#SHOWBIZ: RM40.6mil in 13 days: 'Ejen Ali' sequel is highest-grossing local animated film

KUALA LUMPUR: Popular local animated film 'Ejen Ali The Movie 2' (EATM2) has achieved a remarkable box office collection of RM40.6 million, making it the country's highest-grossing animated film to date.
Produced by Primeworks Studios and Wau Animation, EATM2 has surpassed the previous record holder, Mechamato Movie, which garnered RM35.9 million at the box office in 2022.
In a statement yesterday, the film's director, Usamah Zaid Yasin, attributed this success to the enduring appeal of local animated movies among viewers.
"EATM2 builds upon the legacy of 'Ejen Ali The Movie' on a grander scale, establishing itself as a must-see for the entire family," he said.
"Our production team extends its gratitude to over 2.5 million viewers for their unwavering support.
"This triumph is not just ours, but a victory for the entire local animation industry. Thank you, Malaysia, for believing in our own stories."
Media Prima Television Networks and Primeworks Studios chief executive officer, Nini Yusof, commented, "With this momentum, EATM2 continues to pave the way for local animated films to penetrate the international market."
EATM2 follows 12-year-old superspy Ejen Ali as he confronts a phantom menace named Ciro, utilising more advanced espionage technology than ever before.
Ali becomes the pilot for a high-stakes mission within Satria, an elite programme powered by an AI-assisted mecha suit.
The mission takes a darker turn when the mysterious hacker Neonimus resurfaces, driven by a personal vendetta against Ali.
Compared to the 2019 original, 'Ejen Ali The Movie', this sequel boasts more explosive action and a deeper, more immersive narrative.

Ejen Ali 2 continues its amazing run as producers now hoping for mission accomplished with an impressive RM65mil haul

Hit animated movie "Ejen Ali The Movie 2" (EATM2) is still doing well with local cinemagoers and producers are now hoping to reach the mission possible of seeing a total haul of RM65 million, itself that will be an amazing benchmark for animated movies. Producers of the movie, Primeworks Studios, have called the Malaysian fans of the movies, whom they have nicknames 'Agents', to continue supporting the movie, which has already hit the magic number of RM55.1 million this week, the highest ever collection for an animated movie in Malaysia. "Agents, time is running out. We are in a mission now. We are hoping for a never before seen collection for an animated movie and we hope our agents will see us through in reaching the target," said Pinework Studios in a statement. The media release also pointed out that the biggest number of fans for the movie are from Selangor, Federal Territories (KL and Putrajaya), Johor, Perak and Kedah . "We are counting on our Agents the deliver and ensure further success of this movie. We thank the fans for the immense support and we have they continue supporting us. "Let's create another big success for local animated films. The producers also promise to up the tempo and raise the bar in our future ventures. Again, we thank all agents (fans) for their fantastic support," said Pinework Studios. Even more impressive, EATM2 has now surpassed the grossing of blockbuster films from Hollywood and Asia over the past two months. This is a clear testament to the confidence and extraordinary support of Malaysian audiences for animated films that are based on local identity and spirit. 'This success does not belong to WAU Animation alone but to all the agents who believed in and stood by us from the beginning," said Usamah Zaid Yasin, director of the EATM2 film. "I truly appreciate the dedication of the entire WAU Animation team who have poured their energy and creativity into making this film a success. "Thank you also to our production partner, Primeworks Studios, who have given their full commitment in promoting this film, and have always come up with fresh and bold new ideas to ensure that EATM2 continues to be the audience's choice. "And of course, the highest appreciation goes to the fans who have been our backbone and main source of inspiration since day one.' From an animated series on television to the silver screen, Ejen Ali has grown into a mature and influential franchise. This second film not only strengthens the brand, but also reflects the evolution of local animated storytelling that is bolder, more dimensional and touches the hearts of various audiences. The first two seasons of the series were followed by 'Ejen Ali The Movie' in November 2019, which grossed an impressive RM30 million (US$8 million) in Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, and Indonesia, making it one of the highest-grossing animated films in Malaysia to date. The latest installment, 'Ejen Ali Season 3', also holds the title of being the first Malaysian animated intellectual property to be co-produced with Disney+ Hotstar South-East Asia, and the series was launched exclusively on the streaming service in June 2022. For the record, EATM2 is still showing in cinemas nationwide.

How ‘Ejen Ali' could spark STEM interest among students

Published on: Wednesday, June 18, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jun 18, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: 'Ejen Ali The Movie 2' features the armoured 'Satria suit', which is powered by artificial intelligence to assist the young agents on their missions. (WAU Animation pic) PETALING JAYA: In recent years, interest among Malaysian students in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) has been in decline. According to the education ministry, only around 15.2% of students chose the science stream for the 2023/2024 academic year, while over 100,000 students failed science and mathematics subjects in last year's SPM examination. Advertisement This downward trend could negatively impact national development, as STEM is a key driver of technological progress and innovation. Without a young generation interested and skilled in STEM, achieving developed-nation status becomes increasingly difficult. So, while this may sound surprising, it is heartening that sources of entertainment such as the local animation 'Ejen Ali' could help promote the value of science, engineering and technology. The futuristic world of Cyberaya in 'Ejen Ali' showcases advanced tech based on STEM principles such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and renewable-energy sources in the form of Azurium. 'Ejen Ali' gives students a clear picture that STEM is not merely theory confined to classrooms, but is something that can be applied in real life. Then there's 'Ejen Ali The Movie 2', the recent full-length feature that has won the hearts of Malaysians, grossing over RM50 million within 18 days of screening nationwide. The film introduces the armoured 'Satria suit', powered by artificial intelligence to assist Mata agents in their missions. The suit not only transforms to fit its user's needs but is also equipped with detection and defence systems. While it is clearly fictitious, its notable appearance in the movie could inspire young viewers to explore an interest in technology and engineering. Additionally, 'Ejen Ali' opens up space for discussions within families and schools about the importance of values like integrity, social responsibility, and ethics in the use of technology. This is essential as, to prevent misuse, technological advancement must be accompanied by moral acuity. The animation teaches students that being a scientist or engineer isn't just about intelligence – it is also also about being kind, ethical and responsible. On that note, beyond just watching 'Ejen Ali', parents and teachers are crucial in nurturing students' interest – by explaining technological concepts in a simple and relatable manner, for example, or by taking children to science exhibitions, supporting their participation in innovation competitions, or involving them in STEM-related activities. Ideally, 'Ejen Ali The Movie 2' will continue to be a source of inspiration and catalyst for interest among the younger generation. The film features even more advanced tech and a deeper storyline than its predecessors, which will hopefully attract more students to view STEM as an exciting and promising field for the future.
