Warisan to go solo in polls

The Star22-05-2025

KOTA KINABALU: Parti Warisan has confirmed that it will contest the coming 17th Sabah state election on its own without alliances or deals with other parties.
Warisan secretary-general Datuk Loretto Padua Jr, who disclosed this, said the party would contest using its own logo and had no intention of forming any political pact.
He said talk that Warisan was joining Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) or making 'backdoor deals' was completely false.
'These are lies being spread deliberately on social media to confuse and mislead the public,' he said in a statement yesterday.
Loretto said Warisan's only alliance is with the people of Sabah and that it will continue fighting for their rights and future.
'We will not be a part of the ongoing political games. Our focus is on issues that matter, such as the rising cost of living, water and power disruptions, jobs and fair control over our own resources,' he said.
Loretto said he was disappointed that the office of the Yang di-Pertua Negeri had been dragged into the political mud.
'The TYT is above politics and must be respected. Do not use the TYT for political gain,' he added.
He urged Sabahans to stay focused and not be misled by distractions.
'The coming election is about choosing leaders who truly care about Sabah, not those who engage in political games,' he said.
He said Warisan has consistently remained the sole opposition party in Sabah and believed that forming coalitions was not the solution.
'The way forward is a firm, people-based movement that puts Sabah first. We will continue to work with the people, not political elites,' he added.

Policy document wraps up session

Published on: Monday, June 23, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 23, 2025 By: Jonathan Nicholas Text Size: Zainie (centre) with Lim on his left and participants consisting of lawyers, local leaders and activists. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah's civil society platform, Sabar (Sabah Action Body Advocating Rights) wrapped up town hall sessions under the 'Sabah Voices to Action' series with the message that the future lies in empowering youth and demanding accountability from politicians. It was the final of their eight engagements across Sabah which saw over 300 participants converge at Wisma Wanita, Sunday. Sabar Chairman Datuk Zainie Abdul Aucasa expressed pride in presenting a document of aspirations and actions derived from four months of listening to the people. He said the policy document will be submitted to all parties contesting the coming state election, in the expectation that the proposals would be adopted in their manifestos and more importantly, implemented after the polls. 'We don't want to see a repeat of past promises that were abandoned after elections. This initiative is about building a new political culture that instills responsibility and follows through,' he said. Looking ahead, Zainie revealed that Sabar would shift focus toward engaging young Sabahans in the next phase of their work. Advertisement 'We want to walk with the youth, shape their political mindset, and help them understand the importance of choosing leaders who keep their word. 'They must know how to pick representatives who genuinely deliver on their promises. That's how we build a better Sabah, one election at a time,' he said. He hoped the manifesto guide crafted from these town hall sessions would serve not just this election cycle, but for many to come. SAPP Women's Youth Wing Chief, Yvonne Yong Yit Phung, hailed the initiative as a much-needed departure from the typical political echo chamber, calling for more youth to step forward and help shape Sabah's future. Yvonne praised the organisers for encouraging proactive dialogue and engaging youth in meaningful policy discussions. 'The way questions were framed, how discussions were guided, it was very professional. It showed how much the youth care, and how much potential they have if given the platform,' she said. Vice President of Borneo History, Sahar Piasin, 65, welcomed the shift in focus at the final town hall, noting a refreshing change from previous events. 'Unlike before, which mostly centred around MA63, this time the emphasis was more on youth development through education, rural empowerment, and infrastructure. That made it very interesting,' he said. Sahar noted that speakers appeared to deliberately target students and young people, which, in turn, deserves the attention of Sabahan parents. 'They weren't just asking for opportunities, they were being spoken to directly about the future of their children. That made a real impact,' he added. Borneo History was invited to host an exhibition at the event, showcasing historical documents and treaties, some of which were made available for sale. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Purely work of students, say Warisan

Published on: Monday, June 23, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 23, 2025 Text Size: Azis defended citizens' constitutional right to peaceful assembly and praised the UMS students for their civic engagement against corruption. Kota Kinabalu: Opposition Parti Warisan denied any involvement in organising the controversial Himpunan Gempur Rasuah 2.0 rally where a caricature resembling Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was burned in public – believed the first such incident in the nation. Warisan said the gathering was entirely organised by the student group Suara Mahasiswa UMS, apparently in response to questions being raised by netizens over a Warisan leader seen in the company of the youths in the viral video. In a statement, Sunday, Warisan Information Chief Datuk Mohd Azis Jamman said it was not involved in any capacity in organising the demonstration and respected the student organisers' position that no political parties be involved in their event. 'The peaceful assembly was fully organised by Suara Mahasiswa UMS and we respect their clear and consistent position that no political party should be involved in their event,' Azis said. To ensure no party representation at the rally, Warisan had instructed members not to wear clothing bearing the party logo if they chose to attend in their personal capacity. Azis said he deployed officers to monitor the event and no Warisan symbols or party materials were displayed during the gathering. Regarding the banner burning incident on the second day of the rally, Azis said there was no involvement from Warisan members in that act and that it was initiated by students themselves. Advertisement Azis defended citizens' constitutional right to peaceful assembly and praised the UMS students for their civic engagement against corruption. 'I congratulate the students of UMS who were bold enough to stand up against corruption while complying with the legal process in organising the event,' he said, calling for more independent civil society movements to hold those in power accountable. His clarification comes amid speculation about political party involvement in the student-led anti-corruption demonstration. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? PENAMPANG: GRS direct member Datuk Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan has urged a generational leadership shift in Sabah, particularly in Moyog, calling for new leaders with fresh ideas. He said Sabahans have been misled for too long and real change requires space for sincere, critical thinkers, during Moyog Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah AGM on Sunday. Khairul commended veteran Datuk John Ambrose for stepping aside to allow Datuk Ceasar Mandela Malakun to lead, describing it as a positive example of political renewal. He acknowledged GRS's uneven support across Sabah but said its reform-minded stance under Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor positions it well for the future. Ceasar Mandela said Moyog is ready to be a GRS stronghold, citing improved federal funding, reclaimed state powers, and key infrastructure gains under GRS. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
