Qatar University (QU) has announced the names of the awardees of the QU Humanities and Social Sciences research (QUHSS) grants for the year 2025 during a scientific gathering organized by the university, attended by a distinguished group of researchers and academics.
This announcement comes as part of the university's commitment to supporting scientific research in areas that directly impact Qatari society and contribute to public policy development and sustainable development. In his speech on the occasion, Dr. Omar Al-Ansari, president of QU, expressed his pleasure at launching this pioneering research program, noting the special importance that QU places on the humanities and social sciences.
He stated, 'I am pleased to welcome you today to this distinguished scientific meeting, where we announce the names of the awardees of the Humanities and Social Sciences Grants for the year 2025, as part of the pioneering initiative launched by QU to support and advance the humanities and social sciences. QU has paid special attention to these sciences, believing that they represent a cornerstone in building a comprehensive knowledge-based society.'
Dr. Al-Ansari further emphasized that these grants reflect the university's orientation toward empowering interdisciplinary research teams, stating, 'Through this program, we aim to enhance academic performance, achieve excellence in research, education, and community service, address societal challenges, nurture talent, build capacities, and actively contribute to shaping effective policies that support decision-makers.'
Dr. Al-Ansari concluded his speech with an open invitation to all researchers: 'I invite everyone to seize this opportunity to produce high-quality, impactful research outputs and to actively participate in the Annual Humanities and Social Sciences Forum and all related activities.'
This year's winning projects included distinguished studies on critical topics such as integrating national identity into educational curricula, empowering Qatari women in both public and private sectors, preserving national cultural heritage, enhancing financial literacy among youth, and the role of the family in social stability.
This year will also witness the launch of the second cycle of the Interdisciplinary Collaborative Research Grants Program, within an enhanced framework aligned with the university's strategic directions and aimed at strengthening its position as a leading academic institution both locally and regionally. There will be an Annual Humanities and Social Sciences Forum that will also be held as a central platform for fostering collaboration, dialogue among researchers, sharing experiences, and expanding academic networks.
Emphasizing the continuity of this research approach, Dr. Al-Ansari noted, 'This path will continue in the second cycle of the Interdisciplinary Collaborative Research Grants Program, which is part of the internal grants and is set to launch its ninth cycle tomorrow, within an improved and enhanced framework that reflects the strategic directions and research aspirations of the University.'
In his remarks, Prof. Aiman Erbad, vice president for Research and Graduate Studies at QU, highlighted the university's research priorities for the 2025–2030 period, stating, 'As part of its firm commitment to supporting the national research ecosystem, QU has outlined its research priorities for the period 2025–2030 in alignment with the strategic directions of the state. These priorities cover key areas such as health, resource sustainability, digital technology, society, and energy—reflecting the university's central role in addressing national challenges and fostering innovation.'
He also emphasized QU's dedication to building research capacity through a diverse portfolio of internal research grants. These include Capacity Building Grants, Collaborative Grants, Institutional Collaboration Grants, Government and Industry Collaboration Grants, the Innovation and Knowledge Transfer Grant, Interdisciplinary and Collaborative Research Grants, Postdoctoral Researcher Grants, Student Research Grants, and the Interdisciplinary Collaborative Humanities and Social Sciences Grant. These initiatives play a vital role in preparing competent researchers who contribute to achieving Qatar National Vision.
Dr. Saeed Al-Meer, director of Research Support (Grants and Contracts), honoured the awardees. The winners of the Humanities and Social Sciences Grants were Dr. Turki Obaid Al-Marri, assistant professor ofFiqh and Usul Al-Fiqh, College of Sharia and Islamic Studies; Dr. Shaikha Al-Kuwari, assistant professor of Sociology, College of Arts and Sciences; Dr. Israa Al-Muftah, assistant professor of Educational Sciences, College of Education; Dr. Hamad Al-Ghadeed, assistant professor of History, College of Arts and Sciences; and Dr. Amna Sadiq, assistant professor of Gulf Studies, College of Arts and Sciences.

Aspiring scientists sharpen their skills at WCM-Q biomedical training programme
Tribune News Network Doha Four aspiring biomedical scientists have gained key research skills by completing the 2025 cycle of Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar's (WCM-Q) Biomedical Research Training Programme (BRTP) for nationals. The interns who participated in this year's programme are Raghad Rabie El Ghali, Hadeel Alashwal, Maryam Ali, and Sara Muhamed Saleh. The programme is designed to give Qatari nationals and long-term residents who have recently graduated from college a firm foundation in practical laboratory and research administration skills, and experience conducting real clinical research projects while working alongside WCM-Q's highly qualified scientific faculty in the college's state-of-the-art laboratories. To celebrate their successful completion of the programme, the interns were presented with certificates at a special graduation ceremony. This year marks the 13th annual cycle of the Biomedical Research Training Programme for Nationals, which was launched in 2011. To date, the programme has helped 62 graduates, including this year's cohort, take their first steps toward successful careers in research. Dr Khaled Machaca, professor of physiology and biophysics/senior associate dean for research, innovations, and commercialization at WCM-Q, said: 'I am honoured to congratulate our latest cohort of talented graduates from the Biomedical Research Training Programme. These impressive young scientists have dedicated the last 10 months to acquiring the skills and knowledge needed to become not only exceptional scientists but also vital contributors to Qatar's thriving biomedical research sector. I wish them every success in the next stages of their careers.' This year's BRTP interns are graduates of Hamad Bin Khalifa University, Qatar University, the University of Zhengzhou in China, and the International Medical University in Malaysia. Tembela Eweje, associate director, grants, contracts and research training, said: 'This programme is more than just training; it's about building a diverse and capable biomedical workforce for Qatar. The programme is designed to equip emerging scientists with critical skills and provide the mentorship they need for their careers after completion. During the graduation ceremony, our trainees expressed their excitement about the future and their eagerness to engage in activities that will help them gain the expertise needed to lead transformative research. One trainee mentioned that the program provided them with what they would equate to about 10 years of experience in just 10 months.' The programme has become an established bridge for college graduates to transition to the workplace and kickstart successful careers in research. Graduates from previous cycles have gone on to publish in leading journals and have been accepted to graduate school programmes in Qatar and abroad, while others have established careers in research at prestigious institutions across Qatar and the region.

QSE hails innovation support law as historic step to empower creators, researchers
QNA Doha The Qatar Society of Engineers (QSE) affirmed that the novel law supporting innovation and scientific research represents a qualitative leap and an important strategic platform for opening up broad horizons for innovators and researchers in various sectors, particularly engineering and technology, which represent the backbone of modern development in Qatar. In a statement yesterday, the society expressed its appreciation and gratitude to HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, for the issuance of Law No. (8) of 2025 regarding supporting of innovation and scientific research, and Amiri Decision No. (19) of 2025 establishing the Qatar Foundation for Supporting Innovation, Scientific Research. Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the QSE Eng. Amna Mohammed Al Naama, indicated that this initiative reflects the insightful vision of the Qatari leadership to build a sustainable national economy based on knowledge and innovation. She emphasized that the new foundation will be a key catalyst for unleashing latent potential and encouraging creative ideas, contributing to addressing local and global challenges and strengthening Qatar's position as a leading regional center for research and development. It affirmed its aspiration to establish a strong and effective governance system for the institution.

Qatar takes part in Chileforum to share views on educational innovation
Tribune News Network Doha In a bid to deepen international dialogue on the future of education, representatives from Qatar participated in a high-level forum on 'Reimagining Education: New Paths for Educational Innovation', hosted by Fundación Reimagina in Santiago, Chile. The event, held as part of the Qatar-Chile 2025 Year of Culture (YoC), brought together educators, policymakers, and innovators to explore new models for educational reform and cross-sector collaboration. 'Promoting collaboration between organisations, countries and sectors is a core value of Fundacion Reimagina. In order to fulfil our mission of ensuring education that responds to the challenges of 21st-century society, we require partnerships and exchanges that guarantee higher educational quality and the development of key skills, such as creativity, critical thinking and digital proficiency. This requires a profound and practical approach to innovation, which we aim to promote at this meeting with Years of Culture and WISE,' said Ana María Raad, founder of Reimagina and AprendoLAB. The forum featured contributions from Aurelio Amaral, director of programmes at the World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE), an initiative of Qatar Foundation, and Hazem Idriss, deputy director of community development at Qatar Museums. Their presence underscored Qatar's growing role in fostering education and cultural diplomacy as tools for building bridges across continents. A recent example of this commitment is AprendoLab, a project by Fundación Reimagina that was named one of the six 2024–25 WISE Prize for Education Finalists. The finalists have been working over the past year to develop solutions for fundamental challenges in education systems, such as accelerating foundational literacies, improving the teaching and learning of Arabic, and addressing emerging challenges of artificial intelligence in education. AprendoLab, headquartered in Chile, supports stronger teacher-student engagement through digital resources designed to close educational and technological gaps. Currently being piloted in Chile, Mexico and Ecuador, the project focuses on enhancing both teacher capacity and student learning outcomes. 'Innovation in education requires a systems-thinking approach—one that values grassroots ideas and connects them with global frameworks,' said Amaral on the sidelines of the forum. 'Events like this are essential for bringing diverse voices together to co-create inclusive, resilient learning ecosystems.' Amaral also highlighted WISE's global role in advancing education through research, policy dialogue, and cross-sector partnerships. Since its founding in 2009 by, WISE has become a global platform for educational transformation. Idriss's participation in the forum coincided with a broader visit to Chile and Argentina, where he is conducting site assessments for Qatar Museums' international volunteer programme, an initiative that became an integral part of annual Years of Culture programming during the Qatar-Indonesia 2023. The programme pairs Qatari and Qatar-based students, artists, and staff with local communities in host countries to promote experiential learning and skill exchange.
