US Embassy, CCQ partner to launch American Corner in Qatar

The U.S. Embassy Doha and the Community College of Qatar (CCQ) have announced the official launch of the American Corner at CCQ, marking a significant milestone in the U.S.-Qatar partnership. This is the only American Corner in Qatar and it provides a dynamic platform for fostering cultural and educational engagement with youth in Qatar, established opinion leaders, and the wider public.
The opening ceremony featured remarks from U.S. Ambassador to Qatar HE Timmy Davis and CCQ President Dr. Khalid Al-Horr, followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony. This American Corner focuses on promoting education, American history and values, English-language learning, entrepreneurship, and alumni engagement. It aims to empower youth in Qatar and strengthen academic and cultural partnerships between the U.S. and Qatar.
During the ceremony, Dr. Khalid Al-Horr, expressed his pride in the cultural partnership, stating, 'We believe that culture is a cornerstone in shaping individuals and building the future. The American Corner, Qatar's first of its kind, is more than just a new academic space; it is a significant addition to the college's knowledge resources. It is a natural extension of our vision to offer a learning environment enriched by diverse perspectives and global cultures. It inspires students to explore, engage in dialogue, and nurture their critical thinking skills.'
He added, 'This corner will offer our students and researchers a unique opportunity to deepen intercultural understanding, benefit from valuable academic and cultural content, and participate in language and educational activities that will expand their skills and intellectual horizons.'
The establishment of the American Corner is a deliverable of the 2024 U.S.-Qatar Strategic Dialogue and stems from the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in March 2024. It symbolizes the shared commitment of both nations to fostering understanding, education, and community engagement.
His Excellency Timmy Davis said 'Today marks a significant milestone in our shared journey to strengthen the bonds of friendship and cooperation between the United States and Qatar. The American Corner at CCQ is more than just a room—it's a vibrant space where students and the wider community can come together to learn, connect, and grow. It reflects our shared commitment to education, innovation, and dialogue, and I hope it will inspire a lifelong love of learning and a deeper understanding between our two nations.'

Trump extends TikTok ban deadline for 3rd time
Agencies President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday extending TikTok's operations in the U.S. for another 90 days, granting his administration additional time to negotiate a deal to transfer the social media platform into American ownership. Trump disclosed the executive order on the Truth Social platform Thursday morning. 'As he has said many times, President Trump does not want TikTok to go dark. This extension will last 90 days, which the administration will spend working to ensure this deal is closed so that the American people can continue to use TikTok with the assurance that their data is safe and secure,' White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement on Tuesday. It is the third time Trump has extended the deadline. The first one was through an executive order on Jan. 20, his first day in office, after the platform went dark briefly when a national ban – approved by Congress and upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court – took effect. The second was in April, when White House officials believed they were nearing a deal to spin off TikTok into a new company with U.S. ownership that fell apart after China backed out following Trump's tariff announcement. It is not clear how many times Trump can – or will – keep extending the ban as the government continues to try to negotiate a deal for TikTok, which is owned by China's ByteDance. While there is no clear legal basis for the extensions, so far there have been no legal challenges to fight them. Trump has amassed more than 15 million followers on TikTok since he joined last year, and he has credited the trendsetting platform with helping him gain traction among young voters. He said in January that he has a 'warm spot for TikTok.' TikTok praised Trump for signing an extension Thursday. 'We are grateful for President Trump's leadership and support in ensuring that TikTok continues to be available for more than 170 million American users and 7.5 million U.S. businesses that rely on the platform as we continue to work with Vice President Vance's Office,' the company said in a statement. As the extensions continue, it appears less and less likely that TikTok will be banned in the U.S. any time soon. The decision to keep TikTok alive through an executive order has received some scrutiny, but it has not faced a legal challenge in court – unlike many of Trump's other executive orders. Jeremy Goldman, analyst at Emarketer, called TikTok's U.S situation a 'deadline purgatory.' The whole thing 'is starting to feel less like a ticking clock and more like a looped ringtone. This political Groundhog Day is starting to resemble the debt ceiling drama: a recurring threat with no real resolution.' That's not stopping TikTok from pushing forward with its platform, Forrester analyst Kelsey Chickering says. 'TikTok's behavior also indicates they're confident in their future, as they rolled out new AI video tools at Cannes this week,' Chickering notes. 'Smaller players, like Snap, will try to steal share during this 'uncertain time,' but they will not succeed because this next round for TikTok isn't uncertain at all.'

Qatar's participation highlights its leading economic position on regional and international levels and aims to underscore the attractive investment environment available for foreign investment. The delegation shed the light on the key investment incentives, advantages, and initiatives steered to support the private sector and enhance the competitiveness and diversification of national economy under Qatar National Vision 2030. The minister of state took part in the forum's plenary session attended by President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin alongside prominent political and economic figures and global decision-makers. He also participated in a high-level panel discussion entitled 'In Search of New Growth Drivers: Redesigning the Global Financial and Trade Framework,' alongside senior officials including Deputy Prime Minister of Russian Federation Alexey Overchuk, Deputy Prime Minister of Lao People's Democratic Republic Saleumxay Kommasith, Minister of Finance of Russian Federation Anton Siluanov, Chairman and CEO of VTB Bank Andrey Kostin, Chairman and President of the African Export-Import Bank Benedict Okey Oramah, Founder of RUSAL, GAZ Group, and the Volnoe Delo Foundation Oleg Deripaska and Yaroslav Kuzminov, and Yaroslav Kuzminov, Academic Supervisor at the Higher School of Economics (National Research University). He also underscored the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) as a successful model of regional integration, highlighting its harmonised economic systems and policies, and shared infrastructure and services. He noted that the GCC continues to make steady progress towards full economic integration, further strengthening its position as a prominent global financial and investment hub. He stated that GCC's aggregate GDP reached approximately $2.2 trillion, ranking it ninth globally, while its capital markets hold the seventh position worldwide by market capitalisation, accounting for 4.3 percent of global markets. The non-oil sector contributed 75.9 percent of the region's GDP in 2024. Al Sayed also highlighted Qatar's success in advancing a digital economy, underpinned by its robust infrastructure and adoption of Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies. He noted that this enables Qatar to keep pace with global transformations and position itself as a leader in the knowledge economy. On the sidelines of the forum, he held bilateral talks with Maxim Markovich, Deputy Minister of Agriculture of the Russian Federation, and Andrey Kostin, chairman and CEO of VTB Bank. The meetings explored prospects for cooperation in various fields and the incentives, legislation overhaul, and promising opportunities Qatar offers to encourage foreign investment. He also toured the forum's accompanying exhibition, including the pavilion of the Kingdom of Bahrain, this year's guest of Honour, and several other exhibitors. He was briefed on the latest services and innovations in sectors such as industry, financial services and insurance, information technology, healthcare, education and science, business consultancy, telecommunications, logistics and transport, real estate, hospitality and tourism, and metals and mining. The official delegation representing Qatar at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum included representatives from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Qatar Investment Authority, Investment Promotion Agency (Invest Qatar), and Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
