Harry Potter Cast HBO: Author JK Rowling approves Hogwarts' new trio, says ‘Couldn't be happier'
JK Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter book series, approved the new Harry Potter cast for the HBO television series and said the young trio who'll now play Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley are 'wonderful'.
HBO officially announced that Dominic McLaughlin will play the iconic role of Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton will play the clever and brave Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout will play Ron Weasley, Harry's loyal best friend.
Responding to a Potterhead, a Harry Potter fan, Rowling said, 'All three are wonderful. I couldn't be happier.' JK Rowling on Harry Potter HBO's casting
Notably, things went south between Rowling and the original Harry Potter stars – Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, after the author's transphobic comments went viral. Her views on the trans community were met with criticism from the actors who began their careers as child stars in the Harry Potter films.
Most fans were thrilled to see the new Harry Potter cast. However, a few were disappointed by the casting of Hermione Granger and Snape.
'Please tell Dominic, Arabella and Alistair that they are already loved by the fandom and we can't wait to see the show! We wish them all the best and that they have a magic time,' a fan said.
Another added: 'Not bad at all. Good luck all of them and that have fun making this for a new generation of Potterheads.'
'Looks great, looking forward for it, I am sure they are gonna be great,' said another fan.
A fan highlighted that Arabella, the young girl who'll play Hermione in the HBO series, matches the description of the character in the books. 'Dude, that is not bad. I like that casting. They look right. Even the girl has the teeth Emma Watson did not have, but Hermione is supposed to have.'
'After miscasting Snape, I have no faith at them redeeming themselves,' a disappointed fan said.
'They don't deserve all the hate they will probably get cuz of the awful Snape casting... It's gonna flop idk how people don't get it,' a fan added.
However, some fans were unhappy with the remake overall and said, 'A lot of Potter fans will not be watching, I'm one of them.'
'This show will blow, the movies are superior,' added a fan.
Filming for the HBO Original Series is set to begin this summer. The show is planned as a faithful adaptation of the books, with each season covering one novel in the series.

• Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley

John Oliver takes a deep dive into AI slop on Last Week Tonight
Last Week Tonight aired its new episode on June 22, with its main story focusing on the rise of 'AI slop' in social media and content aggregation platforms. The HBO original series, going strong since its debut in 2014, entered its 12th season on February of this year and has thus far aired its 16th episode. In his segment on 'AI slop' John Oliver focused on how easy it is to mass-produce AI content and flood social media feeds with it. It doesn't help that companies such as Meta are deliberately leaning into the AI boom and tweaking their algorithms to allow more such 'slop' content. Lastly, he also discussed AI content's role in proliferating fake news and appropriating the work of real artists and craftsmen. AI slop content is flooding social media AI content is dominating social media feeds these days, with many accounts dedicated to mass-producing short, shareable posts meant to go 'viral'. John Oliver spoke of AI-generated cat stories, videos of AI-generated humans eating fruits and morphing into them, and Facebook posts of people sharing AI-generated wood carvings. While some of these posts can be entertaining, the mass-produced nature of AI slop has only served to intensify the competition for clicks and engagement. AI slop producers are aware of this, and have monetized their own success by selling courses that can 'teach' their audience how to go viral themselves. John Oliver explained how AI content goes viral john oliver and his team commissioning a real artist who was harmed by a i content mills ripping off his work, in their piece ripping a i slop apartand flying him out to appear in the epthis feels wonderful to see from a show with that big a platform John then proceeded to provide his own insights into how AI content creators strategize for free, taking a dig at all these courses. Step 1, as he put it, was to create a monetized page on social media, with Meta, X and YouTube all offering monetization options provided you've crossed a certain threshold. John Oliver did note, however, that premade monetization-ready accounts can be purchased online. Step 2 was to flood the account with as much content as possible in order to increase the chances of going viral. As John Oliver noted, content was a numbers game, and a number of AI tutorials being sold instructed users on how to maximize their rate of content generation in the shortest timeframe possible. Finally, Step 3 was getting paid. AI content creators can get paid directly through social media platforms, or by posting affiliate links to third-party storefronts. John did note, however, that most users would make very little money from such tactics unless their posts went 'megaviral'. He then proceeded to note that the majority of AI slop channels originated from India, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and Pakistan. John ended his story by speaking of how AI slop has been leading to the proliferation of fake news, and brought on wood carver Michael Jones (who's art had been appropriated by AI) for a special appearance where he showed off a carving based on an AI video, thus reversing the trend of AI ripping off artists in a move John admitted was petty.

On X, JK Rowling offered a verbal sneak peek into how the much-anticipated Harry Potter series is shaping. Rowling (@jk_rowling) June 21, 2025 Variety also noted that HBO had made it clear from the outset that Rowling would be involved in reviving the franchise for television, with each book in the series being adapted into a full season. Network CEO Casey Bloys had earlier told the press that Rowling played a significant role in the selection of showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod, who are leading the creative vision for the show. Rowling, however, remains a polarising figure due to comments she has posted on social media since 2020, which many view as transphobic. She frequently uses platforms like X to challenge her critics and respond to public figures, including calling out John Oliver over his comments about trans athletes. Who will play Harry, Hermoine and Ron in Harry Potter series? Previously portrayed by Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint respectively, fresh faces will take over the popular characters in the series. Dominic McLaughlin will take the titular role, while Arabella Stanton will play Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout will be the new Ronald Weasley. The Gilded Age Season 3 returns with drama and shift in power dynamics — full Episode 1 recap and Episode 2 release date
The Gilded Age Season 3: The Gilded Age is back, and the power plays are only just beginning. After a season-long hiatus, HBO's opulent period drama has returned with its third season, once again diving into the glittering world of 1880s New York high society. With old money clashing against new wealth and personal ambitions threatening to upend tradition, The Gilded Age wastes no time getting back into its trademark social tug-of-war. If Episode 1 left you craving more, we've got you covered with a detailed recap of everything that went down, from Bertha Russell's Opera House triumph to the growing tension between Ada and Agnes, and a look at when Season 3 Episode 2 will release. Here's everything you need to know. What's The Gilded Age Season 3 about? Created by Downton Abbey's Julian Fellowes, The Gilded Age explores the collision of wealth, power, and rigid social mores. The fresh season explores the intrigue among four central families: the nouveau-riche Russells (Baranski, Spector, Brown), the aristocratic van Rhijns (Nixon, Walter), the free-thinking Scotts (Benton, Nathan Lane), and the newly arrived Marian Brook (Jacobson). The Gilded Age Season 3 Episode 1 recap In the Season 3 opener Who Is in Charge Here?, The Gilded Age turns its gaze to the once-solid bond between sisters Ada Brook (Cynthia Nixon) and Agnes van Rhijn (Christine Baranski). After losing her fortune in Season 2, Agnes expected life to go on as usual until Ada, newly wealthy from her late husband's estate, casually invites the Temperance League into their Fifth Avenue parlour. Agnes's calm authority shatters as she watches Ada, for the first time, boss around servants and guests with a thrill in her voice. Every pointed question Agnes tosses Ada's way, 'Who's in charge here?' echoes the shock of a household turned upside down. For Agnes, identity and power were inseparable, as she'd always been the older sister, the decision-maker. Stripped of her savings and status, she's left to grapple with an unfamiliar role of spectator in her own home. Baranski describes this as Agnes's toughest challenge yet, learning that deference and privilege aren't guaranteed, no matter your birthright. Ada, who once shied away from every big choice, now feels the rush of calling the shots. Nixon notes Ada's decision-making 'muscles' are new and untested, but she dives in headfirst, delighting in directing household business and discovering a side of herself she never knew existed. It's a heady mix of excitement and uncertainty, as Ada balances newfound power with the fear of misstep. The Gilded Age Season 3 Episode 2 release date and time New episodes drop weekly—Episode 2 of The Gilded Age Season 3 premieres Sunday, June 29, 2025, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and Max. Don't miss the next chapter in this lavish portrait of ambition and change. For more news and updates from the world of Hollywood, keep reading Indiatimes Entertainment.
