SF Giants send message in obtaining Rafael Devers from Boston Red Sox

June 16 (UPI) -- The San Francisco Giants sent their clubhouse a major message by pulling the trigger on a blockbuster trade for Boston Red Sox All-Star infielder Rafael Devers, shortstop Willy Adames said.
"I feel like it sends a message out there that we are going to compete," Adames said of the trade. "We are going to do whatever it takes to try to come over here and win the division."
Adames made the comments on the ESPN broadcast of the Giants' 5-4 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday in Los Angeles. Giants players got word of the trade 15 minutes before the game at Dodger Stadium.
The Giants agreed to send left-handed pitcher Kyle Harrison, right-handed pitcher Jordan Hicks, outfielder prospect James Tibbs III and right-handed pitching prospect Jose Bello the Red Sox in exchange for the three-time All-Star.
The Giants (41-31) sit in second place in the National League West, two games behind the division-leading Dodgers (43-29). They also are in second place in the National League Wild Card race, which includes the Philadelphia Phillies (42-29) and San Diego Padres (39-31), among others.
Devers, 28, signed a 10-year, $313.5 million pact with the Red Sox in 2023, but the relationship experienced turbulence this off-season when he was asked to move from third base to make way for recently acquired infielder Alex Bregman.
He initially said he would not move into a designated hitter role, but eventually relented and changed positions. Devers then told the Red Sox that he also would not play first base after a void formed at that position due to Triston Casas' season-ending knee injury.
Devers appeared in 951 games at third base for the Red Sox through the first eight years of his career. He was their designated hitter for all 73 of his appearances this season.
He is expected to fill in at designated hitter and third base for the Giants. Giants All-Star third baseman Matt Chapman is on the injured list because of a right hand injury he sustained during a win over the Atlanta Braves on June 8 in San Francisco.
Casey Schmitt filled in at third base for the Giants on Sunday, but fouled a ball off his ankle and left the game early. Dominic Smith and Wilmer Flores served as the Giants' respective first baseman and designated hitter.
Smith started 11 games at first base this season. Flores appeared as a designated hitter 63 times and at first base four times this season. Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey said Devers' position with his new team will be discussed internally.
"That's a conversation for myself, Bob and [general manager] Zack Minasian to have with him," Posey told reporters, according to MLB.com.
The Giants will host the Cleveland Guardians (35-35) at 9:45 p.m. EDT Tuesday in San Francisco.

NEW YORK — Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman likely will be sidelined until after the All-Star break because of a strained left oblique, and infielder Jordan Westburg will be out for at least a few days because of a sprained left index finger sustained even though he wore a sliding mitt. Rutschman felt pain during batting practice on Friday and was scratched. He had an MRI on Saturday. 'He feels something small right there. We all know abdominal and oblique injuries, if you push those things, you can get really ugly. Instead of being three, four weeks, it could be three months,' interim manager Tony Mansolino said Sunday. 'He's kind of going stir crazy. I think the fact that it is mild in nature probably makes it a little harder for him,' Mansolino added. 'They went and got an MRI. They checked it out, which validated that. In his mind, he probably thinks he can possibly go out there, but obviously we know medically that's not the smart thing to do for him right now.' On the injured list for the first time in his big league career, Rutschman is hitting .227 with eight homers and 20 RBIs in 68 games. Westburg injured the finger while stealing second base in Saturday's 9-0 loss to the New York Yankees. 'Actually the sliding mitt that's supposed to protect his hand, that's the one that he did it,' interim manager Tony Mansolino said Sunday. 'Doesn't know how he did it. It's been the same mitt that he's used for a couple years, talking about it this morning. Kind of crazy that he hurt his finger. That's what those things are for.' Westburg missed more than a month with a left hamstring strain before returning on June 10. The 26-year-old is hitting .229 with seven homers and 17 RBIs in 34 games this season. He had 10 hits in his first 25 at-bats before going hitless in his next 14. 'It's sore this morning. We're hoping it's two to three days. If it gets to be longer, then it'll be another conversation at that point,' Mansolino said. 'The X-rays were negative, so it's not fractured. That's the positive. So nothing catastrophic by any means.' Westburg hit .264 with 18 homers and 63 RBIs last year, becoming a first-time All-Star. First baseman Ryan Mountcastle (strained right hamstring) also is on the injured list along with outfielders Tyler O'Neill (left shoulder impingement) and Jorge Mateo (left shoulder inflammation). Right-hander Yannier Cano was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk after striking out the side in the seventh inning Saturday, and right-hander Yaramil Hiraldo was recalled from the Tides on Sunday. 'It starts ultimately with the amount of innings that we've had covered here recently with the bullpen,' Mansolino said. 'We need a fresh arm. You have limited amount of bullpen guys that have options.'

Heat again comes up empty in pursuit of Kevin Durant. Suns trading Durant to Rockets

The Miami Heat again pursued future Hall of Famer Kevin Durant, but the Heat again missed out on the 15-time All-Star forward. The Phoenix Suns are trading Durant to the Houston Rockets, ESPN's Shams Charania reported on Sunday afternoon. The Rockets are sending Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, the No. 10 overall pick in this year's NBA Draft and five second-round picks to the Suns to land Durant, according to ESPN. The Heat was among the teams that engaged the Suns on a potential trade for Durant after being eliminated in the first round of the playoffs in each of the last two seasons. But Miami was only willing to go so far in what players and picks it included in its offer for Durant at this stage of his career, as he'll turn 37 years old on Sept. 29. The Heat improved its initial offer for Durant and that offer received serious consideration, according to a source close to the situation. But in the end, the Suns chose to take the Rockets' offer. This marked at least the fourth time that Miami has attempted to add Durant to its roster over the past decade. The Heat tried to land Durant in free agency during the 2016 offseason (he ended up signing with the Golden State Warriors), then tried to acquire him in 2022 (when he requested a trade from the Brooklyn Nets and then ended up being traded to the Suns), and then made an offer for him this past season ahead of the February trade deadline (the Suns ended up keeping Durant for the rest of the season) before again pursuing him early this offseason but again coming up empty. The addition of Durant would have helped the Heat's struggling offense, as Miami has finished with a bottom-10 offensive rating in each of the last three regular seasons. Durant is still one of the NBA's elite scorers even at the back-end of his career. He averaged 26.6 points, six rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.2 blocks per game while shooting 52.7% from the field and 43 percent on six three-point attempts per game this past season for Suns in his 17th NBA season. Durant and three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic were the only two players in the league who averaged at least 25 points per game while shooting better than 50% from the field and better than 40 percent from three-point range last regular season. Instead, the Heat enters the busy part of the NBA offseason still searching for avenues to improve its roster. Aside from being armed with the No. 20 overall pick in Wednesday's first round of the NBA Draft, the Heat also already has 13 players under standard contracts for next season: Bam Adebayo, Tyler Herro, Andrew Wiggins, Terry Rozier, Duncan Robinson, Kyle Anderson, Haywood Highsmith, Nikola Jovic, Kel'el Ware, Kevin Love, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Pelle Larsson and Keshad Johnson (fully nonguaranteed $2 million salary for next season). The only two players on the Heat's season-ending 15-man standard roster who are set to enter free agency this summer are Davion Mitchell (restricted free agent) and Alec Burks (unrestricted free agent). The Heat is currently operating above the salary cap and stands just $4 million away from the luxury-tax threshold. Unless the Heat sheds salary, it would only have minimum contracts, one of the midlevel exceptions (either the $14.1 million non-taxpayer midlevel exception or the $5.7 taxpayer million mid-level exception) and possibly the $5.1 million bi-annual exception to offer outside free agents this offseason. The two-round NBA Draft will be held on Wednesday (first round) and Thursday (second round), with league-wide free-agent negotiations allowed to begin on June 30 at 6 p.m.
