Fast start and flowing Waters help Limerick past Wexford

All-Ireland MHC preliminary quarter-final: Limerick 1-20 Wexford 0-15
Shane Waters and Conor Hough fired Limerick to the All-Ireland minor hurling quarter-finals with victory over Wexford at Semple Stadium.
The Treaty enjoyed a 0-10 to 0-2 head start, and though Wexford briefly made it a one-score game, those eight points would prove their eventual winning margin.
Waters accounted for 0-14 (0-5 from play), while Hough's 51st-minute goal made victory certain as part of a 1-2 tally.
The Model County were boosted before throw-in with the addition of Seán O'Brien to their starting team. Top scorer at this grade last year, the joint-captain missed their Leinster semi-final defeat to Galway due to a thumb injury, but played through the pain here.
O'Brien won the opening free for Darragh Ryan, but Limerick's puck-out domination would see them string together 10 of the next 11 points.
Shane Carroll and Alex Kearns got them up and running before Waters took over. The Na Piarsaigh sharp-shooter scored their next seven points, including four from play, in the space of eight minutes. Hough made it 0-10 to 0-2.
Wexford switched Ryan deeper to shield their defence while O'Brien was brought out to the wing. The moves worked as Tomás Fenlon got their first point from play, quickly followed by Eoghan Whelan and O'Brien scores.
Before long, a super second from wing-back Fenlon and Énán Quinlan's opener had it back to a one-score game.
But Waters ended with a brace, one each from play and a free, for a 0-14 to 0-9 half-time lead.
There were just four scores from play in a scrappy second half. Ryan and Waters exchanged two points each before the first clear-cut goal chance. Hough broke the sliotar for Cathal Dennehy, but Martin Dempsey read his intentions for a terrific diving save.
Still, Waters' third 65 and Dennehy's opener made it a four-point streak and a lead of eight.
The goal originated from captain David O'Keeffe winning the puck-out break. Rory Hanly sped forward to offload for Hough, whose initial shot was stopped by Brian Ivers' brave block. The Monagea attacker met the rebound with a sweet groundstroke to rattle the net.
That 1-19 to 0-12 lead wouldn't be threatened as the Treaty held out against late Wexford pressure.
Marcus Murphy earned his clean sheet by taking O'Brien's one-handed swipe off the line before saving Joey Tobin's kicked effort. For a finish, Jackie Dwane blocked O'Brien's close-range free on the line, and Tobin whipped wide.

Dublin get there in the end against battling Cork

All-Ireland SFC preliminary quarter-final: Dublin 1-19 Cork 1-16 For a long time, this was shaping up to be Cork 's big win of the season. Just as Donegal had run foul of a fluent performance by John Cleary's team a year ago, so too Dublin looked to be on the receiving end this time. There were a couple of differences. Twelve months ago, Cork were at home in Páirc Uí Rinn and more alarmingly for the home team, this was no round-robin affair but an All-Ireland preliminary quarter-final. In the end, Dublin had enough composure to see it out but for most of the match, Cork were either ahead or staying within a point or two. READ MORE The evening started poorly for Dublin with the news that captain, Con O'Callaghan was out. He was replaced by Lorcan O'Dell but only a few weeks ago, in his absence, Armagh had won much as they liked on a visit to Croke Park and an air of apprehension settled on the disappointing crowd of 36,546. Initially, there looked no issue and the favourites sprang into a four-point lead, with a brace of points from Paddy Small and others from Ciarán Kilkenny and Seán Bugler. Cork's calm persistence characterised the first half. Chris Jones was allowed to get too close and opened the scoring in the ninth minute, followed shortly after by Mark Cronin's free to halve the lead. In the 12th minute a line ball from Brian Hurley into Ian Maguire was carried towards the Dublin goal before he spotted Jones making a run and like that the ball was in the net and the lead changed hands. Hurley's follow-up point meant that his team had shot an unanswered 1-3 in seven minutes. Dublin had been having some success on kick-outs, as Peadar Ó Cofaigh-Byrne got his hand to most, landing in his vicinity but Cork's intervention on the breaks improved and by the end of the half, they were stretching away by four after Jones kicked another score for a lead of 1-8 to 0-7. There were some bright spots for Dublin. An energetic display by Killian McGinnis was highlighted by one dispossession in the 23rd minute and Ó Cofaigh-Byrne won a throw-in to provide an assist for Cormac Costello but there was generally too much tentative play and a shot total of fewer than 30 told its own story by the end. On the stroke of half-time, Bugler hoisted a two-pointer to cut the deficit to two, 0-9 to 1-8 – an important contribution given how subdued the team's overall display was proving. Goalkeeper Stephen Cluxton came to his team's rescue when Jones was in on goal again but his opposite number Micheál Aodh Martin landed the 45. On the resumption, Bugler filled in the Con O'Callaghan role from last week by lurking on the spare sideline, awaiting the pop pass from Ó Cofaigh-Byrne, which had sourced two points against Derry at the start of either half but on this occasion, the Cuala centrefielder was beaten to the punch and Cork took off instead. Dublin did however level the match by outscoring their opponents 0-3 to 0-1 in the first 10 minutes of the half and even better, almost immediately hit the front, as Brian Howard rediscovered his scoring touch not from one of those sidestep and kick points but having pushed up front, he broke inside the D, lost the defence with a turn and rifled the ball into the net to put his team in front, 1-12 to 1-9. It will have disappointed Dessie Farrell that his team didn't use this as a turning point, instead continuing to play loosely and without much conviction. Cork to their credit took the goal in their stride and within three minutes, Colm O'Callaghan and Jones, from a turnover, reduced the deficit by two. Dublin needed to keep the scoreboard moving but Paddy Small kicked a terrible wide and after Ó Cofaigh-Byrne provided an assist for Gannon, his shot from an ambitiously tight angle was swallowed up by the Cork defence. Going into the final quarter, Seán Walsh restored Cork's lead and all the momentum of the Howard goal had evaporated. There was some energy off the bench for Dublin with the arrival of Cian Murphy and Luke Breathnach and the match teetered. To the winners' credit, they finally asserted themselves and after replacement Cathail O'Mahony levelled for Cork for the last time, Costello clipped a point from a Murphy assist and Paddy Small extended the lead. Cronin pulled one back but Daniel O'Mahony fouled Costello off the ball, giving his victim an easy free. In the 67th minute, the last chance came for Cork but Seán McDonnell's attempt at a two-pointer fell short into Cluxton's grateful embrace. The final play saw Howard set up Breathnach for the insurance score. Dublin make it into the quarter-final draw. It wasn't easy but what has been, this season? All-Ireland champions Kerry draw Kildare as Dublin and Cork renew rivalries

DEDENDING CHAMPIONS KERRY will face Kildare, while old rivals Dublin and Cork go head-to-head in the 2025 TG4 All-Ireland senior quarter-finals. The draw, which was made after today's group games, pits last year's finalists Galway against Waterford, and Meath against Tipperary. Kerry, Dublin, Meath and Galway were seeded as group winners, and have home advantage for the games which will be played on the weekend of 5/6 July. Full fixture details will follow from the LGFA. Kildare stunned Armagh this afternoon to progress to the last eight, while Cork, Tipperary and Waterford advanced at the expense of Mayo, Donegal and Leitrim respectively. The wider picture of the Brendan Martin Cup race has become clearer, with the semi-final line-up also confirmed: Kerry/Kildare v Meath/Tipperary, and Dublin/Cork v Galway/Waterford. The last four clashes are currently scheduled as a potential double-header at Glenisk O'Connor Park, Tullamore, on Saturday, 19 July, while Croke Park hosts the All-Ireland final on Sunday, 3 August. Meanwhile, Mayo will face Leitrim, while Donegal and Armagh go head-to-head in the senior relegation play-offs. The latter is a repeat of the Ulster final. Advertisement The winners of both games, scheduled for Saturday, 5 July, at neutral venues, will play senior championship football in 2026. The losers will do battle on Saturday, 12 July: the winners of that tie stay up, with the losers relegated to intermediate for next season. Wins for Cork and Tipperary in All-Ireland camogie championship

WITH ONE ROUND of group games still to play in the Glen Dimplex All-Ireland senior camogie championship, the knockout picture is looking much clearer after Cork, Tipperary, Waterford and Galway recorded comfortable wins this afternoon. Those four counties, along with Kilkenny, will go into the knockout stages, and barring a truly remarkable result when Clare cross the Shannon to play Tipperary next week, the Banner County will complete the sextet. In order for Clare to be overtaken by Limerick, Tipperary would have to win that game by a 60-point margin. Technically, Tipp have cause to try and run up a score in that game since they could yet take top spot in the group, albeit they would need a huge favour from Wexford as well for that to happen. The Model County crew are rooted to the bottom of Group 1, bound for a relegation play-off, where they will play either Derry or Dublin, even if they shock All-Ireland champions Cork. Tipp are certainly in strong scoring form, as they put Limerick to the sword in Cappamore, 4-26 to 0-8. Róisín Howard (1-8) and Grace O'Brien (0-4) were among the main tormentors of the Limerick backs and they opened the scoring, with Karin Blair striding forward from full-back to add a third point. Emily O'Halloran and Sophie O'Callaghan battled gamely in the Limerick defence, while Sarah Gillane made a couple of excellent saves, but the pressure was relentless, with Karen Kennedy and Grace O'Brien scoring goals in a first half 2-12 to 0-1 landslide. Advertisement Denis Kelly showed the depth of his panel by bringing on Jean Kelly and Lucy Purcell in the second half and they both raised green flags of their own, with Limerick taking crumbs of consolation from Orlaith Kelliher and Stephanie Woulfe each scoring of a pair of points from play. SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh was the venue for the other game in the group as Clare attempted to turn the tables on their 2-22 to 0-10 loss to All-Ireland champions Cork when they met in the Munster championship. The Banner couldn't make that leap but they were much improved, opening the game with a superb solo run and finish from Jennifer Daly for the game's only goal in the first minute, with Caoimhe Cahill adding a point immediately afterwards. Without ever playing to their full potential, Cork settled into the contest with an Orlaith Cahalane score after five minutes. They took a three-point lead by half-time and were 0-21 to 1-9 in front by the time the long whistle sounded. Cork had 10 scorers in all with Saoirse McCarthy (0-5, four from play) their top scorer, complemented by some excellent saves from Amy Lee at the other end of the field. All of that means that Clare need to beat Tipperary to overtake their eastern frontier neighbours and go into second spot, Wexford will contest the relegation final regardless of their result against Cork, and the O'Duffy Cup holders just have to avoid a catastrophic defeat to make sure of top spot and straight passage to the last four. In Group 2, Waterford and Galway are headed for a showdown out west next Saturday, a game that will decide pole position and the automatic semi-final berth that comes with it. With the aid of the breeze, Dublin started brightly in Walsh Park and led by 0-6 to 0-1, but that was before Waterford's twin threat of Beth Carton and Niamh Rockett came into the game. Both players found the net midway through the first half en route to scoring 1-4 and 1-6 respectively, and with Waterford leading by five at the interval, the second half was one-way traffic. Abby Flynn and Annie Fitzgerald both found the net as the hosts ran out 4-16 to 1-11 winners. Kilkenny are cemented into third spot but Tommy Shefflin has work to do following a second defeat in advance of a quarter-final clash in Croke Park in a fortnight, as Galway were full value for a 1-17 to 0-12 win at UPMC Nowlan Park today. Again the breeze was a factor and it was Kilkenny who needed to use it in the opening half. Instead they held just one lead in the hour, 0-4 to 0-3 on the back of consecutive points from Caoimhe Keher Murtagh and Aoife Prendergast midway through the half, and just one more white flag before the break was a paltry return. Galway had to work hard for their scores, Ann Marie Starr creating one for Carrie Dolan while Ciara Hickey hoisted over a majestic effort that put two between the sides (0-7 to 0-5) at the turnaround. Kilkenny were at their best in the third quarter when the Laura-Murphy-anchored defence held firm, conceding just three points up to the 45th minute. Three was still the margin (0-13 to 0-10) going into the closing stages but again it was the Tribeswomen who came up with the big plays, one of which saw Aoife Donohoe set up Dolan for a point with a wonderful lift on the run and under pressure on the left sideline. Then Niamh Niland picked the pocket of a Kilkenny defender and swept in the game's only goal from a tight angle to kill the contest with a few minutes to play. Now Waterford and Galway have two chances to reach the last four, Kilkenny are idle next week and Dublin need to avoid a slip-up at home to Derry if they are to stay out of the relegation final.
