Exco: Boon Siew Villa not under Unesco, state, or national protection list

Boon Siew Villa in Batu Ferringhi, which was recently demolished to make way for a luxury condominium project, is outside the George Town United Nationas Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation World Heritage Site, a state executive councillor said.
State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said the property, once the residence of Tan Sri Loh Boon Siew, known as 'Mr Honda', was not listed under national or state heritage protection.
"The private property is outside George Town's World Heritage Area," he told the New Straits Times.
The demolition of the villa has sparked strong reactions from heritage advocates and Penangites, who see the loss as another blow to the island's cultural identity.
The villa, regarded as a symbol of Penang's colonial-era architecture, was listed in the Penang Built Heritage Inventory in 2012.
On whether the property should have been protected, Wong said there were other landmarks, such as Wisma Boon Siew and Jalan Loh Boon Siew, that still existed in the state capital here.
"There are many properties and land banks under the family of Tan Sri Loh Boon Siew. There is even one Boon Siew Building in neighbouring Singapore."
Earlier this week, the state government confirmed that all technical and safety requirements had been met for the luxury condominium project, despite public concern over traffic congestion and safety in the area.
Last October, it was reported that Singaporean real estate and lodging company The Ascott Ltd was partnering with Malaysian developer Instant Icon Sdn Bhd to develop Ascott Residences Batu Ferringhi, which is set to welcome residents from January 2028.
Ascott country general manager for Malaysia, Mondi Mecja, had said that the greenfield development would feature 99 residences for sale and the project was expected to break new ground in Penang's luxury living market, with a strong focus on owner occupation.
The development would feature a diverse selection of spacious living options, ranging from 185sq m to 370sq m, along with a penthouse exceeding 740sq m.

"The state heritage enactment and local council guidelines have ensured that heritage buildings are safeguarded. "We're now also moving beyond that into the area of intangible cultural heritage," he pointed out. Wong said the state was strict regarding projects and developments, particularly within the 109.38ha core heritage zone, which is roughly bordered by Carnarvon Street, Malay Street and Love Lane, and stretches to the waterfront. However, he said he had read about some issues with similar heritage buildings in Melaka. He called on authorities and stakeholders there to continue adhering to Unesco's heritage building guidelines to preserve the heritage status of both cities. Melaka and George Town were jointly inscribed together as a Unesco World Heritage Site in July 2008, so both cities must meet criteria to maintain their status. Just like in Penang, various groups and individuals in Melaka had also expressed concern that gentrification and commercial development would threaten the cities' joint listing. Wong said Penang's success in maintaining the outstanding universal values of George Town was due to the tireless efforts of various bodies such as George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI), which was set up in 2010 to spearhead efforts in safeguarding, managing and promoting the city.

Women's business bootcamp opens for registration

GEORGE TOWN: More women entrepreneurs, including single mothers, are urged to register as participants in the Penang Women Entrepreneurs Mentoring Pro­gramme 2025 (PenMentor2025) with the registration deadline set for July 31. Penang social development, welfare and non-Muslim affairs committee chairman Lim Siew Khim said the programme, organised by the Penang Women Development Corporation (PWDC), aimed to help women gain business knowledge and expand their businesses. 'PenMentor is a programme that offers intensive training, mentoring and networking opportunities for women entrepreneurs. Since its inception in 2020, more than 350 participants have benefited from the programme. 'Last year, we recorded a 50% increase in average sales among participants who comple­ted the programme, proving that the right guidance and support can deliver tangible results,' she said in a statement yesterday, Bernama reported. She said PenMentor, which is now in its sixth year, would also focus on enhancing digital literacy among women entrepreneurs to help them stay competitive in the rapidly changing economy. Meanwhile, PWDC chief executive officer Datuk Ong Bee Leng said PenMentor would run for three months from August to October this year, featuring a four-day Intensive Entrepre­neurship Course and six mentoring sessions. 'The mentees will be divided into sub-groups consisting of eight mentees and two mentors, who will be selected from various industry backgrounds and with about five years of experience in their respective fields.' Ong said this year's PenMentor places greater emphasis on digital marketing, with the module conducted by Digital Penang. The topics covered will include platforms like TikTok Shop, Canva and Capcut. Among the eligibility criteria is that applicants must be Penangites and Malaysian citizens aged 18 and above. The registration fee is RM200 for the B40 group and RM400 for the M40 and T20 groups.

Melaka should uphold heritage preservation standards, says Penang exco

GEORGE TOWN: Penang urges Melaka to follow heritage conservation guidelines in order to protect their joint listing as Unesco World Heritage sites. Penang Tourism Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said the state was committed to heritage conservation since it launched the George Town World Heritage Incorporated in 2008, which ensured that historic areas in George Town were protected under a strong legal framework. He said Penang had enacted comprehensive heritage laws, established conservation offices and implemented council guidelines to protect not only historic buildings but also intangible cultural heritage. "We have done quite a bit in terms of heritage protection, including this building and many others. "We are not only moving along with heritage conservation but also expanding into intangible cultural heritage. "Since George Town and Melaka share a joint Unesco World Heritage (listing), Melaka is equally responsible for complying with building and conservation guidelines to ensure the integrity of the shared heritage status. "I read quite a bit about some of the building issues in Melaka. "So if there are issues in Melaka, they must follow the building guidelines as well," he said when announcing the George Town Celebrations 2025 here today. Wong did not specify the building issues in Melaka. He said the joint listing legally protected both sites and their heritage status remained secure. Wong's comments come amid renewed public discussion around the preservation of historic sites and the need for balanced development. George Town and Melaka were jointly inscribed as United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation World Heritage Sites in 2008. They were recognised as "Historic Cities of the Strait of Malacca" for their shared rich trading heritage and cultural exchange between East and West over 500 years. This year's George Town Celebrations — the 17th year of the annual heritage festival — is themed "Doors and Doorways".
