Herry challenges Aaron-Wooi Yik to reach world No. 1 before world meet
PETALING JAYA: Men's doubles coach Herry Iman Pierngadi has challenged shuttlers Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik to reach the top ranking for the first time before the World Championships from Aug 25 to 31 in Paris.
Currently at No. 2, Aaron-Wooi Yik have a chance to overtake fellow Malaysians Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani for the top spot when they compete next in the back-to-back Japan Open (July 15-20) and China Open (July 22-27).
Those in the former group are hot on the heels of the independent pair, with 89,870 ranking points to their 91,090.
Herry has urged Aaron-Wooi Yik to take this opportunity to finally achieve the elusive milestone in their careers and give themselves a huge boost before the prestigious world meet.
"For me, it's important for Aaron-Wooi Yik to become world No. 1 before the world meet," said Herry after overseeing a training session at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara on Friday (June 20).
"If they can achieve this, then it will be good as it will give them a better seeding in the tournament.
"They have a chance, and this (becoming world No. 1) has been one of their personal targets."
Based on their hot form since April under Herry's guidance, Aaron-Wooi Yik have a good opportunity to overtake Sze Fei-Izzuddin.
The 2022 world champions captured the Asian Championships, Thailand Open and Singapore Open titles and finished runners-up to world No. 7 teammates Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun in the Malaysian Masters.
Meanwhile, Sze Fei-Izzuddin, who became world No. 1 last month, have struggled for consistency this year.
The pair captured the Indian Open in January but failed to reach the semi-finals in all their outings since their triumph.
Sze Fei-Izzuddin also face a fight to hold on to their top spot as they won both the Japan and China Opens last year and need to do well this year too to protect their ranking points.
Aaron-Wooi Yik, on the other hand, missed both the tourneys last year due to the latter's toe injury and does not have to worry about defending any points.
The draw for the Japan Open, which will be held in Tokyo, will be released on July 8.

The Penang-born player is hoping to use the experience gained with Ee Wei in his new partnership with Pei Kee. 'Playing with a senior player like Ee Wei was a turning point for me. I learned a lot from her,' said Bing Kun. 'The style of play with Pei Kee will be different and I need to help her get her rhythm back in the mixed doubles as she has been focusing solely on women's doubles for the past six months. 'She has also been playing more in the back court in women's doubles, so I need to help her adapt to playing at front. Herry needs masseurs under RTG to knead shuttlers to success
PETALING JAYA: Athletes under the elite Road to Gold (RTG) programme are entitled to request anything that can help boost their performance and for men's doubles head coach Herry Iman Pierngadi, that means asking for more masseurs. Herry knows that a relaxed body can reduce stress, anxiety and enhance performance. The former Indonesia coaching legend currently oversees two pairs in the RTG programme, world No. 2 Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and rising duo Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun. The Indonesian coach admitted that the current number of masseurs is insufficient, especially during tournaments, as players often have to wait their turn and share with other teammates. As such, Herry hopes at least two more masseurs can be added to the support team to ease the workload, particularly during overseas competitions. 'I'd like to thank RTG for their support so far. But going forward, we do need more masseurs. ''We have many players competing at each tournament, and having only one or two masseurs isn't enough,' said Herry. 'If we could get two additional masseurs, that would really help. ''They're human too, they use a lot of energy and get tired after treating so many players.' Herry also expressed hopes for more supplements and vitamins to be provided for Aaron-Wooi Yik and Wei Chong-Kai Wun. 'Right now, they are already taking some supplements, but every athlete has different needs. ''It would be ideal if they could receive additional vitamins tailored to their individual requirements,' he added. In addition to the two men's doubles pairs, the RTG programme also includes women's duo Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah and mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei. More recently, two top professional pairings have also come on board, world No. 1 men's doubles pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani and experienced mixed doubles duo Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie.
