Limpopo DA lays charges over GNT pension crisis
LIMPOPO – On Monday, May 26, the Democratic Alliance (DA) in Limpopo laid criminal charges against the CEO of Great North Transport (GNT) and the Limpopo Economic Development Agency (LEDA), the sole shareholder of GNT.
The charges, filed at the Polokwane Police Station, relate to the non-payment of employee pension fund and medical aid contributions.
Jacques Smalle, DA Limpopo provincial spokesperson for economic development, environment, and tourism, said LEDA, as the sole shareholder, holds both statutory and fiduciary responsibilities for GNT's financial management.
'The scale of the crisis became clear during an urgent sitting of the Limpopo Portfolio Committee on Economic Development, Environment and Tourism on Friday, May 23,' Smalle explained.
'This meeting, which followed the DA's repeated calls for GNT and LEDA to account, revealed unpaid contributions to three pension schemes totalling R6.78 million and affecting 945 employees. In some cases, employee memberships have already been suspended. If at least R1 million is not paid by the end of May, all memberships could be suspended, potentially resulting in permanent loss of pension benefits.'
Smalle attributed the crisis to 'years of corruption, mismanagement, and lack of accountability' at GNT. He added that the company's failure to implement a viable turnaround strategy further deepened its financial troubles.
'The situation at GNT is dire; it has become an unsustainable entity,' Smalle said. 'The charges laid include theft, fraud, and violations of both the Pension Funds Act and the Medical Schemes Act, all of which are criminal offences.'
In response to the allegations, Mthunzi Dlamini from LEDA acknowledged the outstanding contributions and said efforts were underway to settle the payments within the week.
'GNT has faced ongoing financial constraints in meeting its obligations,' Dlamini said. 'However, strategic steps have recently been taken, including the procurement of new buses to replace the ageing fleet and the launch of a bus lease programme aimed at increasing operational capacity.' LEDA CEO Thakhani Makhuvha said the LEDA is committed to resolving the issue.
'As the shareholder, LEDA has decided to step in and ensure that all outstanding pension and medical contributions are brought up to date,' Makhuvha said. 'We recognise the severity of the situation and apologise to affected employees. This is deeply regrettable.'

Manganese carrier truck driver held for allegedly trying to bribe Eastern Cape traffic officer
The driver of a manganese carrier truck was pulled off on the N10 in the Eastern Cape just outside Cookhouse on Friday, after he allegedly offered a traffic officer a bribe when she pulled him over for driving an unroadworthy vehicle. A young Eastern Cape traffic officer refused an alleged bribe of R1,500 by a manganese truck driver after she pulled the vehicle off the road for being in a dangerous condition. Eastern Cape Department of Transport spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, said the woman who arrested the driver was a young traffic officer recruited only in December last year. He said the truck, which was registered in the Northern Cape, was in a dangerous condition. Binqose confirmed that the truck was a manganese carrier. 'It was deemed a moving hazard with various defects ranging from a loose steering rack, loose wiring in the cabin and tyres that were [in poor] condition,' he said. He said the driver had offered the officer a R1,500 bribe, which she refused. She then proceeded to arrest the driver. Eastern Cape Transport MEC Xolile Nqatha applauded the officer for her 'act of bravery and absolute patriotism', putting public safety over personal gain. He said her actions would save lives. History of crashes 'The N10 road has seen a lot of crashes involving trucks with defects like this one, not only claiming lives, but also resulting in lengthy road closures,' Binqose said. In February 2024, a traffic officer, Sisanda Hadi, was knocked over and killed when she tried to pull over a manganese truck at the Kinkelbos weighbridge on the N2. In September 2023, about 17km before Cookhouse, a manganese carrier crashed into the vehicle of Middelburg businessman Calla Perry, killing him. The number of heavy trucks on the N10 passing Cradock has increased from 5,795 in 2021/22 to an estimated 15,000 trucks in the 2023/2024 financial year, according to information provided by Nqatha to the Eastern Cape Legislature. Manganese is transported by truck from mines in the Northern Cape and exported, mainly through the Port of Port Elizabeth in Gqeberha, where Transnet houses its main export facility for manganese in South Africa. In the past month, there have been at least two serious incidents involving heavy trucks on the N10. Two weeks ago, authorities had to struggle for eight hours to clear the wreckage and reopen the route after the N10 between Cookhouse and Nxuba [Cradock] was closed following a head-on collision involving two trucks. Last year, Nqatha said spot checks along the N10 were part of a road safety strategy. 'Corridor operations are conducted every month in collaboration with Northern Cape, focusing on heavy road freight. Multidisciplinary roadblocks are also conducted each quarter, focusing on heavy trucks. 'Traffic officers are deployed on a daily basis to patrol the N9 and N10, routes the heavy trucks are travelling. Speed measuring is conducted in certain spots on the N9 and N10 routes,' Nqatha said in response to a question in the Eastern Cape Legislature. DM

Standerton Regional Court sentences convicted serial rapist to another 25 years in jail A convicted serial rapist serving more than three life sentences and over 100 years has been sentenced to an additional 25 years in jail. The Standerton Regional Court sentenced Zakhele Isaac Mahlangu (44) for raping a 21-year-old woman on May 7, 2016. The victim was on her way to a hiking spot along the Secunda road (R546) near Charl Cilliers when Mahlangu offered her a lift in a white vehicle at about 14:00. 'The suspect claimed he was heading in the same direction,' said Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane. Along the way Mahlangu diverted onto a gravel road, claiming that he was going to pick up other people on a nearby farm. 'The rapist then tied her up using a seatbelt, forcibly removed her clothing and raped her multiple times without protection, despite her resistance and cries for help,' explained Ndubane. Mahlangu then removed the vehicle's number plates, threw the victim's belongings out of the car and abandoned her in an isolated area. The victim got another lift to Charl Cilliers where she reported the incident and was referred to the Standerton Police Station for further investigation. The police took her to hospital for medical examination. In a dramatic twist of events, the victim later saw the suspect, who was already in jail, being escorted by prison wardens at a hospital,' said Ndubane. 'She immediately alerted the police who acted swiftly to investigate,' added Ndubane.
