers. Businesses operating in the EU (and by extension their relevant suppliers) must now also comply with the requirements of the EU Digital Operational Resilience Act (DORA) and its requirements in relation to critical IT services providers. Regulatory measures carry the added risk of sanctions and penalties from the relevant enforcement agencies if they are breached. Non-regulatory, but nonetheless important, requirements which impact many financial services business include the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCIDSS) which impose requirements on the security of card data, and the information security requirements of ISO27001. Get it in writing The typical provisions which a customer can try to include into contracts to meet its regulatory obligations, and otherwise to guard against (or at least provide some form of recourse in the event of) cyber and data infringements, can be grouped into two main types: (1) contract standards; and (2) rights and remedies. Contract standards Set out the general standards to which a supplier must conduct its business and provide their service(s) - for example in compliance with all laws and regulations, with professional skill and care and in accordance with good industry practice. standards to which a supplier must conduct its business and provide their service(s) - for example in compliance with all laws and regulations, with professional skill and care and in accordance with good industry practice. Set out any specific requirements which the supplier must meet which are intended to address particular cyber and data concerns, for example: Detailed security provisions, including compliance with the customer's own information and systems security policies Warranties of compliance with any information provided by the supplier pre-contract as part of the customer's due diligence process. Early warning requirements related to suspected cyber incidents or data breaches. Specific clauses designed to meet the requirements of the UK GDPR including: to exercise sufficient technical and organisational measures to protect data against unauthorised access, to notify data breaches in good time, and controls on the export of data outside of the UK/EEA. Compliance with specific industry standards including PCIDSS and ISO27001 Regular conduct of security testing and the provision of results to the customer (this can be a source of debate - a customer may want the right to conduct its own testing (including penetration tests) but suppliers can be reluctant to give this, especially over systems used for multiple customers, and so a right to see the results of the supplier's own internal or third party testing may be the best which can be achieved). An obligation to rectify any detected weaknesses after testing. Restrictions against use of sub-contractors and/or AI systems without the customer's consent. Requirement to use at least 'industry – standard' cybersecurity measures such as firewalls, malware blockers etc. requirements which the supplier must meet which are intended to address particular cyber and data concerns, for example: Rights and remedies Making sure that the supplier's liability for losses which might be suffered due to a cyber or data breach are not excluded out of hand, or caught by a general exclusion of 'indirect or consequential' liability. Potentially no or separate/higher liability caps for issues such as breach of confidentiality, security, or data protection requirements. It is now not uncommon to have 'supercaps' for data liability (although suppliers may not accept uncapped liability given the potentially large data protection regulatory fines). Indemnities for issues such as security or data breach Audit rights for the customer (and also its regulators) - which would extend to the supplier's sub-contractors. Definite termination rights in the event of a cyber or data related breach A right to remove supplier personnel or sub-contractors or the service if there are any concerns. Prevention is always better than the cure, and the only sure-fire way to avoid cyber and data issues is to make sure that, practically, the appropriate measures and behaviours are put in place by suppliers. However, a well-drafted contract will make it clear what a supplier is required to do, meet any regulatory requirements for terms which must be included, provide the customer with various rights and remedies (ideally to try and catch and avoid problems before they escalate), and otherwise provide the customer with a potential claim for damages for breach of contract, or indemnity rights should the supplier fail to comply with the relevant terms and the customer suffers loss or liability as a result.
