CBI nabs accused who provided SIM cards, mule bank accounts to cyber frauds

Hindustan Times14-06-2025

MUMBAI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a Kalyan resident as part of its crackdown on a cybercrime syndicate specialising in perpetrating investment frauds, and conducted multi-state searches at 10 locations, including in the city. The agency's actions were part of its probe into an investment fraud case in which funds worth ₹160 crore were allegedly defrauded from victims. A special court sent the arrested accused to judicial custody.
The syndicate allegedly duped gullible victims by entrapping them with the lucrative offer of shares of reputed listed companies at discounted rates and then misappropriated their funds, CBI officials said on Friday. The accused, identified as Pratik Tanpure, a resident of Kalyan, was arrested by the CBI after his alleged role as a logistics provider to such criminal networks surfaced in its probe into an investment fraud case against the syndicate.
CBI's probe revealed that the accused was allegedly actively involved in providing pre-activated SIM cards and mule bank accounts to cybercrime networks, thereby enabling and sustaining their illegal operations, agency officials said. During a search at his premises, the CBI recovered incriminating material in his possession, which is being assessed for their evidentiary value, agency officials said.
Apart from the premises of the arrested accused, the agency also carried out searches at nine other locations in Mumbai, Pune and Nashik in Maharashtra, Hisar (Haryana), Delhi and Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) as part of its crackdown, internally known as Operation Chakra-V.
The CBI's case pertains to an organised, orchestrated fraud wherein unsuspecting individuals were allegedly cheated through a fraudulent mobile application and WhatsApp groups, the agency officials said. The perpetrators deceitfully lured innocent investors by promising shares of reputed listed companies at discounted rates. Once the victims invested their hard-earned money, the accused misappropriated the funds, causing significant financial loss to the investors, the officials said.
During the coordinated searches, the CBI seized digital and documentary evidence from the premises of the accused persons, unearthing the modus operandi employed to dupe innocent investors, the officials said, adding that 'Operation Chakra-V' underscores the central agency's unwavering commitment to dismantling cyber-crime syndicates and infrastructure supporting commission of such offences.
Last September, as part of a similar crackdown, the CBI had arrested 26 alleged cybercriminals, including 10 in Pune, who used illegal call centres across four Indian cities to cheat people globally, especially in the United States. In the same month, the CBI also busted another transnational cybercrime network by arresting its key operator from Mumbai.

Two from MP arrested in ‘work-from-home' scam that targeted thousands

Two men from Tikamgarh district, Madhya Pradesh were arrested by the Adilabad police for their involvement in a large cyber crime syndicate operating across State borders. They were nabbed following a breakthrough in an investigation into a 'work-from-home' scam that duped hundreds of people across the country. The two arrested individuals have been identified as Saurabh Raikwar, 24, and Ritik Sen, 19. Saurabh was allegedly operating a digital marketing business as a cover, while both acted as commission agents for larger cyber crime handlers, targeting victims through deceptive online interactions. The duo are believed to be part of a bigger gang of over 250 members, said the SP of Adilabad, Akhil Mahajan. The officer said that the gang is involved in systematic cyber fraud worth crores of rupees. 'They have been luring victims with promises of earning between ₹2,000 to ₹8,000 per day by performing simple tasks from home. Using WhatsApp and Telegram, they initiate conversations and entice victims with small payments for initial tasks before coercing them into transferring large sums,' said the officer. One of the victims, Chenna Shivakumar, 34, from Jaindapur village of Adilabad, lodged a complaint after losing ₹5.03 lakh to the fraud on June 14. Following his report, the police launched a special operation and successfully tracked the accused to Madhya Pradesh, where they were arrested. During the raid, police seized four mobile phones, one laptop, three bank passbooks, a keyboard, monitor, and a PAN card. These items are believed to have been used to carry out fraudulent activities. It has been established that the gang contacted nearly 900 people every month, attempting to deceive them under the pretext of work-from-home opportunities. SP Mahajan confirmed that special teams have been formed to trace and apprehend the remaining members of the gang, including both domestic and international operatives.

India's export sector resilient even as geopolitical tensions test global trade stability: FIEO President

New Delhi [India], June 23 (ANI) India's export sector remains 'resilient and adaptive' at a time geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, including the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict, pose certain challenges to global trade dynamics, President of Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) SC Ralhan said. 'Our trade with both Iran and Israel, while important, constitutes a small share of our overall export-import basket. The government and industry are jointly monitoring developments to ensure minimal disruption,' the exporters' body chief said. FIEO said it anticipates some short-term impact on demand and logistics, particularly in the Gulf region, which serves as a crucial hub for Indian exports. 'Increased shipping costs, longer transit times, and rising marine insurance premiums may add pressure, especially in price-sensitive sectors,' he added. However, he noted that Indian exporters have repeatedly demonstrated agility in rerouting shipments, diversifying markets, and managing financial exposures. 'The robust MSME and large-scale exporters, coupled with strong government support mechanisms, will help cushion any near-term shocks,' he noted. Crude oil price volatility is being closely watched, as it can influence inflation and logistics costs. However, India's diversified energy procurement strategy and the Reserve Bank's proactive stance help maintain liquidity and macroeconomic stability. Over the years, India has diversified its energy supplies, and a large volume of them do not come through the Strait of Hormuz now. Oil Marketing Companies have supplies for several weeks and continue to receive energy supplies from several routes. Petroleum Minister Hardeep Puri vowed his ministry will take all necessary steps to ensure the stability of fuel supplies to citizens. 'Overall, while there are temporary headwinds, we see this as an opportunity for Indian exporters to explore alternate routes, strengthen regional partnerships, and consolidate India's role as a reliable trade partner in uncertain times,' the FIEO President said. The FIEO said it is committed to supporting exporters with timely guidance, market intelligence, and policy advocacy to ensure continued momentum in the global trade journey. (ANI)
