The Dodgers won five of the seven games and are playing great baseball right now. The Padres, on the other hand, have been in a slump. Both teams are dealing with a ton of injuries. The fact that both teams felt like plunking opposing players is questionable; however, these two teams are rivals and do not like each other. Foul Territory is a baseball podcast that features former MLB players, Erik Kratz and A.J. Pierzynski, and Scott Braun and Ken Rosenthal also join. They discussed the drama, and Kratz supports what Shildt did. The Padres are tired of teams throwing at Fernando Tatis Jr. LA hit him three times during the series and even hit him last week, not to mention multiple times in the past. As the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres managers in Dave Roberts and Mike Shildt, went at it on Thursday night after players were pelted, the rivalry no doubt has reached new heights. With the Padres' skipper having a rant at the Dodgers about hitting their players, Roberts would speak about the incident that took place. Advertisement While it wasn't the first time, star Fernando Tatis Jr. would be hit by a pitch in the top of the ninth inning, which led to Shildt approaching the mound to check on his player, but also walked towards Roberts and the Los Angeles dugout. Shildt took issue with the team, as this led to Roberts approaching him, giving him a light shove as the dugouts were cleared. Roberts would give insight into why Shildt confronting him 'bothers' the manager, according to ESPN. 'Obviously,' Roberts said, 'I think anyone knows there was no intent.' 'And so as [Shildt] comes out, and he's yelling at me and staring me down, that bothers me,' Roberts continued. 'Because, to be quite frank, that's the last thing I wanted. I'm taking starters out of the game, trying to get this game over with and get this kid a couple innings. I took that personal. Because I understand the game, and I understand that it doesn't feel good to get hit.' However, he would be seen waving off his teammates to prevent any further confrontation. 'We got a guy who's getting X-rays right now, is one of the best players in the game, fortunately on our team, and this guy has taken shots, OK?' Shildt said. 'And before this series, and I can back this up with complete evidence, the track records speak for themselves — teams that I manage don't get into altercations like this because teams that I manage don't throw at people. But also, teams I manage don't take anything.' 'And after a while, I'm not going to take it,' Shildt continued. 'And I'm not going to take it on behalf of Tati, I'm not going to take it on behalf of the team, intentional or unintentional. It's really that simple. That's how this game is played. Following a tension-filled series, the Los Angeles Dodgers (46-30) and San Diego Padres (40-34) finally succumbed to their emotions on Thursday night. And now come the consequences. MLB is suspending managers Dave Roberts and Mike Shildt and Padres closer Robert Suarez, per ESPN's Alden Gonzalez. Advertisement All three men were ejected in the last game on Thursday. Roberts and Shildt will each serve a one-game suspension on Friday and pay a fine, while Suarez is getting slapped with a three-game suspension. He is appealing the decision. Considering that the 2024 All-Star hit Shohei Ohtani in the back a half-inning after Dodgers rookie Jack Little stuck Fernando Tatis Jr. in the left hand, it is hard to see the league's decision getting overturned. There is not a person watching that game who is going to believe that Suarez's intentions were pure. There are plenty of people who think the Venezuelan right-hander and Padres were within their right to take action after Tatis was pelted once again in the series. But LA will argue that San Diego put Andy Pages' health at risk as well and crossed the line by making an example out of the reigning MVP. Both sides are frustrated and feel their players are not being properly protected. Dodgers and Padres will try to move forward Perhaps these suspensions will force each team to exercise caution when they next square off on Aug. 15. Dave Roberts and Mike Shildt could try to set the tone and ensure that the focus remains on baseball when that date arrives. The two former National League Manager of the Year winners will have to find common ground first, though. Advertisement Shildt directed his fury at Roberts after Tatis was drilled by the now minor-league bound Jack Little. In turn, Roberts came blazing out of the dugout and shoved his fellow skipper. They could both use a day to emotionally reset. Robert Suarez is not willing to take his punishment lying down, however. He will be available until MLB hands down a final ruling on his appeal. The Dodgers wrap up their 10-game homestand against the visiting Washington Nationals (31-44), while the Padres welcome in the Kansas City Royals (37-38). Both clubs should have plenty of steam to blow off this weekend.
