There's a quality experts deem a 'must' in a long-term partner - but hardly anyone guesses it correctly

Think kindness matters most in a relationship? Or maybe loyalty, or shared interests? According to two of the world's top mental health experts, you're missing the mark.
In an episode of SOLVED, a podcast hosted by bestselling author Mark Manson, psychotherapist and writer Lori Gottlieb revealed that the real secret to a healthy, lasting relationship is something few people ever consider: flexibility.
'The number one quality that predicts whether somebody is going to be a good partner is flexibility,' Gottlieb said.
'You don't want to be with a rigid partner. And what the mental health stuff out there is saying is be really, really rigid. Be super boundaried. You can't be rigid if you want to have relationships.'
It's a provocative claim in today's social media landscape, where wellness influencers and pop psychologists often encourage people to prioritise themselves, even if that means cutting off friends, family, or partners at the first sign of conflict.
But Manson, who has built a global following by challenging self-help clichés, agreed that modern conversations around mental health and 'boundaries' have become a little too strict.
Citing writer Oliver Burkeman, Manson said, 'The friction is the point.'
He explained that it's not just tolerating each other's quirks and bad habits that builds intimacy - it's often those very traits that form the foundation of deep connection.
'There's a psychologist named Robert Glover and he said: 'We fall in love with people's rough edges'.
'If our expectations of people, both in friendships and romantic relationships, become too inflated, then we're not willing to tolerate any sort of inconvenience or discomfort. And we rob ourselves of the chance of intimacy,' Manson said.
Listeners were quick to relate.
One person wrote: 'The internet is obsessed with boundaries. Healthy relationships are not about putting yourself first every second.'
Another added: 'My ex was the least flexible person I knew. Makes sense it didn't work.'
Others said they'd experienced the opposite - being too flexible for too long with the wrong people.
'People shouting boundaries from the rooftops are people who have been flexible at the expense of themselves with a partner who didn't care about them,' a commenter shared.
Ultimately, the conversation wasn't anti-boundary - it was about balance.
As one listener put it: 'We grew up with Boomers who didn't know what the word boundary was. Now we live and die by our boundaries, probably too much so. I'm excited for our children to find the balance.'
Or, as another summed up: 'Boundaries aren't synonymous with rigidity. But there is beauty in the growth through friction.'
So next time you're thinking about whether someone is 'relationship material,' you might want to look past the dating app profiles and dinner-table charm - and ask yourself: are they capable of being flexible when it matters?
Because according to the experts, that's what really lasts.

Jack Vidgen appears in good health as he attends church service with his mother after seventh stint in rehab

Jack Vidgen is on the mend after a recent stint in rehab. The troubled former Australia's Got Talent star stepped out on Sunday for a visit to a local Sydney church with his mum. The pop singer was joined by mother Rachel Hayton, with the pair enjoying a coffee and a walk after the service. Jack appeared in good health and good spirits as he strolled along sipping from a takeaway cup and puffing on a vape. He kept warm in a crisp white hoodie paired with pale blue track pants and a pair of sneakers. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Jack completed his look with a pair of sunglasses and chatted happily to his mum, who brought her dog along for the walk. He had earlier sat down at a local cafe with his mum and enjoyed a spirit conversation that left him smiling. It comes after Jack shared a heartbreaking 'belated' Mother's Day message to his mum ahead of his seventh visit to rehab. The 28-year-old, who announced earlier this year that he was once again battling addiction in a rehab centre after a recent relapse, shared the sweet post for his followers. He included a selfie, in which his adoring mother can be seen embracing him on a park bench. Jack said it was a 'late' Mother's Day post, explaining he didn't get to see his mum for the big day earlier that month. He also confessed that when the picture was taken his mother had travelled to see him and asked him to get him professional help for his addiction battle, but he refused. 'I took this pic of mum and I on the 16th April, last month. It was right in the middle of my relapse,' he continued. 'She'd driven from down from the coast, where she lives, in hopes we would have coffee and that I would come back with her and maybe check in to rehab. 'I saw how much it broke her heart as I told her I had no plans of getting sober and that I wouldn't be coming back with her. 'I know that being the person with the addiction is hard, but being a family member, I think especially a parent of someone who goes through addiction, would be so painful and would leave you feeling helpless. 'Mum, you are an absolute angel and warrior. You've been through so much yourself and you've loved and supported me through this battle with such compassion yet also giving me tough love when I've needed it. 'You're an incredible woman and are so loved by so many, I hope you know that.' He signed off the message 'Bestest mum in the whole wide world' and added two kisses. Jack earlier posted to social media with a tearful message to share the sad news that he had returned to a rehabilitation centre for the seventh time. The singer explained he recently suffered a relapse and was once again fighting addiction. 'Hi, this is not the video I was hoping to make five months down the track after [not] posting anything on Instagram,' Jack said. Choking back sobs, Jack detailed his recent experience. 'I relapsed, that was two months ago,' he said. 'Just like that - I feel like I've let a lot of people down and I wasn't going to talk about it again, because half of me is like "Oh shut up Jack, no one wants to hear it."' Jack also revealed he made a police 'report' over an unspecified matter that has led him to 'feeling scared'. 'But I just feel like I need to tell someone that I have a situation coming up in a couple of months...' he continued. 'I just feel think I'm just really scared. I've been really scared for so many years.' He signed off by telling followers he was not 'doing okay' but he would be 'okay'. Jack, who has often taken to social media over the years to share his addiction troubles, also posted a lengthy caption for the video. He signed off by telling followers he was not 'doing okay' but he would be 'okay' 'I made a police report five years ago and it's just been lingering like this dark cloud over my life for so long and I just want it to be over and I think I just wanted to do a reach out,' he said. 'If you're a victim you understand. If you're a victim through addiction you'd understand even more. 'It's just been really hard and i don't know I just want to talk about it because I want to talk about it with people but they don't get it. 'Anyway the point of this video was just to check in and say hello and just let you know that i'm not doing okay but I will be doing okay.' Elsewhere in the post Jack said: 'I'm scared for the future. As I mentioned I have a situation coming up in the next couple months that's been lingering for the last 5 years. Something that I wouldn't wish upon my worst enemy. I've been so terrified but it's time I step into my strength and my truth. 'As a victim of sexual abuse I will get through this. Alive. I love you all. Jack x.' The performer rose to fame after winning the fifth season of Australia's Got Talent in 2011. After bowing out of the spotlight for a few years, he returned to prominence in 2019 as a contestant on The Voice. He made it all the way to the semi-finals before being eliminated.

Sophie Turner 'reconciles romance' with aristocrat Peregrine Pearson as pair enjoy cosy lunch date after reconnecting on social media

Sophie Turner appears to have rekindled her romance with aristocrat Peregrine Pearson - two months after sparking split rumours. The actress, 29, was revealed to be dating Viscount Cowdray's son, 30, in December 2023, after the breakdown of her four-year marriage to Joe Jonas. Yet, the pair were said to have gone their separate ways in April, unfollowing each other on social media and Sophie allegedly telling friends she was 'single'. However, the pair seemed to have put their differences aside as they were spotted on a lunch date in London on Thursday. Sophie kept cool in the heatwave as she went braless in a skimpy grey crop top that she paired with black denim hot pants. The mother-of-two completed her look with shades and flip flops as she strode along behind Peregrine, who also looked casual in a T-shirt and chinos. As well as being spotted out together, the pair have also reconnected on social media, with Sophie following Peregrine on Instagram on once more. Sophie's representatives declined to comment. MailOnline has contacted Peregrine's team. In April, Sophie is said to have been telling friends that she was 'single'. A source told The Sun: 'Sophie and Peregrine had a great time together but the relationship ran its course. She is single and is focusing on her career and her two daughters.' Her alleged comments came after she unfollowed him on Instagram. It was unclear whether he still followed her page because he has a private platform. The couple have documented their relationship online, with Sophie last sharing pictures of Peregrine - known as Perry - in a post from January. In a round up for the year, Sophie included several snaps of Perry, including one loved-up photo where she was wrapped around him taken in a bathroom mirror. However, Perry's presence on her page has been less visible since, with Sophie not including him in a post from a Paris trip in March he was on with the Game Of Thrones star and her friends. Before their lunch date last week, Sophie and Perry were last pictured together at the Louis Vuitton show on March 10 before having dinner at Siena in the French capital. While the couple appeared to have hit a rocky patch, it was only the end of last year that it was reported that Sophie could see herself having children with him. In November, it was claimed he would 'love to have children' with Perry in the future, according to sources who revealed the actress believed he could be 'the one'. Insiders revealed that while Sophie is not planning to have children with Perry anytime soon - she does see them welcoming a child together in the coming years. The insider stated: 'Sophie is open to having kids one day even though that is not on the slate for right now. 'She is in love with Peregrine, and she knows that he wants to be a father one day as this is discussed with couples. 'She loves her kids very much and is a great mom. She puts her children first which Peregrine admires her for.' The Do Revenge actress was famously married to Joe Jonas and the pair share two children, daughters Willa, four, and Delphine, two. Sophie and Joe began dating in 2016, got engaged in October 2017 and got married on May 1, 2019 in Las Vegas before splitting in September 2023. The former couple finalized their divorce in September 2024, a little over a year after the Jonas Brothers star filed for separation. As Sophie continued to move on from the failed marriage, another source dished at the time that she could see herself settling down with Peregrine. 'Sophie wants her happy ever after. Joe wasn't it,' the source explained. 'Peregrine seems to be the one and she would love to have children with him one day and the likelihood of that happening is pretty good. They will certainly try.' Noting that the Joan actress was putting her time and focus on her children and her career, the source continued: 'But right now, she has some career opportunities to pursue along with being a mom already, she wants to enjoy the relationship with Peregrine and what they can build before they add anything more to it. 'Everything is going as well as it can go, she is happy, relieved to have a partner she is in love with and has no issues with.' The source made it clear that the future is looking bright Sophie as they continued: 'Her life is pretty amazing right now and adding a child would add to the amazingness of it all, but don't expect a nursery to be built in the near future. 'They have other personal goals and relationship goals to reach before that happens.' Sophie and Peregrine confirmed their relationship last December after it was revealed last September that Sophie and Joe had filed for divorce. Peregrine is the eldest son and heir of Michael Pearson, the 4th Viscount Cowdray – a former film producer who owns a significant chunk of the Pearson media empire. While Sophie is said to be worth $10million, this pales in comparison to Peregrine's family fortune which is said to be more than $224million. He has a $5million pad in Chelsea while his father owns a sprawling mansion in West Sussex with 22 bedrooms and 16,500 acres of grounds. His ancestral estate is home to Cowdray Park Polo Club – which boasts ten pitches and hosts more than 450 matches each year. The prestigious club hosts the annual Gold Cup, where both Prince William and Prince Harry have played. Last month, Sophie shocked fans when she showed her support for ex Joe following their acrimonious divorce. The Game of Thrones actress, shared an image of his new album, Music for People Who Believe in Love, on her Instagram Stories. She captioned it, 'Go go @joejonas.' The album officially dropped on Friday, May 23.

Only four children came to my son's third birthday party... all because the other mothers don't like me - and this is the terrible reason why

The hall we'd hired was full of toys and balloon animals, the bubble machine and soft play all set up. The night before, I'd stayed up to finish the party bags, pass-the-parcel and home-made pinata. Everything was ready for my son Magnus's third birthday. The kindest, sweetest little boy who loves Spider-Man, Fireman Sam, dinosaurs and for me to read to him at bedtime.
