Derry public get first look at Factory Girls artwork

A long-awaited piece of public art to remember Londonderry's shirt factory workers has been set in place in the city centre almost 20 years after plans for a sculpture were first mooted.The artwork is part of the wider public realm scheme at Harbour Square, near the Guildhall.The Derry public were given their first glimpse of the sculpture by artist Chris Wilson with the erection of its three spools on Tuesday.They remain under wraps for now but council officials say the artwork will officially be unveiled in the new year.
Derry was a world leader in shirt production for much of the last century and the city's factory girls were the driving force.
In July last year, the Department for Communities (DfC) approved £1.3m of funding for the redevelopment of Harbour Square including the factory girls artwork. A different factory girls sculpture was shelved back in 2018 when councillors were told it would cost more than £330,000 to complete.At that time Stormont's Department for Communities, which funded the project, said it no longer represented value for money.Artist Louise Walsh had started work on the factory girls artwork in 2006.The sculpture was beset by problems since being commissioned by the then Derry City Council.It was to be located at King Street in the Waterside.That was then changed to Harbour Square due to planning problems and the move required a redesign of the original piece that meant costs spiralled.
It cost £85,000 of public money before the unfinished work was shelved.Plans for the new piece of public art were announced in 2020.At the time, DfC said the it would celebrate the industrial heritage of the city, particularly the men and women who worked in the factories.
What was the significance of Derry's factory girls?
Derry was historically a centre for shirt-making, with the industry developing from the late 19th Century.By the 1920s, there were more than 40 shirt factories employing thousands of workers, with thousands more servicing the industry from their homes.The Tillie and Henderson factory, near Craigavon Bridge, was even mentioned in Karl Marx's famous book, Capital. The vast majority of those who did the job were women.They were immortalised by the songwriter Phil Coulter in The Town I Loved So Well.There were still hundreds of people employed in clothing manufacturing up to the early 2000s.However, the industry has since been all but wiped out in the face of global competition, with one of the last traditional handmade shirt makers in Britain and Ireland closing in May 2019.

One of her posts about the song on the platform this week showed Rita sat on a plane. ‌ She teased that she had heard her new single being played by someone sat next to her on the flight. The video showed her reacting, with her writing over it: "Me: Hearing heat playing out of the person next to me's headphones." Rita's seen wearing a face mask at the start of the video, before removing it. Sporting headphones herself, she then lip syncs to Rihanna singing: "Uh oh! Boner alert!" The lyric is from the Lonely Island song Shy Ronnie 2: Ronnie & Clyde. The MTV Video Music Award winner wrote in the caption of the video that was uploaded to the platform just days ago: "He's definitely got good taste." She concluded the caption of her post with an emoji depicting a tongue. Fans didn't seem convinced that the situation had actually happened though. One person reacted: "Out of all the things that have never happened, this has never happened the most." Another said: "Girl that 100% did not happen." A third viewer teased: "You have a lovely imagination." Someone else said in their response to Rita's video: "Hey, let's be nice. Her headphones likely disconnected and she didn't understand the song was playing from her phone." ‌ Others pointed out that she was wearing headphones herself. One commented: "You heard it with your headphones on??" Another said: "She must have great hearing to be able to hear music from someone else's headphones while wearing headphones herself." Someone else suggested that her husband Taika Waititi may have been beside her on the flight. They teased: "It's your husband next to you." Several fans shared their amusement over the comments on the post. One wrote beside laughing emojis: "These comments are killing me." ‌ Rita's post has amassed more than 60,000 likes on the platform. It was followed-up by two other videos of her sat on board the flight, including one where she expressed gratitude to her supporters and teased it's "just the beginning". She wrote over footage of herself looking teary-eyed: "Flights make me emotional and grateful." In the caption, Rita added: "So grateful for all I have thank you to all the lovely people in my life and the ones who have supported me from the start - it's just the beginning." Then, in a third video taken on the flight, she shared "advice" for fans. The video showed her putting her middle finger up to the camera as she smiled. Over the clip, she wrote: "POV: nobody. Me: the F's I give." She added in the caption: "Bit of advice for anyone who doesn't match your energy or bring good vibes - protect your ORA."

Glasgow judo champion named winner at Young Scot Awards

Rebecca Bradley, 20, was named the winner of the Sport and Physical Fitness Award at the Young Scot Awards. The competition, which is the only national awards ceremony for young people in Scotland, is designed to recognise positive role models who are helping to inspire future generations. The young champion has used her martial arts experience to create female-only judo sessions at Clyde Judo Club in Paisley, hoping to create a safe space for women and girls. These sessions became an immediate sell-out success, leading Rebecca to start up another set of judo classes for refugees. Rebecca received her award from the event's headline sponsor sportscotland. She said: "I'm absolutely buzzing to win this award. "I've been involved with judo since I was eight, and it has given me so much confidence and community over the years. "I wanted to pass that on, especially to women, girls, and people who might not otherwise get the chance to try it. JLS star rushed to hospital in back of ambulance for medical emergency
