Former Motherwell boss Ian Baraclough suffers back and neck injuries in swimming accident on holiday
Ian Baraclough is recovering in hospital in Mauritius after an accident on a family holiday
Former Motherwell manager and current Partick Thistle sporting director Ian Baraclough is recovering in hospital after suffering major back and neck injuries in a swimming accident.
Baraclough, who was in charge of the Steelmen between 2014-15 when they beat Rangers in the Premiership play-off final, was on a family holiday in Mauritius when he suffered serious injuries while swimming and "required immediate surgery to ensure that the injuries were not life-changing."
A statement released by Partick Thistle today revealed the 54-year-old ex-Northern Ireland boss will be unable to return to Scotland for several weeks as he recovers in hospital.
And Baraclough praised the surgeons at Wellkin Hospital, Mauritius for their 'exceptional care' during a harrowing experience for him and his family.
The club statement read: "Partick Thistle wish to advise that Sporting Director Ian Baraclough is currently recovering in hospital after suffering extensive back and neck injuries in an accident just over a week ago.
"Ian was injured whilst swimming and required immediate surgery to ensure that the injuries were not life-changing, and it is expected it will be several weeks before he can return to the country and a further period of recovery will be needed before he is able to return to The Wyre Stadium at Firhill.
"The club have been in constant contact with Ian's family since the accident and have now also been able to thankfully speak to Ian.
Ian said: 'On behalf of myself, my wife, my children and my wider family I would like to thank the surgeons and staff at the Wellkin Hospital, Mauritius for their exceptional care.'
'I would also like to thank Club Chairman Richard Beastall and all of the team at Partick Thistle for their support and well wishes. In my short space of time I have already felt the close bond and drive from staff, players, fans and volunteers that make Thistle what it is.'
'I'm looking forward to returning as quickly as possible and get back to that unique and special feeling that really marks Thistle out as a football club with a passion to be different and an ambition to succeed.'
'It is one that I am very proud to be a part of.'
Club chairman Richard Beastall said: 'It was a harrowing time for Ian and his family immediately after the accident however things are beginning to settle now. He suffered broken bones in both his neck and back but thankfully the speed in which he was operated on, and the care that was taken pre-operation, has helped the situation significantly.'
'Ian has only been at the club for a short time however he has impressed everyone with his professionalism and drive. Everyone at The Wyre Stadium at Firhill wishes Ian a quick and full recovery.'
'We have contingency measures in place to cope with his absence. These include extra duties being carried out by our new Head of Recruitment, Lee Turnbull, who has now officially started, and others at the club. I thank everyone for rallying together.'

He's reporting the 23-year-old has penned a four-year contract at the club, with the option of extending his stay in Glasgow to 2030. It means the Scottish champions have staved off competition from the likes of Anderlecht and Copenhagen to land the attacker's signature. Nygren netted 16 times in 32 games for the Danish outfit Nordsjaelland last season and made his debut for Sweden. He has two goals from four caps for his country, scoring in the 2-0 win over Hungary and 5-1 victory over Northern Ireland in June. He would become Brendan Rodgers' third summer signing after finalising deals to bring Kieran Tierney and Ross Doohan back to the club. Fulham attacker Callum Osmand is also on the verge of joining the Hoops. Meanwhile, Celtic are looking to raid the J-League for another striker. SunSport has exclusively revealed they are watching Kawasaki Frontale hitman Shin Yamada. Major update on Motherwell star Lennon Miller's future as dad Lee says he's got ‘preferred choice' in mind
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) LEE MILLER has revealed son Lennon has his heart set on a move abroad. Both Celtic and Rangers have been credited with an interest in the 18-year-old Motherwell star, who earned a Scotland debut earlier this month after a stellar season at Fir Park. Lee said: 'His preferred choice would be abroad. He's not just going to go to a club for the sake of it. "It needs to have the right environment and the right manager at the right club. 'Lennon's not bothered with the money side of things — he wants to go and progress his career and then kick on again. 'I don't know what that'll be. But it needs to be a place where he can then grow again. 'The next move for Lennon is so important for his development.' The Well starlet will have plenty of options this summer, with English Premier League new boys Sunderland the latest club to be linked with the teen. Italian side Udinese and Belgian cracks Union St-Gilloise had bids rejected in January. While some youngsters are sold on a glamorous name, Lee believes Lennon will make the smart choice when it comes to picking the right club to stay a first team regular. He added: 'There's a lot of interest in Lennon — it's a new club every day! Stuart Kettlewell on Motherwell poster boy Lennon Miller, learning from Old Firm icons and what his Gers-daft family thought when the Fir Park side won at Ibrox 'In terms of bids going in for him, there's nothing this summer. There were a few bids in January and the valuation wasn't met, so we just had to wait. 'It needs to be the right club. For example, it's all right saying Napoli's an incredible club and they've got amazing players. 'But that's when you need to look at where he fits into that club. There needs to be a space that he fits in and is able to flourish and progress. 'Ultimately he needs to play football. He needs to keep developing because everything has gone to plan so far. 'He's played a number of first-team games and is a recognised first-team player now, although still only 18. 'He's done really well at Motherwell, but it's time for him to move on.' Miller Snr admits the speed of his son's rise has taken him by surprise. The former Scotland striker was delighted to see his boy shine in his first two senior appearances for his country earlier this month. 4 Lennon Miller made his Scotland debut last month Credit: Willie Vass He said: 'Lennon really liked his time away with Scotland and I think Scott McTominay took a shine to him. He bounced ideas off of him and played alongside him and Billy. 'Billy and Lennon complemented each other in the second game — although everybody will say it was only Liechtenstein. 'It was a great end to the season, he's rubbing shoulders with the best players in Scotland. 'I get goosebumps talking about it and hopefully he gets that special move that allows him to kick on.' City are willing to take a huge hit on the £100million they paid Aston Villa four years ago. And Grealish, 29, faces a big pay cut as Napoli would pay little more than half of his current £300,000-a-week salary. He will accept that if it gives him a chance of forcing his way back into England boss Thomas Tuchel's World Cup plans. Jack Grealish has gone from eye-catching showman and heartthrob to miserable bench warmer - and I know who's to blame Bournemouth midfielder Philip Billing arrived in January, in a move that could become permanent. City would even sanction a loan switch for Grealish — especially if there is a commitment to buy.
