BMC data shows Mumbai recorded reduction in emission levels
Mumbai has recorded a declining trend of carbon emissions between 2019 and 2024, shows the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's data that was presented in the annual environment budget released on June 5.
Carbon emission refers to the release of carbon into the atmosphere in the form of carbon dioxide. This process is often a result of human activities like burning fossil fuels, industrial processes and deforestation.
Emissions are measured as per carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e)–a unit of measurement used to compare the climate impact of different Green House Gases (GHG) by expressing them in terms of equivalent amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2).
The trend was recorded to make a GHG inventory for Mumbai which includes an analysis of sectors and sources that emit carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide. Civic officials said that such an inventory enables the city to build evidence-based mitigation actions and policies to monitor progress–aligned with global community standards. As part of the Mumbai Climate Action Plan (MCAP), the first GHG inventory was recorded in 2019.
According to the GHG inventory, nearly 74% of the emissions are contributed by stationary energy sources–which includes buildings and entities that depend on fossil fuel, electricity or thermal energy, while 19.1% is contributed by the transportation sector and the balance 6% is emitted from waste resources.
According to the data, Mumbai recorded a decline of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emission levels by an approximate 2 million tonnes between 2019 and 2023.
The civic body's data shows that in 2019, a baseline study of emissions showed 26.75 million tonnes of which stood at 24.6 million tonnes by 2023–which is a decline by 2.15 million tonnes.
'Between 2019 and 2021, Mumbai's emissions steadily fell reaching their lowest point in 2021, largely due to pandemic induced economic slowdowns, before rising again post 2021,' said the BMC's budget document.
Besides this, the data also shows that there has been a decline in emission from solid waste –which the civic body has attributed to the centralised waste processing facility that was started in Kanjurmarg and the BMC's data also shows that the waste sector has shown an overall reduction of emission by 6.4% which equates 1.57 million tonnes of CO2e.
'Emissions from the waste sector have shown a slight decrease, especially due to reduced emissions from solid waste generated in the city, which may be attributed to improved centralised waste processing and monitoring,' the BMC's document read.
'There are reductions observed in the commercial, institutional buildings and facilities sector (by 26.6%) and residential buildings sector (by 11.36%),' the document further said.
Meanwhile, in its budget, the civic body has put forward a target of reducing Mumbai's overall emission levels by 30% till 2030 and 44% by 2040. Furthermore, the BMC in its climate budget has set up long-term targets that are to be achieved by 2030. According to the document, the civic body has aimed to reduce air pollution by at least 30%, urban heat island effect by 40% and increase vegetation cover by 40%. Furthermore, in its climate budget, the BMC has also proposed decarbonising Mumbai by at least 50% by electrification of all the existing BEST buses and civic-owned vehicles.

Plan to allot houses on priority to urban poor lodged in transit houses
1 2 3 Bhubaneswar: To ensure timely allotment of units to urban poor in affordable housing projects, the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) and Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) have decided to collaborate with a focus on people staying in different transit houses in the city. A high-level meeting of the housing and urban development department was convened recently, where the decision was taken to ensure allotment of houses on a priority basis for beneficiaries staying in transit houses. BMC personnel shifted several people to the transit houses while BDA constructed affordable housing for them. Following the meeting, the department issued a notification mentioning the steps to be taken by the BMC and BDA to shift the beneficiaries to pucca houses, beginning with the transit house at Niladri Vihar, where 639 families are staying. BMC has been asked to shift these families to the affordable housing project in Chandrasekharpur. "A detailed enumeration is to be conducted by the joint enumeration team to be constituted from both the BMC and BDA to ascertain the exact number of families residing in the transit houses. "Some families who have deposited part of the beneficiary contribution and are unable to pay the balance amount will be facilitated to avail bank loans. Based on the eligibility for allotment of dwelling units, a demand notice will be issued in their favour," the notification added. Officials also discussed the construction of the second phase of Shantipalli housing project at Satya Nagar. BDA has been asked to take immediate steps for the eviction of encroachments for the construction of the second phase of the project. The first phase of the project has been completed and houses were handed over to the beneficiaries, sources said.

Lake levels rise 12% in 24hrs, easing water cut fears
Mumbai: The water stock in the seven lakes that supply to the city saw the steepest single-day increase this monsoon between June 19 and 20, surging from 1.9 lakh million litres (13.19% of total capacity) to 3.64 lakh million litres (25.17%). Earlier this week, on June 17 (Tuesday), the lake stock had dipped below 10%, reaching a worrying 9.78%, prompting the BMC to tap into its reserve stock, which the civic body has stopped following heavy rainfall in the lake catchment areas across Thane, Palghar and Nashik. The seven lakes are: Tansa, Bhatsa, Modak Sagar, Tulsi, Vihar, Upper Vaitarna, and Middle Vaitarna. Officials from the hydraulic department attributed the 12% jump in lake stock to intense rainfall in their catchment areas. The rise has eased fears of immediate water cuts. The civic body usually imposes water cuts in the 5-10% range in June of there is inadequate rainfall. Last year, for instance, a 10% water cut was imposed in the city from June 5 to July 29 after lake levels had dipped. Forest dept, BMC visit SRK's home over complaints of CRZ violations
1 2 Mumbai: A joint team of forest department and BMC officials inspected actor Shah Rukh Khan 's bungalow, Mannat, at Bandra Bandstand, Friday following a complaint of coastal regulation zone violations during renovation of the property, reports Sanjeev Devasia. The property comprises Mannat, a heritage structure, and an annex structure, a multi-storey building. As Khan and his family have shifted to a nearby place due to the renovation, the officials were met by his staff who told them they would submit all documents concerning the permissions obtained. When contacted, Pooja Dadlani, Khan's manager, said "There are no complaints. All work is going on as per guidelines." The property is undergoing renovation and clearances were earlier sought from the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) for it. The renovation included adding two additional floors to the annexe structure. A forest department official said, "A team did carry out a site inspection as we received a complaint about renovation permissions.
