Time of India20-05-2025

Actress Ruchi Gujjar chose tradition and symbolism at the 78th Cannes Film Festival, where she wore a custom-made necklace featuring the face of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Along with the necklace, she embraced Indian culture with a golden Rajasthani lehenga and a Bandhani dupatta, combining national pride with regional heritage. Her appearance drew attention not only for fashion but for its message on India's presence on the global stage.
Traditional look reflects Rajasthani heritage
Ruchi Gujjar walked the Cannes red carpet in a gold lehenga designed by Roopa Sharmaa. The outfit was heavily embellished with traditional mirror work, Gota Patti, and detailed embroidery from Jaipur's artisanal traditions. The blouse, matching the lehenga, had a deep neckline with zardozi work, paired with a handcrafted Bandhani dupatta by Ram of Zaribari. "Wearing this dupatta felt like I was draping the soul of Rajasthan," said Ruchi in a statement. The dupatta included zardozi and Gota Patti details, representing the textile culture of the state.
The Modi necklace and its message
The standout accessory in Ruchi's Cannes appearance was a necklace designed with the face of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The piece was crafted with traditional Rajasthani motifs, representing Modi's signature look. Speaking about the necklace, Ruchi said, "The necklace is more than jewellery—it's a symbol of strength, vision, and India's rise on the world stage. By wearing it at Cannes, I wanted to honour our Prime Minister, whose leadership has taken India to new heights." She completed her look with matching jewellery, including earrings, maang tikka, bangles, and red alta on her hands.
Background and career journey
Ruchi Gujjar hails from Mehara Gujarwas Khetri village in Rajasthan and graduated from Maharani College in Jaipur. Coming from an army family, she later moved to Mumbai to pursue a career in acting. She is known for appearing in music videos such as Jab Tu Meri Na Rahi, Heli Mein Chor, and Ek Ladki alongside Aman Verma. Ruchi has previously spoken about the challenges she faced entering the entertainment industry, especially coming from a community where women are not traditionally encouraged to join Bollywood. 'It was difficult to change how people think about women working in Bollywood. I want to be an inspiration in our community,' she said. While her mother was initially hesitant about her career path, she is now proud of her achievements. Her father has been a constant supporter. Ruchi also expressed interest in acting in South Indian films, stating that she appreciates the support and admiration audiences have for that industry.

Anurag Kashyap's ‘Kennedy' impresses at NYIFF, fuels call for Indian theatrical release

Anurag Kashyap's Kennedy continues its strong run on the festival circuit, drawing a standing ovation and sold-out screenings at the 2025 New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF). The neo-noir thriller, headlined by Rahul Bhat, has been steadily building momentum since its Cannes premiere, where it received a nine-minute ovation. At NYIFF, the film's first screening sold out in just 40 seconds, prompting organisers to add another show. Bhat, who plays the titular role of a sleepless ex-cop operating within a corrupt system, has been nominated for Best Actor. 'I'm truly honoured to be nominated for Best Actor at NYIFF,' he said. 'The love Kennedy has received across the world is incredibly humbling.' Kashyap is also in the running for Best Director. The film, produced by Ranjan Singh and Kabir Ahuja under Good Bad Films and Zee Studios, features Sunny Leone in a supporting role alongside Mohit Takalkar, Abhilash Thapliyal, Megha Burman, Karishma Modi, and Jeniffer Piccinato. Following the NYIFF screening, Kashyap and Bhat participated in a Q&A session where audience members praised the film's storytelling, music, and performances. One viewer called it 'a masterpiece in Hindi cinema' and questioned why it hasn't seen a theatrical release in India. Despite its international acclaim, Kennedy remains unreleased in Indian cinemas, which has been a point of frustration for many fans. With growing demand on social media and at festival screenings, the pressure is mounting for a domestic release.

Radhika Apte on the influence of international recognition on Indian audience: Regular public doesn't care

Radhika Apte-starrer Sister Midnight released in India last month after making waves internationally, which includes a nod at BAFTA awards and a screening at Cannes Film Festival. The film had a limited release in India and managed to garner good reviews, but the box office collections weren't as impressive. Radhika Apte(Photo: Instagram) Ask her if international acclaim impacts a film's performance in India and Radhika Apte shrugs it off saying, 'The regular public, I don't know how much of them care about what Cannes or BAFTA is. And rightly so. They don't need to care about anything they don't want to care about. I don't think they would perceive a film in a certain way due to it.' However, she adds that the industry does get influenced by it: 'The film fraternity or certain people who watch world cinema or are interested in international cinema, would definitely experience an impact. But the audiences of the regional or Hindi language, they might not actually know much.' The Indian promotions of the film marked Radhika's first work commitment post embracing motherhood. Ask her how is it different from her pre-motherhood work life and she says, 'In the pre-period, I had so much time and I could make myself available at any point. But the post journey has been hard because I have not been able to attend everything. I couldn't attend Cannes, the New York and LA promotions because I have a very small baby and I didn't want to travel all the time. That's the only difference actually. Otherwise, there has not been any other change.' She is also quite proud of the work she has done in the film: 'It's a story about a small-town misfit who becomes an accident outlaw. It's one of the rare times when I've been really thrown out of my comfort zone. Normally, I approach a character with intellectual dissecting. But here we quite de-intellectualised the whole process. It's more about instinct than thoughts and it was fantastic to work like that,' she ends.

Bhumi Pednekar Indulged In Special Coffee, Rajasthani Thali, And More In Udaipur

Another day, another update from Bhumi Pednekar's Udaipur diaries. Today, the focus is on her scrumptious culinary outings. Recently, the actress shared a couple of pictures on her Instagram Stories, offering a glimpse of her morning coffee and delicious lunch later on. The first picture showed The Royals actress sipping on the aromatic beverage in a beautifully decorated cup and saucer that looked nothing short of regal. But it was no ordinary coffee. It came with a striking latte art featuring a portrait of Bhumi herself. She enjoyed the drink while soaking in the beauty of the palace and distant hills. We could feel the bliss through the snap. Watch the full story below: On the next slide featuring her gastronomical adventure in the City of Lakes, Bhumi Pednekar treated herself to a wholesome and authentic Rajasthani thali. Served on a traditional plate was a bowl of rice, kaali dal and bhindi fry. We also spotted ker sangri, a type of vegetable dish made from ker — a wild, tangy-sour berry and sangri — a bean that comes from the Khejri tree. A separate bowl featured gatte ki sabzi, another vegetable curry prepared from gram flour dumplings. It has a yummy and creamy, yogurt-based curry. Bhumi Pednekar also relished the Rajasthani staple — dal-bati-churma. Each of the items was presented on three different plates. Phew! Bhumi skipped a fancy caption and simply added a smiley emoji, which perfectly encapsulated how much she enjoyed her meal. Watch Bhumi Pednekar's Instagram story below: Bhumi Pednekar is a fan of desi cuisine. On another page, the actress indulged in some home-cooked specialities. She sat in front of a table which was loaded with an array of food, including yellow dal, rice, crispy vadas and Usal. FYI: Usal is a typical Maharashtrian curry made from legumes and usually served with rice or pav (bread rolls). This is a must-try for spice-lovers.
