Ruling Court forced to miss Derby due to ground conditions

Jockey William Buick rode in the first race and reported conditions to be softer than ideal for Charlie Appleby's Justify colt.
With plenty of rain forecast, and the potential for it to be torrential, Appleby took the decision to take his stable star out.
'It's very disappointing, he'd been aimed here and he's in great nick, but the ground conditions yesterday were a concern with the filly (Desert Flower in the Oaks) and William said it rode genuine good to soft yesterday,' said Appleby.
'We appreciate it was probably drying out through the course of the day (on Friday), but there was rain overnight on open ground
'We arrived here today with an open mind, William rode in the first and he felt it was genuine good to soft and so did the other jocks.'
He added: 'It's disappointing, but ultimately as an operation we've done what we think is right for the horse.
'It's the ultimate challenge for these horses and as we saw yesterday with the filly it was disappointing, which of course it is when you have an unbeaten filly. It was her first defeat, but it was probably track, ground and trip that beat us and we were looking down the barrel of the same with this colt today.
'It is ground that has ultimately made the decision, the trip we were still confident like we were with the filly – you always are until you run them and get that answer.
'I feel it was the right call and we will look forward to Ascot with him. With today, if you win it's fantastic, but if you get beat in a race of this nature in these conditions you'll miss six weeks with him and that means missing the St James's Palace and Coral-Eclipse which are two important races that could be added to his resume.'
Ruling Court has been put in as 5-2 second-favourite behind Field Of Gold at evens for the St James's Palace Stakes with Coral.
Appleby added: 'We'll stick to the mile at Ascot and then look forwards from there. We've always been keen to step him up and hindsight is great isn't it. If we had been fourth in the Guineas we would have said great that's a lovely Derby trial, yet you win a Guineas and there is so much more in the pot.
'Ultimately we have a high-class horse on our hands and we've made the right decision by the horse.'
The decision to remain at a mile with Ruling Court has opened the door for 2000 Guineas third Shadow Of Light to revert to six furlongs for the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot, the distance he won the Middle Park Stakes over as a juvenile.
Appleby said: 'I'd say if Ruling Court does go for the St James's Palace as planned we'll give strong consideration to dropping Shadow Of Light back in trip for the Commonwealth Cup.'
The Moulton Paddocks handler also provided an update on Desert Flower.
He said: 'She's fine this morning, albeit she knows she's had a race in those conditions. We'll give it a day or two then reassess.'

Graffard added: 'I am lucky she is owned by a fantastic breeding operation and she has earned her place there. We don't need to put a pair of blinkers on her – she has earned her place at stud. She has a lot of ability and she will produce fantastic stock that will come here and beat everybody. 'It's very hard to be competitive here, firstly, and to win here is even harder. You come with very talented horses, but today I think we can't complain. We have two fillies placed in Group Ones (Zarigana and Rayevka in the Commonwealth Cup) and they earned their places at stud, and so for the operation it is very positive.' Back in third was Aidan O'Brien's January, who after twice chasing home 1000 Guineas heroine Desert Flower as a two-year-old was back to her best following a below-par return in the Irish 1,000 Guineas last month. 'She ran OK, it was a little bit messy early, the race, but Ryan said she ran well, so we're happy and we think she will come forward a little bit. 'Maybe one of the fillies' races at Newmarket will be next for her, something like that.'

Headline buy Ghostwriter gets mile-and-a-half chance in Hardwicke

Cox and previous owner Jeff Smith had been itching to step the four-year-old up in trip to a mile and a half following a succession of good runs over 10 furlongs last season against the likes of City Of Troy and Look De Vega. Bought by Kia Joorabchian's Amo Racing at Monday's Goffs London Sale, he will be ridden by David Egan for the first time. 'He obviously went through the ring on Monday but we've been wanting to step him up in trip for a little while now and this looks a good time to do it,' said Cox. 'He ran well in the Tattersalls Gold Cup and prior to that in Dubai so I'm hopeful that he'll relish the chance to step up in trip and I hope he does well for his new connections. 'The race has changed in complexion with Kalpana not running. I'm hugely respectful to Rebel's Romance as he's such a consistent performer and he's a credit to everyone involved with him, but I'm hopeful we can get involved at the finish. 'He's run well on the straight track at Ascot before, he's never been on the round course there but I'm happy that he's in excellent form and I hope he can put his best foot forward.' The aforementioned Rebel's Romance has been an absolute star for Charlie Appleby and Godolphin. Now seven, he has won Group One races in America, Germany, Hong Kong and Dubai over a mile and a half and last time out won the Yorkshire Cup over an extra two furlongs. 'I keep telling people, if I need to explain what Rebel's Romance is all about, they are probably not racing fans,' said Appleby on his globetrotting stable stalwart. 'Ascot back up in distance will hopefully be more suitable, but he will have to perform to his very best as it's an incredible Hardwicke and he'll need to be on top form to make the top three – if he was to finish in the first three we would be delighted.' Godolphin and Wathnan are to the fore in the Chesham Stakes, too, with Appleby's Treanmor living up to his €2million price tag on debut. Appleby said: 'We were confident going into Newmarket over the six furlongs and he qualifies for the Chesham on the back of his sire Frankel. 'Frankel has phenomenal stats here at Ascot and I think he's second only to Dubawi, so we come here confident the step up in trip will suit and I think both physically and mentally he has come forward from that first run at Newmarket.' Humidity was bought by Wathnan following a winning Newbury debut in the Cheveley Park Stud colours. 'He was bred for this and both physically and on pedigree you would think he would want further than six furlongs,' said Brown. 'His full-brother Holloway Boy won this on debut in 2022 and hopefully it is the right spot for him. 'I was really impressed with him at Newbury but this is going to be a tough race. Aidan (O'Brien) is bringing a smart horse over (Moments Of Joy) and Charlie Appleby's Treanmor looked special when winning at Newmarket. 'However, our lad is one from one and did it well and we're now going to find out how good he is.'
