MCX hits new high, surges 27% in 1 month; what's behind the stock rally?

Shares of Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) hit an all-time high of ₹8,068.95, gaining 4 per cent on the BSE in Friday's intra-day trade. The stock price of India's leading Commodity Derivatives Exchange has surpassed its previous high of ₹8,033.30 touched on June 10, 2025. Thus far in the month of June, it has rallied 22 per cent.
In the past month, MCX has outperformed the market by surging 27 per cent, as compared to a 1.2 per cent rise in the BSE Sensex. In the past year, the market price of MCX zoomed 110 per cent, as against a 6 per cent gain in the benchmark index.
What's driving MCX stock price?
MCX's key growth drivers include new product launches, futures and options; continued volatility in key commodity prices (gold, crude oil, and natural gas) amid global uncertainties; and sustained growth momentum in retail participation in the options market, according to the analysts.
On June 6, 2025, MCX received approval from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) to launch Electricity Derivatives, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of India's Energy trading landscape. This development underscores the strong commitment and support of the Regulators - SEBI and Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) - in enabling a dynamic and sustainable power market, MCX said. The Electricity Derivatives Contracts to be introduced by MCX will enable generators, distribution companies, and large consumers to hedge against price volatility and manage price risks more effectively, by enhancing efficiency in the power market.
'This landmark move positions MCX as a torchbearer of innovation in commodity trading, while reinforcing India's ambition towards sustainable energy and capital market development. It also marks a pivotal step toward deepening India's energy markets and aligns with the broader vision of 'Viksit Bharat',' MCX said in an exchange filing.
ICICI Securities' view on MCX
MCX, since the start of the financial year 2025-26 (FY26), has witnessed a surge in options/futures volumes. For the combined timeframe of April/May 2025, the options' notional average daily turnover value (ADTV) stood at ₹2.56 trillion (up 34 per cent versus FY25 notional ADTV). Options Premium ADTV stood at ₹4,130 crore (up 33 per cent versus FY25 premium ADTV). Futures ADTV stood at ₹40,700 crore (up 50.5 per cent versus FY25 futures ADTV).
The majority increase in volumes was driven by a strong surge in gold volumes, where notional/premium/futures ADTV increased 218 per cent/283 per cent/161 per cent in the first two months of FY26 versus FY25. This strong surge in gold volumes stemmed primarily from the modification in gold options contracts to monthly expiry contracts (prior bi-monthly) effective November 11, 2024. Momentum seen in April/May 2025 continued in the first two weeks of June.
Passage of key regulations such as the New Equity Derivatives Framework in November 2024, the New Risk monitoring Framework for Equity Derivatives in May and finalisation of expiry for equity derivatives in June, imply a stable outlook ahead for exchanges, the brokerage firm said.

K'taka Minister Kharge writes to EAM Jaishankar seeking clarification on denial of clearance for US visit

Bengaluru: Minister for RDPR, IT and BT, Priyank Kharge, has written a letter to the External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Friday seeking clarification on denial of political clearance for an official visit to the United States. In his letter, Minister Kharge stated, 'I am writing to seek a formal clarification from the Ministry of External Affairs on the denial of political clearance for my scheduled official visit to the United States from June 14-27, 2025." "The visit was planned around two significant international forums, the BIO International Convention in Boston and the Design Automation Conference (DAC) in San Francisco, as well as several official meetings with top companies, universities and institutions, where I was to represent the Government of Karnataka to explore collaborations, attract investments and create employment opportunities for the state,' he said. "In the absence of a formal communication from the Ministry outlining the reasons for denial, it becomes difficult to assess and plan future engagements of this nature. It also raises concerns about the consistency of the process, especially when the visits are official, sector-critical and in National Interest," Minister Kharge noted. 'I would, therefore, request the Ministry to kindly provide a formal explanation for the denial and consider a more transparent and consultative approach in handling such official engagements in the future,' Priyank Kharge demanded. Karnataka is the technology capital and growth engine of not just India, but the Asia-Pacific region. It has emerged as a global leader in innovation and start-ups, consistently maintaining its position at the forefront of information technology, biotechnology, electronics design and manufacturing, aerospace, space technology and Defence production, he further stated. This leadership has been built through a dynamic ecosystem powered by forward-looking State-led policies and deep global partnerships, earning Karnataka its status as a preferred destination for international collaboration and investment, Kharge stated. "Given Karnataka's unique leadership as stated above, the absence of ministerial-level representation during an official visit of such significance is a lost opportunity to further elevate India's engagement, strengthen confidence among global partners and demonstrate the seriousness with which we approach these sectors. More importantly, participation in such visits are aligned with our National priorities and would have directly supported the larger vision of 'Viksit Bharat' laid out by the Prime Minister," Kharge emphasised. Commenting on the Central government's denial of permission for his visit to the US, Minister Priyank Kharge had stated on Thursday that the NDA government was attempting to undermine Karnataka's success. Speaking to reporters at the Bengaluru International Airport after returning from a tour of Paris, Priyank Kharge had said, 'It seems they are trying to prevent Karnataka's success.' 'It is okay if they reject the permission, but there must be valid reasons for doing so. If they provide appropriate reasons, it becomes acceptable. However, the categorical denial of permission for the US visit is not right,' he stated. 'We were not going to the US to play 'Dandiya' (a traditional dance form). I will meet Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to discuss this matter. After the discussion, we will brief the media,' he said. "The Central government must provide valid reasons for refusing the visit to the US. Initially, the entire delegation was denied permission. Later, the delegation was cleared, but I was still denied permission,' Kharge said.

Sensex jumps 1.3%, Nifty ends above 25,100

Domestic benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty surged 1.3 per cent on Friday as investors' risk appetite improved after reports suggested de-escalation in Israel-Iran conflict. The BSE's Sensex rose 1.29 per cent, or 1,046.3 points, to close at 82,408.17. The broader Nifty climbed 1.29 per cent, or 319.15 points, to end at 25,112.4. 'Markets showed strength and gained over a percent after three sessions of lackluster movement. Sentiment improved after the news report indicated a possible de-escalation in the Iran-Israel conflict, with the US signaling a delay in potential action, which led to a softening in crude oil prices,' the said Ajit Mishra, Senior Vice President, Research, Religare Broking Ltd. US President Donald Trump has said that a decision on whether or not the US will get directly involved in the Iran-Israel conflict within two weeks, according to media reports. Markets witnessed consolidation after the recent spell of subdued trend, as strong European cues and positive Dow Futures triggered a massive rally in local benchmarks. 'Investors also resorted to short covering ahead of next week's monthly derivatives expiry. Despite the rebound, investors would still maintain caution due to the ongoing West Asia conflict, as any spike in crude oil prices owing to escalation in tension could fuel uncertainty and spook markets,' said Prashanth Tapse, Senior VP (Research), Mehta Equities Ltd. Additionally, consistent buying by FIIs in the cash segment further supported the market. All key sectors participated in the rally, with realty, financials, and metals emerging as top gainers. The broader indices also saw relief, posting gains in the range of 1-1.4 per cent. The Nifty Realty ended 2.11 per cent up and the Nifty Metal climbed 1.09 per cent. The Nifty Midcap 100 rose 1.46 per cent and the Nifty Smallcap 100 gained 1.01 per cent. India VIX, which is an indicator of the market's expectation of volatility over the near term, declined 4.08 per cent to 13.67. The NSE companies that gained the most included Trent (3.96 per cent), Jio Financial Services (3.31 per cent), Mahindra & Mahindra (3.07 per cent), Bharti Airtel ( 3.04 per cent) and Nestle India (2.77 per cent). According to Religare Broking's Mishra, the outlook remains positive, and a decisive move above 25,200 on the Nifty would signal the end of the ongoing five-week consolidation phase and open the path toward the 25,600–25,800 zone. In the absence of any major domestic events, global markets will continue to guide sentiment. 'We maintain our positive yet cautious stance and advise focusing on stock selection, particularly in line with sectoral trends,' he said.
