TRENDS hosts symposium exploring prospects for China-Middle East relations
20 June 2025 10:45 ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD) TRENDS Research & Advisory, through its Virtual Office in China, kicked off its participation in the 31st edition of the Beijing International Book Fair 2025 by organising a research symposium titled 'Prospects for China–Middle East Relations in Light of Global Transformations', held at the centre's booth at the China National Convention in the seminar—moderated by Farida Bai Yi Nan, Head of the Arabic Language Department at China Today magazine—discussed the role of the Belt and Road Initiative in enhancing Arab–Chinese economic integration, the opportunities and domains of cultural and educational cooperation between China and Arab countries, China's position on key Middle Eastern issues, and how Chinese intellectual elites perceive partnerships with Gulf and Arab Jiyuan, a researcher at the Centre for Arab Studies at Zhejiang International Studies University, emphasised that cultural cooperation is a vital component in China–Arab relations. She noted that the exchange of knowledge and culture between China and Arab nations has reached a solid level. For example, over 48 universities in China teach the Arabic language, and enthusiasm for learning Chinese is rising across the Arab world. The UAE and Saudi Arabia have both incorporated Chinese into their national education curricula, and there are currently more than 20 Confucius Institutes across the Middle Al Shehhi, Senior Researcher and Deputy Head of the Scientific Research Sector at TRENDS, stated that China–Arab relations represent a unique model of civilisational interaction, merging the authenticity of tradition with future aspirations for prosperity. The UAE is also the primary destination for Chinese tourists in the region, with more than one million tourists last year, alongside over 100 Chinese schools in the UAE—further enhancing educational and cultural exchange.

Muslim Brotherhood rallies around Iran, calls for Islamic unity against Israel
The Muslim Brotherhood, one of the most powerful political entities in the Middle East, has rallied around Iran in the wake of Israel's devastating strikes on the country and urged disparate Muslim groups to unite and 'confront the Zionist entity'. In a letter addressed to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Wednesday, the acting head of the movement, Salah Abdel Haq, said his group expressed 'full support' for the Islamic Republic as Israel's assault stretched into a second week. Haq described Israel's attacks as a broader assault on the resistance axis in the region, saying they mark 'a new phase of aggression against Palestine', driven by Israel's goal of weakening regional powers with the backing of the United States and other western states. 'We are one nation, in the religious, spiritual, civilisational, and geopolitical senses alike,' he said, adding that Israel 'does not differentiate between our ethnicities or sects'. 'Our primary weapon… is the unity of the Islamic Ummah,' he said, before calling on Muslim forces to overcome past divisions and redirect their focus toward 'confronting the Zionist entity'. 'Threats to assassinate [Khamenei] are foolish and reckless, and will have disastrous consequences… Merely uttering them is an offence to hundreds of millions of believers and those connected to Islam, and it is utterly reprehensible. Today, we are more determined and united around him.' Regional fallout On Thursday, sources close to Hezbollah told Middle East Eye that the Lebanese group could join the hostilities if the United States intervened directly, or if Iran's supreme leader was killed. Those scenarios would 'shift the calculations' and may push the group into the conflict.
