Three Omani innovators selected for ITEX 2025 in Malaysia
Winners announced at Sohar University; projects include innovations in water filtration, dental materials, and remote control technology
Muscat – The Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation has announced the selection of three young Omani innovators who will represent the Sultanate of Oman at the International Invention, Innovation and Technology Exhibition (ITEX 2025), scheduled to take place from May 29 to 31 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre in Malaysia.
The selected finalists are Yusra bint Yousef al Ghadani for her innovation titled 'Squid Ink Water Filter Project', Malak bint Khalifa al Harthi for her project 'Portland Cement Composite Reinforced with Carbon Nanoplates as Dental Filling', and Badr bin Salim al Muqbali for his invention 'Remote Control Device for Operating a Ring Bonding Unit'.
The announcement was made during a ceremony at Sohar University, held under the patronage of H E Mohammed bin Sulaiman al Kindi, Governor of North Batinah.
Amna bint Ali al Siyabi, Research and Innovation Capacity Building Specialist at the Ministry, stated that ITEX is among the most prominent international platforms for innovation, offering young inventors the opportunity to develop their projects, engage with their peers from around the world, and present their ideas to investors and industry experts across diverse sectors such as medicine, agriculture, biotechnology, construction, and energy.
She explained that the Ministry received 59 applications for this year's edition, from which 20 innovative projects were shortlisted and evaluated by a specialised jury. The top three were then selected to represent Oman based on their creativity, feasibility, and potential global impact.
Siyabi emphasised the Ministry's commitment to supporting Omani youth and encouraging a shift towards a knowledge-based economy. She highlighted the importance of international participation in helping young innovators turn their ideas into viable start-ups that bring added value to the national economy.
ITEX is an annual exhibition known as the Inventions and Innovations Market. It attracts participants from over 20 countries in Asia and Europe and showcases more than 1,000 inventions across various categories. The event serves as a vital hub for inventors, investors, entrepreneurs, and experts to share ideas, secure funding, and promote technological advancement on a global scale.

OIA announces job creation, global partnerships, and strong returns in 2024
Muscat: The Oman Investment Authority (OIA) revealed a series of achievements and performance indicators from its 2024 operations during its annual media briefing held on Sunday. As part of its efforts to support national employment and economic diversification, the Authority announced the creation of 1,393 direct job opportunities for Omani nationals across its companies and affiliated institutions. During the event, OIA said it also completed six successful divestments, redirecting the proceeds towards new investment opportunities, thereby enhancing the sustainability and dynamism of its assets. The Authority expanded its global investment reach by allocating funds to 13 new international funds, while also establishing new strategic partnerships with both Turkey and Jordan, in line with its drive to enhance international cooperation. OIA further noted an increase in Omanisation rates, reaching 93% in the Authority itself and 77.7% across affiliated companies, underlining its commitment to empowering national talent in the investment sector. In support of local entrepreneurship, the Authority reported a total expenditure of RO 265.5 million on small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in 2024. Key financial milestones The media briefing also showcased several headline financial achievements. OIA's total assets surpassed RO 20 billion, underscoring its growing scale and investment footprint. Furthermore, profits exceeded RO 1.5 billion, reflecting strong returns on investments and prudent financial management. The Authority reaffirmed its role in contributing to the national economy, with its entities channelling RO 800 million into the state budget, helping fund development projects and essential services.

Training programme to improve quality of research, innovation output
Muscat: As part of its ongoing efforts to build national research and innovation capabilities, the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation (MoHERI) has launched the second edition of its Research and Innovation Training Support Programme. This initiative aims to equip researchers and innovators across the Sultanate of Oman with the necessary skills and knowledge through specialised training programmes, developed in partnership with academic institutions. Ali Abdullah al Maskari, Director of Capacity Building at MoHERI, said that the programme was introduced to strengthen national research capacity through targeted training that promotes knowledge production and scientific excellence. "Our aim is to improve the quality of research and innovation output in Oman by providing high-level, specialised training courses in cooperation with academic institutions. This contributes directly to the Sultanate of Oman's global ranking in science and innovation indicators. Previously, each institution could only submit two proposals — one in research and one in innovation. Now, based on the size and research profile of each institution, universities are allowed to submit up to six proposals. This enables wider participation and diversity in training content,' Al Maskari explained. The programme targets a broad segment of society including students, academics, technicians, administrators, researchers, innovators, entrepreneurs, jobseekers and staff at higher education institutions. Both Omani and non-Omani participants aged 18 and above are eligible to apply. The supported fields this year include research and innovation project management, scientific research methodologies, proposal writing, grant and funding acquisition, Artificial intelligence and digital transformation in research. Applications are assessed against a set of criteria that ensure quality and relevance. 'We look at the quality and relevance of the content, the qualifications of the trainers, alignment with national research priorities, the proposed training duration, the training methods used, accessibility of the training location and the availability of essential facilities,' Al Maskari said. Reflecting on the first edition, Al Maskari shared that 18 academic institutions submitted 36 training proposals, of which 18 were funded. The programme attracted 489 participants from across Oman, achieving a satisfaction rate of 87 per cent. One particularly inspiring example was a group of four participants from the Wilayat of Ibri in Al Dhahirah Governorate who attended a three-week training in Al Buraimi without missing a single session — demonstrating extraordinary commitment and enthusiasm. The programme's inaugural cycle also revealed a number of challenges. One such issue was the inconsistent visual branding of the training materials. 'We resolved this by developing a unified template for presentations, posters and electronic materials to be used by all participating institutions,' said Al Maskari. Other measures included shortening some training courses and offering hybrid options (in- person and online) to increase accessibility and participation. Looking ahead, Al Maskari revealed that the ministry is working on launching a new initiative aimed at supporting Omani researchers and innovators to participate in international training programmes. 'This expansion will open new global learning pathways and will be launched in the last quarter of this year. It complements our current programme and directly supports the goals of Oman Vision 2040,' he said.

QS to launch report on Oman's higher education
MUSCAT: On Monday, June 23, Oman will host a landmark academic event to unveil a new global report by QS Quacquarelli Symonds, titled 'The Enormous Potential of Higher Education in the Sultanate of Oman.'
