11 Actors Who Took Breaks From Hollywood And Why
Whether it's to focus on their personal lives or because they're incredibly burnt out, it's not uncommon for celebrities to take hiatuses from Hollywood. Here's a look at 11 actors' reasons for temporarily stepping back from the big screen:
1. Tom Holland took a year off from acting after his role in the series The Crowded Room took a huge toll on his mental health. 'I really enjoyed it, but then again, the show did break me… I'm now taking a year off, and that is a result of how difficult this show was,' he shared in 2023.
2. Post-Titanic, Leonardo DiCaprio took a break for a couple of years to escape the 'intense' public attention he was receiving. 'It was a very surreal time period. It was bizarre. I took a break for a couple of years because it was so intense. I needed to recharge and refocus,' he recalled in 2016.
3. In 2021, Jennifer Lawrence recalled stepping back from the spotlight after feeling like the public had gotten 'sick' of her. 'I just think everybody had gotten sick of me. I'd gotten sick of me. It had just gotten to a point where I couldn't do anything right,' she said.
4. Rachel McAdams took a 2-year break from acting in the 2000s after starring in a string of super successful films, like Mean Girls and The Notebook. 'I felt guilty for not capitalizing on the opportunity that I was being given, because I knew I was in such a lucky spot. But I also knew it wasn't quite jiving with my personality and what I needed to stay sane,' she shared.
5. In 2022, Sandra Bullock revealed that she was 'going to not spend time in front of the camera for a while' due to feeling 'so burnt out' and exhausted. 'I don't want to be beholden to anyone's schedule other than my own. I'm so burnt out. I'm so tired, and I'm so not capable of making healthy, smart decisions, and I know it,' she said.
6. Brendan Fraser stepped away from the spotlight after experiencing sexual assault in 2003 by the former president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association Phillip W. Berk. The HFPA found that Berk 'inappropriately touched' Brendan but it was "intended to be taken as a joke and not as a sexual advance." Brendan eventually made his comeback in the 2022 film The Whale, which landed him a Best Actor Oscar nomination.
7. Cameron Diaz took a 10-year hiatus from acting, focusing on her personal life. After marrying Good Charlotte singer Benji Madden in 2015 and becoming a mom of two, Cameron eventually made her return to screens, starring in the 2025 Netflix film Back in Action.
8. A few years ago, Emma Watson recalled taking a long break from the industry after she began feeling 'caged' and limited. Admitting that she 'wasn't very happy,' Emma explained, 'I think I felt a bit caged. The thing I found really hard was that I had to go out and sell something that I really didn't have very much control over. To stand in front of a film and have every journalist be able to say, 'How does this align with your viewpoint?' It was very difficult to have to be the face and the spokesperson for things where I didn't get to be involved in the process.'
9. In 2022, Chris Hemsworth revealed he was taking a break from acting after discovering that he had a genetic predisposition to Alzheimer's disease. 'I'm going home, and I'm going to have a good chunk of time off and just simplify. Be with the kids, be with my wife,' he said, later adding, 'I wanted to take off because I've been working for 10 years, and I've got three kids that I want to spend more time with.'
10. Matthew McConaughey once stepped away from the spotlight after feeling like he was being typecast in Hollywood and therefore struggling to bag the roles he wanted. After a 2-year hiatus, he eventually made his return in films like Dallas Buyers Club and The Wolf of Wall Street.
11. In 2023, Emily Blunt revealed she was taking a year off from acting to spend more meaningful time with her children. 'This year, I'm not working. I worked quite a bit last year and my oldest baby is 9, so we're in the last year of single digits,' she said.
12. Josh Hartnett — who was literally everywhere from the late 90s to mid 00s — stepped away from the limelight after finding his immense fame 'overwhelming.' He shared in 2021, 'I really enjoy making films, but the industry itself was overwhelming for a 21-year-old kid. The press was a little bit different back then; there was paparazzi around every corner — you couldn't really go anywhere without being sort of harassed.'
13. And finally, Daniel Kaluuya revealed that he took a break from acting for a year and a half after feeling 'disillusioned' by the lack of jobs he was being offered due to racism. 'I checked out, because I was just like, this isn't working. I wasn't getting roles, because racism and all this kind of stuff—so [Jordan Peele] reaching out was like, 'Okay, I'm not crazy. It's proper. It's going to be all right,'' he shared during an interview with Essence.

Jon Bernthal To Return As The Punisher In 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day'
One of the great things about Marvel Studios and Sony working together is that it allows the live-action Spider-Man franchise to incorporate other beloved Marvel characters outside of Sony's Spider-Man rights. As such, it's been announced that Punisher actor Jon Bernthal will reprise his role for the upcoming MCU project Spider-Man: Brand New Day . The new film will be the fourth live-action solo Spider-Man film set in the MCU, all of which have starred Tom Holland as the titular webslinger. Now it looks like Holland will be working alongside Bernthal who played the Punisher in both Daredevil shows, his own spin-off series, and an upcoming Punisher special for Disney Plus in addition to other MCU appearances. We previously reported back in 2021 that Marvel Studios was interested in having Jon Bernthal appear in a Spider-Man film, and not only that, but that they wanted Bernthal to return in a solo project as well. This does line up with the new announcement, as shared via THR, which confirms Bernthal is returning in the newest Spider-Man entry: 'Bernthal has joined Tom Holland in Spider-Man: Brand New Day , the latest Spider-Man movie from Sony and Marvel. Destin Daniel Cretton is directing the feature, which will shoot in England this summer.' In addition to Holland and Bernthal, the film will also feature MCU stars Zendaya and Jacob Batalon, in addition to newcomer Sadie Sink in an unknown role. Many details regarding the projects are being kept under wraps, including what other characters or plot details fans will get to expect, but hopefully more information will be shared in the near future. Especially now that we know The Punisher will somehow be involved. Fans will be able to see Spider-Man: Brand New Day when it hits theaters next year on July 31, 2026. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the highly-anticipated MCU blockbuster as we have them.

REVIEW: New 28 Years Later film, shot in Somerset - worth a watch?
AN AWARD-WINNING cast has helped reignite the horror film genre with the release of the new 28 Years Later Film, partly filmed in Somerset. Here's my review: Entering as the third instalment of an already impressive first two films, 28 Years Later, directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland, has delivered one of the best post-apocalyptic survivalist horror-thriller films I have ever watched. READ MORE: Aaron Taylor-Johnson: Innovative filming makes 28 Years Later 'like no other' READ MORE: 28 Years Later, filmed in Somerset, now available to watch The plot takes you on an emotional rollercoaster that isn't your typical zombie horror film. A classic opening scene, starring the Teletubbies, shows the infected attacking a young boy named Jimmy at the start of the outbreak. Fast forward 28 years, we follow a slightly dysfunctional family with Scottish father Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), an ill Geordie mother Isla (Jodie Comer), and their son Spike (Alfie Williams) - all living on an island with those who aren't infected. Jamie takes Spike on his first outing to the mainland, where we see him praise his son for getting his first infected kill - wiping out a rather fat infected with a bow and arrow. The two then run into trouble, nearly getting killed by an 'Alpha' infected in the process before making it back to the island. A drunken party then follows, where we see Spike fall out with his father, and if you've watched the film, I think you'll agree this is fair. Then, in an effort to save his ill mum, Spike heads out to the mainland with her. 28 Years Later cast and director (L-R) - Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Alfie Williams, Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes, and Danny Boyle. (Image: PA Media) This emotional journey between mother and son is my personal highlight of the whole film. It makes this film unique and makes you realise that there is more to the plot than just the infected vs humanity. Danny Boyle has changed it up from the first two films, and I'll say it's paid off, for sure. We then meet arguably the best character of the film, the 'insane' Doctor Ian Kelson, played by Ralph Fiennes. Known for playing Voldemort in Harry Potter and Chef Slowik in The Menu, Ralph's character helps tie the story together well, with a stand-out performance. I'm in shock at how this film has a 15 age rating, mainly due to Ralph's character and the amount of nudity and gore we get after Spike and Isla leave the island. However, I'm not complaining about the latter, as the kills/violent scenes have come a long way since 28 Days Later was released in 2002. The signature head-ripping off kills are gruesome yet awesome - watch just for this. In parts, 28 Years Later does lack a bit of flow to the storyline, but the strong cast all pay off - including Swedish soldier, Erik Sundqvist, who was effortlessly funny. Spoiler alert - Keeping a keen eye out for when Somerset's Cheddar Gorge would appear, I was a bit sad to only see it featured towards the end of the film. The aerial shots of the gorge are beautiful, and it was 100% a good choice to use it as a set for a film like this. Good news for Somerset, though, as it looks like Danny Boyle and the cast of 28 Years Later will be returning to the southwest county again, after the film was left there on a cliffhanger ending. I would've liked to have seen more of actor Jack O'Connell, who plays Sir Jimmy Crystal, as I think he's a great actor, particularly in Sinners and Skins, among other shows. Overall, this film is a testament to the amazing director that is Danny Boyle, and Jodie Comer's performance is definitely worth some sort of award. Nice to see that 28 Days Later star Cillian Murphy was the executive producer. It would be great to see him on-screen again if there are future films in the pipeline - 4.5/5.

Jon Bernthal's Punisher Joins Cast of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day' With Tom Holland
Jon Bernthal is joining Tom Holland in 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day.' Bernthal – who has played The Punisher on a number of TV shows – is reprising his role for the first time on the big screen TheWrap has learned. The gun toting vigilante was most recently seen in Season 1 of 'Daredevil: Born Again.' Bernthal first appeared as The Punisher back in the second season of 'Daredevil' when it was still a Netflix series. He later reprised it for a few episodes in the aforementioned first season of 'Daredevil: Born Again.' He's tapped not only to appear in the second season of that series but also for a Punisher standalone on Disney+ – akin to the 'Werewolf By Night' and 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Christmas special. Bernthal is also co-writing the standalone special. Along with Holland and Bernthal, Zendaya and Jacob Batalon are both tapped to return for the new Spidey film as MJ and Ned respectively. The only other major casting announced is that 'Stranger Things' alum Sadie Sink has joined the film in an unspecified role. Rumors have swirled about her portraying a number of iconic characters from X-Men mainstay Jean Grey to Gwen Stacy – and possibly even Spider-Gwen. 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' – the fourth film in Holland's tenure as the wall crawler – is being directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and is slated for release on July 31, 2026. Cretton also handled directing duties for Marvel's 'Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings' and a few episodes of the upcoming Disney+ series 'Wonder Man.' Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers wrote the script. The casting was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
