Dhofar expects high hotel occupancy as khareef draws visitors

Muscat Daily3 days ago

Salalah – The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism has confirmed that hotel establishments in Dhofar governorate have completed their preparations to welcome tourists for the 2025 khareef season.
Hotels in the region are offering promotional packages and marketing programmes in anticipation of a high number of visitors during the season, which attracts tourists from across the region each year.
Many hotels have introduced competitive prices and improved hospitality services, including guest reception and departure assistance, as well as guided tours to key tourist, heritage and entertainment sites.
A key highlight this year is the increased presence of qualified Omani staff in the hotel and tourism sector, further supporting the local hospitality industry.
Ahmed bin Mohammed al Ghassani, Director of the Quality Control Department at the Directorate General of Heritage and Tourism in Dhofar, said preparations began with an annual coordination meeting involving the directorate and representatives from the hotel and tourism sectors. The meeting focused on service readiness and maintaining high standards of quality across all facilities.
Ghassani said there are now 100 licensed hotel establishments in Dhofar, offering more than 8,000 rooms. 'In 2024, hotel occupancy rates reached 90%, and we expect these figures to increase this year due to attractive marketing campaigns and seasonal promotions from hotels and tourism companies,' he said.
He also noted the continued use of the 'Sikka' app during the 2025 season. Supervised by the Office of the Governor of Dhofar in coordination with the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism and Dhofar Municipality, the app regulates the real estate market and formalises rental agreements between landlords and tenants.
The platform protects the rights of all parties and provides property owners with new ways to market their properties within Oman and abroad.

CNN host marks milestone amidst Oman's wonders

Veteran CNN journalist Richard Quest recently marked a significant personal and professional milestone with his visit to Oman — his 100th country visited. Known worldwide for his distinctive voice and as the host of Quest Means Business and Quest's World of Wonder, Richard described the visit as 'a very special trip,' made even more unforgettable by the dramatic landscapes of Al Jabal Al Akhdhar. Richard Quest visits the famous Friday Nizwa goat auction market. - Pictures courtesy: CNN In an exclusive email interview, Richard shared, 'Oman was a fitting choice for number 100. Perched atop the cliffs of Al Jabal Al Akhdhar, I couldn't think of a more beautiful place to celebrate joining the century club.' Richard's visit to Muscat was primarily to moderate the keynote session titled 'The Shape of Things to Come' at the inaugural Advantage Oman Forum. The forum brought together key global and regional leaders to discuss investment, sustainability, artificial intelligence and future economic trends. Reflecting on the event, Richard said, 'It was fascinating because there was a refreshing honesty in the discussions. People spoke freely and the dialogue around Oman's positioning on the global stage was encouraging.' During his brief but action-packed itinerary, Richard ventured deep into Majlis Al Jinn, one of the world's largest cave chambers. 'It was surreal, otherworldly,' he recalled. 'Just realising you're going inside Mother Earth like that — vast, deep and dramatic. Looking down and seeing my cameraman as a mere speck was unbelievable. That, for me, was a true highlight.' Richard Quest, Majlis al Jinn Richard also indulged in Oman's rich culinary traditions, developing a newfound love for lamb and particularly praising Shuwa, the slow-cooked spiced lamb dish traditionally prepared underground. 'It was tremendous. The hotel explained the whole process and the result was simply delicious,' he said. 'I loved the blend of Levant, Middle Eastern and international flavours in Omani cuisine.' Praising the warmth of Omani hospitality, Richard noted, 'It's the watchword here — from the airline to the hotels. There's an effort to position Oman as a unique, classy destination. I think that recognition is significant.' He also lauded Oman Air and the ongoing developments at Muscat International Airport, commending CEO Con Korfiatis for driving remarkable changes. 'There's potential here — not just as a tourism destination, but also geopolitically,' Richard added, 'especially given Oman's long history of internationalism.' Richard took home more than just memories. 'Yes, I bought my traditional souvenir spoon,' he chuckled, 'but it's the experiences — like seeing rose water distillation or sailing on a dhow — that will stay with me. Richard Quest, Majlis al Jinn Oman's versatility is astounding.' Muscat now takes centre stage in the next episode of Quest's World of Wonder, which will air on CNN International in August. The episode showcases the capital's dramatic coastlines, vibrant traditional souks and rich maritime heritage. 'Oman has long been a gateway between East and West,' Richard reflected 'and this trip reminded me why.' Looking forward, Richard shared that Angola will be his 101st country. 'I'm running out of countries — but not really,' he laughed. 'There's still about 95 more to go, but they do get harder as you go down the list. Oman, though, was a proud choice for number 100.' Oman's fiscal consolidation a model of economic reform: World Bank

MUSCAT, JUNE 20 Oman's fiscal consolidation journey has been hailed by the World Bank as a notable example of effective economic reform and responsible fiscal management. In its latest Gulf Economic Update, published by the Economic Policy Unit of the World Bank Group for the MENA region, the multilateral institution highlights the measures implemented by the Omani government to restore fiscal balance following the twin shocks of the 2014 oil price collapse and the Covid-19 pandemic. 'Oman has made substantial progress in enhancing its economic resilience and building a foundation for sustainable growth,' the report stated. 'Like other GCC countries, it has grappled with the challenge of reducing dependence on oil revenues while managing public finances amid volatile global oil prices. During previous periods of low oil prices, Oman experienced twin deficits and relied heavily on borrowing to cover fiscal gaps. In recent years, however, it has undertaken significant steps to reduce its reliance on oil and strengthen fiscal sustainability.' The report cited major reforms introduced under Oman Vision 2040 and the 2020–2024 Medium-Term Fiscal Plan (MTFP) as critical to achieving this progress. These initiatives helped diversify revenue streams, improve public spending efficiency, and manage oil windfalls more prudently. 'These reforms have delivered tangible results,' the report emphasised. 'Since 2022, Oman has markedly improved its fiscal position, notably by reducing public debt through the strategic deployment of oil windfalls. This has expanded fiscal space and enhanced the country's capacity to withstand external shocks. Oman's experience stands out as a model of effective fiscal consolidation and economic reform.' The World Bank also noted Oman's gradual progress in economic diversification. While the hydrocarbon sector continues to dominate, its share of GDP has steadily declined over the past two decades in favour of services, albeit at a modest pace. Within the services sector, wholesale and retail trade, public administration, and defence remain dominant, while sectors like tourism and ICT have yet to significantly expand their economic footprint. Manufacturing has grown in importance but remains concentrated, with nearly 40 per cent of output derived from chemicals and related products. A particularly positive development is the growth of non-hydrocarbon exports, which now account for roughly one-third of total exports, compared to just 12 per cent in the early 2010s. 'Key non-oil exports include chemicals, base metals (especially aluminium), plastics, and mineral products,' the report noted. 'Re-exports — mainly vehicles, electricals, and machinery — have declined in share over the past decade. Oman's key export destinations include the UAE, Saudi Arabia, the US, and India. As for oil exports, China remains the dominant market, receiving nearly 94 per cent of Oman's crude exports.' The report also credited the MTFP with delivering successive fiscal surpluses since 2022 and significantly reducing public debt. 'MTFP targets for fiscal balance were met — and even exceeded,' the report stated. 'Public spending was significantly curtailed, dropping by around 16 per cent of GDP during the five-year period. Public debt declined sharply from approximately 68 per cent of GDP in 2020 to an estimated 35 per cent in 2024, reflecting prudent fiscal management and accelerated debt repayments.' To sustain momentum, the report recommended further domestic revenue mobilisation, with measures already underway — such as the draft Personal Income Tax (PIT) bill currently under consideration. 'Despite the progress made, Oman's economy remains sensitive to global oil prices and demand,' the report cautioned. 'Further efforts to broaden non-oil revenues and continue rationalising public spending — while improving its efficiency and equity — will require a balanced approach that ensures societal buy-in. Strengthening institutional capacity, enhancing governance, and fostering a culture of fiscal responsibility are also essential to create additional fiscal space for growth-enhancing investments and ensure long-term fiscal sustainability.' According to the World Bank, Oman's economic growth is projected to gradually accelerate, rising from 1.7 per cent in 2024 to 3 per cent in 2025, 3.7 per cent in 2026, and 4 per cent in 2027. The rebound will be driven by a 2.1 per cent increase in oil GDP in 2025 and 3.4 per cent growth in non-oil sectors, particularly in construction, manufacturing and services.
