Badminton: Top international stars to take part in Al Ain Masters
Some of the world's top shuttlers will be in action at the Al Ain Masters 2025 — the only BWF Tour event in the region.
The Al Ain Masters 2025, a BWF World Tour Super 100 tournament, will be held from September 30 to October 5, at Al Ain Club.
Organised by the UAE Badminton Federation with the support from the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, the event will host 250 shuttlers from 55 countries aiming for valuable world ranking points in the lead-up to the LA 2028 Olympics.
This is the first time the oasis city of Al Ain will host a BWF event of this calibre and the city's rich cultural and natural landmarks promise an unforgettable experience for players, fans, and visitors alongside the high-intensity action on the court.
'We are proud to bring the only BWF Tour event in the region to Al Ain. The Al Ain Masters is more than just a world-class competition — it's a powerful platform to promote badminton in the UAE, inspire the next generation of players, and put our country on the international badminton map," said Noura Aljasmi, president of the UAE Badminton Federation after the organisers unveiled the logo of the tournament.
"The unveiling of the logo signals the start of this exciting journey, and we can't wait to showcase Al Ain to the world.'
Over the years, UAE badminton players have raised the nation's profile on the world stage, firmly placing the UAE on the world badminton map. In a recent groundbreaking milestone, Taabia Omar and Mysha Omar have made history by becoming the first-ever players from the UAE to qualify for the BWF World Championships.
The twin sisters will represent the UAE in the 2025 edition of the global showpiece in Paris (August 25-31). This marks a proud moment for the country and a big step for badminton in the region.
At the Al Ain Masters, local stars will get a big opportunity to test their skills against top international players.
"We are proud to support this milestone event and look forward to seeing its lasting impact on the future of badminton in the UAE,' said Talal Al Hashemi, Executive Director of the Events Sector at the Abu Dhabi Sports Council.

Few expected anything different. Even the lone, purple-clad Al Ain fan standing outside Atlanta's enormous Mercedes-Benz Stadium three hours before kick-off conceded his side would be quickly dismantled by Manchester City and that it was in fact the Garden City club's next match of this expanded Fifa Club World Cup where any joy this month will likely stem. After a humbling 5-0 defeat to Juventus, the prospect of facing Pep Guardiola's swashbuckling City unsurprisingly did not whet many Emirati appetites among the few who had made the trip across the Atlantic. Following that opening round loss to the Italians, Al Ain coach Vladimir Ivic had questioned whether his players watched European football. They certainly did a lot of watching against City: Guardiola's side enjoyed more than 75 per cent possession as they went one better than Juve to serve up a tennis score 6-0 in front of 40,392 fans. Yes, Al Ain created a couple of half chances, and, sure, players such as Nassim Chadli and Erik did their reputations no harm, but City, with all their financial might and global superstars, were never truly troubled. Such was the ease in which the Manchester giants cut through the opposition defence that Guardiola and his players discussed at half-time a need to score seven, enough to give them the outright lead over Juve in Group G. Coming up a goal short was arguably the only blotch on an otherwise perfect night for the City-supporting side of the UAE capital as Guardiola's team booked their place in the last 16. 'It felt at the end that we needed a seventh and we had set that as our target,' said Gundogan, who opened the scoring inside 10 minutes after collecting Bernardo Silva's corner, sending Egyptian defender Ramy Rabia for a cup of karak, and lifting the ball up over goalkeeper Khalid Essa and into an empty net. The embarrassed grin etched on the face of the German midfielder – linked this week to Galatasaray – suggested he was more intent on picking out Erling Haaland at the back post than opening the scoring himself. The contest, billed as an Abu Dhabi Derby, felt, in a football sense at least, more like an exhibition match than anything more meaningful. A Mexican wave on the half-hour confirmed as much. Despite City's desire to score seven – one for each of the Emirates? – they started the second period sluggish, and it took them until the 74th minute to add a fourth. Gundogan again latched on to a Silva pass and slipped the ball over the UAE keeper, before substitute Oscar Bobb added a fifth from distance and the impressive Rayan Cherki bagged his first since joining from Lyon. It was fitting that such a display of footballing excellence took place in Atlanta, the United States' own ambitious metropolis. While the UAE capital is building from the top down, Atlanta is building from the ground up, establishing itself as one of the premier soccer cities in the US, not just in terms of attendance, but also culture, community, and infrastructure. Its MLS franchise Atlanta United regularly plays to huge crowds in this $1.6 billion stadium that will next summer host seven World Cup matches – including a semi-final. They also enjoy local support that has suburban homes proudly flying the club's red-and-black striped flag alongside the omnipresent star-spangled banner. It feels real. Yet this match was about another city starting with A: One UAE city represented by two clubs across three continents. And given the financial differences between the two clubs – Ivic conceded pre-match that one City player costs the same as several of his own – there should be no real shame in Al Ain's struggles. Even if Brazilian midfielder Erik looked despondent as he addressed the media post-match. 'From my first day at this club, I have always dreamt big,' he said. 'Unfortunately, until now at this World Cup, what we have shown is not what we want the supporters to remember. Inshallah, we can be better in the last game.' Erik and Co face Wydad AC on Thursday in Washington DC intent on finishing their campaign on a high. Few in the Middle East have looked of late to Washington for hope and joy, but that is all that Al Ain can now do.

UAE Team Emirates power to double win with Tour de France looming on horizon
UAE Team Emirates-XRG warmed up for the Tour de France in style after securing a double European triumph over the weekend. At the Tour de Suisse, Portuguese rider Joao Almeida snatched victory from overnight leader Kevin Vauquelin by winning the Stage 8 time-trial in clinical fashion. Almeida overturned a 33-second deficit to leapfrog Vauquelin to secure the title by finishing one minute and seven seconds ahead of the Frenchman in the overall standings. Austrian Felix Gall finished 25 seconds behind Almeida on the day with Scotsman Oscar Onley third (+1min 11sec) and Vauquelin fourth (+1min 40 sec). It was a second straight stage victory – and third in total – for Almeida who admitted to nearly blowing the final stage. 'I think I started too fast,' the 26-year-old said after the closing 10.1km uphill time-trial. 'I over-paced in the beginning. In the end, I hoped to have enough gas to push in the last kilometre, but in the end it was not necessary. 'It's a lesson: you should never give up,' added Almeida, who also triumphed at the Tour de Romandie in May. 'Sometimes things go wrong and nothing is perfect, but you need to keep trying. We kept trying and we did it.' Meanwhile, Filippo Baroncini sealed his first general classification triumph at the Baloise Belgium Tour, defending his overall lead on the final flat Stage 5 in Brussels. The Italian moved into the violet leader's jersey after Stage 4 in Durbuy and secured the title after finishing four seconds ahead of British rider Ethan Hayter (Soudal Quickstep), with the Belgian Jenno Berckmoes (Lotto) a further three seconds back in third. 'I came into the race in good shape from the Giro, so I knew if things went our way this week something was possible,' said Baroncini, 24, who saw teammate Sebastian Molano take second place on the final stage. 'The goal was to win with the team because Florian [Vermeersch] was also flying. And the Slovenian looks in ominous form having just beaten old rival Jonas Vingegaard to win his first Criterium du Dauphine title, a victory that left Pogacar 'super happy and proud'. 'We can go home happy to prepare for the Tour,' said the 26-year-old after finishing in the French Alps. 'A lot of positives and all the negatives will turn into positives so it's all good.' After securing a superb triple crown last season, there has been no signs of any let up from Pogacar in the current campaign which has seen him win the UAE Tour, Liege–Bastogne–Liege, Tour of Flanders, Strade Bianche, La Fleche Wallone and now the Dauphine. And Almeida will now turn his attentions to helping his superstar teammate retain the Tour title. 'I'll have time to enjoy this win and I'll be ready for the Tour de France,' he said on Sunday. 'I'll support Tadej Pogacar there and hope we can get more great wins.'
