US moves B-2 bombers as Trump weighs Iran options
Multiple US B-2 bombers appear to have taken off from Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri on Friday night and are heading west, according to flight tracking data CNN has reviewed, as President Donald Trump weighs his military options over a potential airstrike in Iran. A US defense official said there has been no order given to move forward with any kind of operation against Iran using the B-2s. As of Saturday, the planes are flying over the Pacific and appear to be headed toward Guam. Two US defense officials cautioned that any movement of B-2s does not mean an operation is imminent but rather is intended to provide the president with options. Another US official said moving aircraft can be a show of force and a deterrent as Trump deliberates. B-2 bombers are the only plane capable of carrying the Massive Ordinance Penetrator, which experts have highlighted as the only type of bomb potentially capable of destroying Iran's underground Fordow nuclear facility. Each B-2 bomber is able to carry two of these 'bunker buster' bombs, which weigh an impressive 30,000 pounds each. The movement of the B-2 bombers comes as Trump has spent much of the past week in the Situation Room, reviewing attack plans and quizzing officials about the potential consequences of each. The president indicated that his two-week timeline for a decision on US military involvement in Iran is the 'maximum' amount of time — and that he could make up his mind sooner. Trump is set to hold a meeting with his national security team in the Oval Office on Saturday and Sunday evening. The White House didn't respond to a request for comment. On Friday night, eight US Air Force KC-135 Stratotankers took off from Altus, Oklahoma, according to data from FlightRadar24. Over Kansas the tankers refueled two groups of planes, identified on air traffic control audio by their callsigns MYTEE11 FLT and MYTEE21 FLT. The callsign MYTEE has previously been associated with special activity flights by B-2 bombers, and multiple flight trackers on social media said the planes being refueled were B-2 bombers out of Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri. Flight tracking data and air traffic control audio reviewed by CNN show the bombers refueled again off the coast of California, and over Hawaii. Satellite imagery taken on Thursday showed six KC-135 refueling planes stationed at Diego Garcia, a remote island in the Indian Ocean that could be used to refuel the bombers should they continue onward to Iran. US moves stealth bombers as it considers military action against Iran
The US military has sent American B-2 stealth bombers to the US island territory of Guam in the Pacific Ocean as President Donald Trump continues to weigh whether to join Israel in launching offensive air strikes on Iranian nuclear sites. The large jets are considered to be the only aircraft capable of carrying weapons that can strike Iran's most secure nuclear facility, which is buried deep underground below a mountain. US officials have not commented on whether the deployment is linked to the conflict in the Middle East. On Friday, Trump said he would give Iran a maximum of two weeks to make a deal to limit its nuclear programme in order to prevent US strikes. The planes are being sent to Guam from the US state of Missouri. While the deployment is not being officially connected to discussions around the US joining Israel's war on Iran, few will doubt the link. The huge planes, which have wingspans of more than 50 metres, are the only aircraft capable of carrying the GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator, a 30,000lb (13,608kg) bunker-busting bomb that experts say is required to destroy Iran's deep nuclear facility at Fordo. The facility is thought to be buried around 100m below the surface, protected by reinforced concrete. Despite their overwhelming aerial superiority, Israel lacks the munitions to damage the facility, hence requiring US support. Around 9,500km (5,900m) to the east of Fordo, Guam is maybe not the most obvious base from which to launch any attack. There had also been speculation that the UK facility, Diego Garcia, which is twice as close to Iran than Guam, might be used as a staging post. That would have caused a potential political and diplomatic headache for the British government, as they would have to give their blessing to any US attack, which might in turn make UK bases a target for Iranian retaliation. It is unclear why Guam was chosen as a destination for the bombers. US officials told the BBC's US partner, CBS News, that it is thought that the Guam base would provide better operational secrecy than Diego Garcia. Last week, at least 30 US military planes were moved from the US to Europe, according to flight tracking data reviewed by the BBC. The planes in question are all US military tanker aircraft used to re-fuel fighter jets and bombers. According to Flightradar24, at least seven of these - all KC-135s - stopped off in US airbases in Spain, Scotland and England. The jet movements come amid reports that the US has also moved an aircraft carrier - the USS Nimitz - from the South China Sea towards the Middle East. The Nimitz carries a contingent of fighter jets and is escorted by several guided missile destroyers. The US has also moved F-16, F-22 and F-35 fighter jets to bases in the Middle East, three defence officials told Reuters on Tuesday. Vietnam, US hold negotiations on new trade deal, ministry says
HANOI (Reuters) -Vietnam and the United States held an online round of negotiations on a new trade deal on Thursday night, the Ministry of Industry and Trade said on Friday. During the negotiations with U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, Vietnamese trade minister Nguyen Hong Dien asked the U.S. to review "reciprocal tariffs" and market access for Vietnam's key exports, the ministry said in a statement. The Southeast Asian industrial hub has held several rounds of negotiations with the U.S. to strike a deal that would allow Vietnamese goods to avoid a 46% tariff rate, imposed largely as a result of its big trade surplus with Washington. "The negotiation round was conducted in a candid, friendly and constructive manner," the ministry said. Minister Dien also welcomed proposals from Lutnick and Greer during their talks, the ministry added without elaborating. Dien said Vietnam wants to develop with the U.S. a set of practical and harmonious rules of origin of goods that is in line with global supply chains, according to the statement.
