Two top Edinburgh eateries crowned 'Scotland's Best' at Street Food Awards

Two popular Edinburgh eateries were crowned during this year's Scottish Street Food Awards, highlighting the capital's many trailblazing and standard-setting street food restaurants.
The winners were announced on Sunday (June 22) with Smoked Tomago coming away with the coveted Scottish Street Food Award Champion prize.
Originally from Hong Kong, Smoked Tomago specialises in traditional Japanese tamogoyaki, or rolled omelettes. They also offer other authentic Japanese and Korean food.
The pop-up eatery serves food every Tuesday in Edinburgh at the Leith Walk Police Box.
Another Edinburgh favourite, Fire Bowl, also left the awards with a prize after earning the People's Choice award.
Fire Bowl cooks up donburi and the venture launched after its two founders Euan and Andie traveled around South Korea and Japan for three months trying street food. They wanted to bring home the cuisine and add a traditional Scottish twist.
The awards were hosted at The Pitt Market, which hosts a cluster of street food stalls in Granton.
On The Pitt's Instagram, a post read: "It's been a blowout weekend full of great food (and strong winds), but we've had an amazing time hosting some incredible culinary talent here at The Pitt! Congratulations to our incredible winners, and thank you to all the lovely vendors who it's been a pleasure to host.
According to the Pitt's blodg, the awards were selected by a judging panel of Sam Yorke – Head Chef at the Michelin-starred Heron, Jo Laidlaw – The List Edinburgh Food & Drink Editor, Callum Easter – Artist and Musician, Gaby Soutar – The Scotsman Restaurant Reviewer, Navida Galbraith – The Pitt Head of Ops and Programme, and Richard Johnson – Founder of the British Street Food Awards.

Smoked Tamago, known for its contemporary Japanese-Korean dishes, was crowned Scottish Street Food Award Champion, while Fire Bowl, specialists in fiery East Asian fusion, scooped the People's Choice Award. ‌ Both will now head to London in September to compete in the British Street Food Awards, with the chance to reach the European final in Munich this October. ‌ Smoked Tamago wowed the judges with its signature seaweed Tamagoyaki, a fluffy Japanese rolled egg, and a Korean-style rice burger. Headlining a line-up of nine finalists, each trader presented their two best dishes to a formidable panel, including Sam Yorke, Head Chef at Michelin-starred Heron; Jo Laidlaw, Food & Drink Editor at The List Edinburgh; musician Callum Easter; Gaby Soutar, restaurant critic at The Scotsman; Navida Galbraith, Head of Ops and Programme at The Pitt; and British Street Food Awards founder Richard Johnson. 'We always hope to find something completely different and new when judging these awards and that's exactly what Smoked Tamago served up,' said Johnson. 'The unique mix of sweet, savoury and smokiness in the Tamagoyaki was incredible, and all of the judges agreed the rice burger was a revelation.' Smoked Tamago has a history of breaking new ground. After introducing Tamagoyaki to the Hong Kong street food scene in 2016, where it quickly became a sensation, the team relocated to Scotland. ‌ Since then, they've built a loyal following through pop-ups and events, with regular appearances at Errol Sunday Market and the Leith Walk Police Box. With every made-to-order roll, they're on a mission to spread 'the gospel of the mighty Tamagoyaki'. Meanwhile, Fire Bowl, based at The Pitt, impressed enough eaters to take the People's Choice award. Their chicken skewers were hailed by judges as 'some of the best ever tasted'. ‌ The street food stall was born from a trip across East Asia, where founders Andie and Euan ate their way from Seoul to Osaka. Today, Fire Bowl blends those inspirations with Scottish flair, from donburi bowls and yakitori skewers to Highland beef with whisky tare and their signature 'neep' kimchi. Dumpling Mama took second place in the overall Best in Scotland award, with beautifully crafted dumplings that the judges described as 'exquisitely presented and perfectly balanced'. Oven Pizza, based in Fife, earned praise for 'light and delicious' Neapolitan-style pizzas made with luxury ingredients imported from Italy. The family-run business has become known for its cheeky Scottish twists on Italian classics, from fried mozzarella to dirty fries, and promises a culinary tour through Venice, Florence and Naples. Reflecting on the quality of this year's finalists, Navida Galbraith, Head of Ops and Programme at The Pitt, said: 'It was a really tough job judging the nine amazing finalists. "All of them did themselves proud and we've had an incredible time hosting them at The Pitt. Smoked Tamago and Fire Bowl are worthy winners and we wish them the best of luck representing Scotland at the British Street Food Awards in September.'

On June 10th, Kingston School of Art's 2024 graduate fashion show in East London showcased the work of 22 emerging designers. Each presented six-look collections that delved into deeply personal experiences and cultural identities, spanning themes of heritage, sustainability, and individual expression in both menswear and womenswear. Among the notable designers was 22-year-old Ashanti Clark from South London, whose collection drew inspiration from her Caribbean family heritage. Her designs incorporated elements from her grandmother's home, such as lace, mahogany, and vibrant textiles, alongside nods to her mother's 1990s fashion. Clark's innovative "luggage dresses," crafted from original 1970s migration luggage, symbolized themes of home, belonging, and the preservation of cultural memory. West London's Bay Paley, 23, found inspiration in Japanese tea culture, creating garments that explored reflection and healing. Influenced by a three-month internship with Issey Miyake in Japan, Paley's collection featured both literal and abstract interpretations of tea, including a pleated tea bag-inspired skirt and a dress referencing the ritual's medicinal properties. Her designs aimed to encourage pause and reconnection in a fast-paced world. Olivia Williams, 23, from Croydon, presented a collection that bridged rural and urban life. Her work referenced Black hiking groups in the UK and the Windrush generation, reimagining furnishings and outdoor materials like tents and umbrellas into modern hiking apparel. With floral prints inspired by Jamaican flora and homages to her grandmother's wardrobe, the collection celebrated community and safe spaces, both in nature and at home. David Frizzell, course leader of the BA (Hons) Fashion programme, emphasized that this year's collections underscored the course's focus on personal storytelling, sustainability, and technical skill. "Our students are reacting in more personal ways than ever before," Frizzell stated. "They're making meaningful statement collections that aren't wasteful or frivolous.' Sponsored by fashion brands Dewhirst and ME+EM, the show continued Kingston University's tradition of fostering the careers of innovative and socially conscious designers.

Following a successful Japan-exclusive release, the collection introduces six iconic Hong Kong-style sauces as adorable capsule toy charms. From June 22, 2025, Bandai's official GBO shops in Hong Kong and Macau, along with gashapon machines in major department stores and malls, will feature exclusive Lee Kum Kee sauce-themed gashapon machines.
