'We want adversity' Texas A&M HC Bucky McMillan is confident ahead of his inaugural season
New Texas A&M basketball head coach Bucky McMillan has been one of the lone bright spots for Texas A&M Athletics over the past three months, as the Buzz Williams era came to a close after six seasons, which never included a trip to the Sweet 16 despite three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances.
McMillan's fast-paced offense, energy, and consistent passion for the game have rejuvenated a program that was considered successful but had been falling short when it mattered year after year. Since taking over, McMillan has proven to be an elite recruiter from the transfer portal, landing 12 commitments, led by former Indiana star forward Mackenzie Mgbako and former Creighton standout guard Pop Issacs.
Outside of several of the 13 new additions who have yet to make it to campus for summer camp, McMillan's 2025 roster has enough talent to compete for a postseason bid this coming season. While he is looking to add two more players to fill out the 15-man roster, that shouldn't be an issue based on his recent success.
On Wednesday night, McMillan joined Texas A&M Football head coach Mike Elko in Dallas for the second consecutive Coach's Night, marking McMillan's first appearance this offseason. In stark contrast to Buzz Williams, McMillan's confidence and belief in what the basketball program can be should excite every Aggie fan come this fall.
"I do think that this place is destined to compete for championships. I want to do that here. We will compete for championships when we don't focus so much on what we're going to do and instead focus on how we're going to do it."
Texas A&M's basketball program has never advanced to the Elite Eight. While the Aggies are likely a ways away from making serious noise in the NCAA Tournament, McMillan's vision and underdog mentality align perfectly with the Aggies' fan base, as he craves adversity to keep the team on its toes throughout the season.
"We want adversity. We want that. When there is true adversity and things aren't going exactly how we want it to go, that's an opportunity for all these Aggies to come together and do something incredible."
On the court, one of the major issues that plagued the Aggies last season was a lack of offensive consistency, as well as struggles at the free-throw line. These two areas will be addressed and improved with better shooting talent and coaching that begins this summer. Good things are on the horizon, and the 2025 Aggie basketball squad will be one of the highest-scoring offenses in the SEC.
"We take free-throws, layups and threes, and we get really good at it."

Notre Dame hosts commit Rodney Dunham and several key prospects
Notre Dame's campus is bustling today, at least when it comes to visiting football recruits. Five-star Fighting Irish commit Rodney Dunham, an edge rusher, led the way off the bus in South Bend. He was followed by wide receiver Bubba Frazier, edge rusher Ebenezer Ewetade, linebacker Kobe Clapper, offensive tackle Charlie Thom and defensive lineman Elijah Golden. Advertisement Notre Dame has been garnering praise for its recruiting classes, and while there's no guarantee any of these players commit to the Irish -- or if any of them will pan out in terms of production, should they sign -- it's clear that head coach Marcus Freeman knows that he and his staff will have to work hard to get back to, and beyond, the level reached in 2024. Recruiting is never-ending, and it's a good sign that the Irish are hosting so many touted prospects. Oregon QB Targets Bryson Beaver, Matt Ponatoski Turned Heads at Elite 11 Finals
Coming out of the Elite 11 Finals this week in Los Angeles, a narrative was built that this is among the best crop of quarterbacks that the camp has seen in quite some time. So it bodes well that a pair of Oregon Ducks targets, Bryson Beaver and Matt Ponatoski, are receiving some high praise coming out of the camp. After the three-day camp, Beaver was named the No. 3 top performer, while Ponatoski came in at No. 7 on the list. In a story from The Athletic's Bruce Feldman, the CFB analyst's biggest "pleasant surprise" was seeing what Ponatoski could do with the ball in his hands. "The most pleasant surprise to me was Ohio's Matt Ponatoski," Feldman wrote. "The two-sport star has an electric arm, having been clocked at 97 mph as a pitcher. That arm wowed me Thursday morning in his 7-on-7 performance. The 6-1, 196-pounder, who is uncommitted, made two 'wow' throws to receivers who didn't look open at all, but he fired the ball into the only spot he could and completed the passes. It was impressive." Meanwhile, Beaver turned a lot of heads throughout the weekend, coming in as a relatively unknown prospect who has exploded onto the scene in the last week. "Bryson Beaver, a three-star recruit from Southern California (No. 54 QB in the class), turned a lot of heads as well this week. The 6-2, 200-pounder, who recently decommitted from Boise State, is getting a lot of interest from some Power 4 powers, including Oregon. It wasn't hard to see why. He has an excellent arm and good feet." In his "superlatives" for the Elite 11 Finals, Charles Power named Beaver the player from the week with the strongest arm, while Ponatoski was the most accurate of the bunch. Both Ponatoski and Beaver are expected to take their official visits to Oregon this week, with the Ducks likely getting a commitment from one of them. At the moment, there is a belief that Ponatoski could get selected in the MLB draft as a top high school prospect this summer, which might lead to him never taking a snap in college football. That may lead to the Ducks prioritizing Beaver, who is among the fastest-rising QB prospects in the nation.
