Period drama war film will 'rip your heart out' but you only have days to watch it
The period drama now available to stream on BBC iPlayer - but won't be for much longer
A film hailed as "very British", offering a unique perspective on the second world war, is set to depart from BBC iPlayer in just a few days.
Set against the backdrop of the 1940 London Blitz, a screenwriter named Catrin and an impromptu cast and crew unite to create a film aimed at lifting national spirits and encouraging America to enter the war.
Their Finest (2016) follows the journey of young woman, Catrin Cole (Gemma Arterton), who is recruited by the Ministry of Information to pen scripts for propaganda films.
Working alongside another screenwriter and an actor, they endeavour to produce a movie that will elevate national morale and persuade America to join the war - all while navigating the tumultuous environment of the London Blitz and the aftermath of the Dunkirk evacuation.
Catrin and her team encounter numerous obstacles along the way, including the relentless bombings.
She subsequently collaborates with fellow screenwriter Buckley (Sam Claflin) and quirky actor Ambrose Hilliard (Bill Nighy), discovering her voice, exploring the potency of storytelling, and dealing with the intricacies of war.
Although fictional, the film draws inspiration from the real-life efforts of the British film industry to bolster the war effort.
On the film reviewing platform Rotten Tomatoes - where the film boasts a sparkling 91% fresh score - fans commend this touch of reality as one of the film's most compelling aspects.
"Nearly faultless. Great cast, perfectly directed. A perfect combination of the richest subject in history (WW2), great script, a warm romance, tragedy and poignancy," one viewer penned.
Their Finest skilfully intertwines narratives of love, self-discovery, loss and sorrow while focusing on the characters' mission.
"A delight from start to finish, except for the part where the film rips your heart out," another critic expressed, with another adding: "A very English movie and incredibly well done."
The further shared: "Tremendous cast and performances supporting an excellent story and script. Both heart wrenching and uplifting. Add to your watch list."
The star-studded cast includes Arterton, Claflin and Nighy, as well as Jeremy Irons, Jack Huston, Helen McCrory, Eddie Marsan and Jake Lacy. Their Finest is currently available to stream on BBC iPlayer, but will be leaving the platform on June 7.

For 2025 ahead of Glastonbury's fallow year in 2026, The Pop Up Hotel has introduced a number of 'luxurious upgrades and carefully curated wellness experiences designed to pamper guests like never before,' including a salon in conjunction with Sephora and bespoke spa treatments. A wellness space will allow those tired after a day of dancing to their favourite artists to enjoy saunas, ice baths, yofa, and breathwork sessions. As well as several new food and drink options, The Pop Up Hotel will also have their own live performances and pool parties for guests to enjoy. The Pop Up Hotel also offers travel options to get to and from the festival site – including a private helicopter. 'Hotel guests can beat the worst of the traffic and fly into Glastonbury like rock royalty,' they announced earlier this month. 'By parking at easily-accessible and conveniently-located Hartham Park Estate or Homewood House Hotel, guests can hop on a 15-minute helicopter transfer for the final 30 miles to Glastonbury, bypassing the gridlocked traffic below. Heli-Hop return flights start from £1,399 per person.' However, a spokesperson for Glastonbury said the festival 'absolutely does not condone' the use of private helicopters to the event. More Trending 'This offsite accommodation provider has no relationship to us, so we cannot control how people arrive there. We absolutely do not condone the use of helicopters,' they said (per The Sun). 'Here at Glastonbury Festival, we encourage people to arrive by public transport or to lift share if they do decide to drive.' Jack Draper failed in his bid to be crowned the new British king of Queen's Club after a three-set defeat by Jiri Lehecka in the semi-final. Lehecka became the first Czech finalist since Ivan Lendl 35 years ago after a 6-4 4-6 7-5 victory. Edinburgh celebrity chef reveals how he deals with 'difficult customers'

More info An Edinburgh celebrity chef who has served members of the royal family has revealed how he deals with "difficult customers" after years in the restaurant industry. Tom Kitchin runs The Kitchen, a Michelin-starred eatery in Leith, serving gourmet British cuisine inspired by French cooking techniques. The celebrity chef also operates The Scran & Scallie in Edinburgh and Bonnie Badger in Gullane. Another eatery, Kora, previously on Bruntsfield Place, closed earlier this year. Tom has even launched a frozen food line available in Home Bargains. He and his wife Michaela run the restaurants and Tom recently shared what makes the Kitchin so successful. In a video posted to his Instagram, Tom shared tips and tricks on running his Edinburgh culinary empire, including details on some of the celebrities that have passed through the doors. He also opened up on how to deal with "difficult" customers. Tom shared a memorable moment from when he and Michaela first launched The Kitchen. He said: "The one thing I always remember is that first time Michaela took the phone and she said 'I'm very sorry, we're full. Would you like to be put on the waiting list?' That was a big moment." When asked his favourite person that had been in the restaurant, Tom said: "We've had royals, we've had movie stars, we've had David Beckham, all sorts of people. But really I'm a football man and when Kenny Dalglish offered to pull the first pint in our pub, that for me was really the best." Tom also revealed how he and Mikaela deal with more unruly diners. He said: "How did we deal with difficult customers when we first started? That was really difficult for me. Fortunately, I had Mikaela with me who is very good at dealing with difficult customers and she'd go out and fix it for me.
