Chiefs DL Chris Jones applauds Trey Smith's minicamp appearance: 'Doing the right thing'
During his press conference on Tuesday, Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman Chris Jones expressed his appreciation for teammate Trey Smith's attendance at mandatory minicamp during contract negotiations.
"He's in a good place, staying healthy, ready to compete. Training camp, which I know Trey (Smith) will be at, and we're excited to have him around," said Jones, "I think the future plans for the Chiefs are to have Trey around. He's a pivotal part of our offensive line. He's a superior guard in this league. Could be an All-Pro this year. His body of work speaks for itself. So, we're glad to have him back out."
Smith was drafted in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft and has emerged as one of the best offensive linemen in the league. There was a concern that he could famously take Jones' past approach and hold out during negotiations.
"It's good that Trey didn't take my approach; Trey is doing the right thing. Don't take no advice from me." Said Jones, "I did things a little different; don't take no advice from me. Trey, you're in a good place. The franchise tag is like $25 million, right? That's the big bucks."
The two-time Super Bowl champion was one of two players to receive the franchise tag in the NFL this offseason. The one-year short-term agreement is for $23.4 million and is fully guaranteed for 2025.

This is about being able to get some good quality time with each other and then being able to use the platform that we're blessed with to be able to get back to a community that went through some similar things that we can all understand and kind of empathize with, and you see how excited they are to see our players and that's fun.' There was a time when summer practices in the NFL were brutal, and coaches were taskmasters. McVay represents a new generation of coaches who see the summer as a time to build camaraderie and make sure players are taking care of their bodies so they're healthy when the season starts. That buys him plenty of goodwill with his players.

He made it clear first and foremost just how proud he is of the young signal caller. "I'm proud of Arch," Manning said. "He went to Texas because that's where he wanted to go. He wanted to go to school there. That was the reason I went to Tennessee." Manning continued on to talk about what makes the Longhorns such a good football program. "It's more than just the football program," he said. "You like going to school there. You like the head coach who also calls the plays, and that creates great continuity. To me, the Kyle Shanahans, the Sean McVays – when the head coach is calling the plays – the quarterback is going to thrive in the same system every single year." He then transitioned into talking about the younger Manning's upcoming year. "The fact that this will be Arch's third year in that system, he'll have great knowledge of the system – still hasn't had on-the-field game reps as I'm sure he would have liked, but those will come this year," Manning said. "There will be things for him to learn, but I'm proud of him for his commitment and I'm looking forward to watching him play." No two NFL stars are the same though many share recognizable qualities and common ideas. It doesn't matter if they play for the New York Giants or someone else. All want to get paid. All hope they'll one day be remembered among the greats when their playing days are over. The 'alphas' often think about their legacy. How will they be remembered? Have they set their family up for financial success? How many more years of pain can they squeeze out of those weary and battered bodies? Come to think of it, these guys may be more alike in their makeup than most may have thought. The Giants are snubbed from ESPN's All Quarter Century Team (minus a practice team addition) It's hard to argue with the brilliance and creativity. ESPN dropped some quality content as Aaron Schatz and Seth Wilder cooked up one heck of a write-up in their NFL All Quarter Century team. There's only one problem. There are no New York Giants on the roster! That is, unless you include Michael Strahan's mention as a practice squad member. Okay, so it's been a rough go these past few seasons with Brian Daboll at the helm despite the postseason appearance his team produced in his first season as head coach. Truth be told, we can probably chalk that up to some bad moves by Joe Schoen and the front office. Sure, this team has been bad or mediocre more often than they have impressed us over the past quarter century, but this team has had some talent. What about Michael Strahan? Can we at least bump him up to the active roster? What about Eli Manning? He's 2-0 vs. the QB1, Tom Brady, on the Super Bowl stage. No one wants Eli on the squad, huh? Well, goodness gracious. It will take another 25 years to get there, but at this point, Giants fans and the media have to hope for something.
