SABIC's growth projects progressing as planned: CEO
Saudi Basic Industries Corporation's (SABIC) growth projects are progressing according to plan, according to CEO Abdulrahman Al-Fageeh.
The projects include the Petrokemya Methyl Tertiary-Butyl Ether (MTBE) plant in Jubail and the SABIC Fujian petrochemical complex in China's Fujian province.
Additionally, SABIC commissioned the Ibn Zahr LTRS-1 project, which aims to enhance feedstock utilisation and reduce the carbon footprint, Al-Fageeh said in the company's first quarter 2025 financial statement.
The CEO ruled out tariffs' negative impact on global demand and customer preference for its product portfolio, Aragaam, an Arabic financial portal, reported.

'I work closely with architects, engineers, and sustainability consultants to help shape developments that serve as replicable models for other urban centres in the region and globally,' she said. Alzaabi believes that 'true sustainability starts with climate-responsive design, not just high-tech solutions'.She noted that elements rooted in traditional Emirati architecture, such as natural ventilation, shading, and thick walls, inspired much of the engineering work at Masdar City. 'We use these concepts to reduce energy use by keeping buildings cool without relying heavily on air-conditioning,' Alzaabi said. 'By blending these age-old techniques with modern technology, we create sustainable buildings that respect our heritage while meeting today's environmental goals.'Combining smart technology with passive design can help reduce energy use in buildings to support sustainable urban growth, according to Alzaabi.'Things like advanced building materials, energy modelling, and adaptive shading can make buildings more comfortable and efficient,' she said.'At Masdar City, we're also working on improving cooling systems and creating buildings that produce more energy than they use. These ideas can change how cities are built in hot climates and serve as examples for others to follow.'Alzaabi advises aspiring Emirati women pursuing careers in sustainability engineering to say curious and believe in their ability to make an impact. 'These fields need diverse voices to shape resilient, future-ready cities. Seek out mentors to support you on your journey, embrace learning, and don't be afraid to lead. Sustainability isn't just a goal; it's a mindset, and your perspective is vital to building a better world,' she said. Turning Blueprints Green Aisha Alkindi, Sustainability Manager at Al-Futtaim Real Estate, works on embedding sustainability into the very blueprint of large-scale property developments. 'This starts at the blueprint stage, influencing everything from energy-efficient designs, indoor environment compliances, waste management and water conservation strategies to the selection of sustainable materials and the implementation of robust waste management programmes, ensuring that the implementations are being carried out and sharing the results to all our stakeholders,' she said. 'We're creating places where residents experience a tangible difference - healthier indoor environments, abundant green spaces, and lower utility bills thanks to smart design and technology - across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Egypt.' Balancing green goals with the fast pace of development in the UAE requires a strategic and integrated approach, according to Alkindi.'We achieve this by integrating sustainability directly into our business strategy. We began by conducting comprehensive baseline assessments through various sustainability audits, allowing us to tailor our strategies accordingly,' she said. 'This approach includes investing in advanced green building technologies, optimising designs for passive cooling and natural lighting, and exploring renewable energy solutions that are both environmentally sustainable and economically feasible.'Sustainable practices not only benefit the environment; they enhance property value, reduce operational costs, and align with the evolving expectations of customers and regulators, she noted. Alkindi believes that economic progress must go hand in hand with environmental stewardship. TRENDS hosts symposium exploring prospects for China-Middle East relations
20 June 2025 10:45 ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD) TRENDS Research & Advisory, through its Virtual Office in China, kicked off its participation in the 31st edition of the Beijing International Book Fair 2025 by organising a research symposium titled 'Prospects for China–Middle East Relations in Light of Global Transformations', held at the centre's booth at the China National Convention in the seminar—moderated by Farida Bai Yi Nan, Head of the Arabic Language Department at China Today magazine—discussed the role of the Belt and Road Initiative in enhancing Arab–Chinese economic integration, the opportunities and domains of cultural and educational cooperation between China and Arab countries, China's position on key Middle Eastern issues, and how Chinese intellectual elites perceive partnerships with Gulf and Arab Jiyuan, a researcher at the Centre for Arab Studies at Zhejiang International Studies University, emphasised that cultural cooperation is a vital component in China–Arab relations. She noted that the exchange of knowledge and culture between China and Arab nations has reached a solid level. For example, over 48 universities in China teach the Arabic language, and enthusiasm for learning Chinese is rising across the Arab world. The UAE and Saudi Arabia have both incorporated Chinese into their national education curricula, and there are currently more than 20 Confucius Institutes across the Middle Al Shehhi, Senior Researcher and Deputy Head of the Scientific Research Sector at TRENDS, stated that China–Arab relations represent a unique model of civilisational interaction, merging the authenticity of tradition with future aspirations for prosperity. What unites Arab nations and China, he said, is a shared vision for a prosperous future that does not come at the expense of history or cultural Shehhi added that recent years have witnessed significant developments in bilateral relations—not only in trade but also in deep cultural and educational cooperation, which serves as the cornerstone of building bridges of mutual understanding between pointed out that it is impossible to speak of Sino–Arab cooperation without mentioning the UAE model, as the UAE is not only China's top trading partner in the Middle East and North Africa, but also the most advanced in cultural collaboration. The UAE has announced investments totaling $10 billion in joint cultural and educational projects with China over the next ten Yuxin, a researcher at the Institute of African Studies at Zhejiang Normal University, explained that both the UAE and China are committed to playing positive roles in achieving peace and defusing regional and global conflicts—especially in the Middle East, a region of central importance to the entire world. Yang added that China is the top trading partner of the UAE, while the UAE is the largest market for Chinese exports and a key investment destination for China in the Middle East. In recent years, cooperation in renewable energy, photovoltaic power plants, and wind energy has witnessed significant growth. The UAE is also the primary destination for Chinese tourists in the region, with more than one million tourists last year, alongside over 100 Chinese schools in the UAE—further enhancing educational and cultural exchange.
