Old-fashioned baby names are roaring back into fashion — and experts say they know why

New York Post15-05-2025

In recent years, out-there, creative or trendy baby names were all the rage — now it seems like the classic, old-fashioned ones are popular again.
According to Jennifer Moss, founder and CEO of BabyNames.com and baby-name consultant Taylor A. Humphrey, grandma-like names such as Eleanor, Eloise, Elodie, Alma, Margaret, Nora and Bennett, are 'super trendy' for girls this year, originally reported by Yahoo! Life.
'On the boys' side, we're seeing the 'trad name,' or old-fashioned names, stick — like Theodore, Oliver, Owen, Silas and Jasper,' she told the outlet.

'…I'm hearing Hayes, Lachlan, Palmer, Soren, Sterling and Theodore,' added Humphrey.
'These names feel grounded, elegant and sturdy; they offer just the right mix of vintage soul and modern edge.'

Why are these old-fashioned names gaining traction again?
'I think vintage names evoke a sense of nostalgia. I get a lot of clients who pull out their family tree, looking to grandparents and great-grandparents for name inspiration,' Colleen Slagen, author of the forthcoming book 'Naming Bebe,' also told Yahoo!
'…Nursing homes and graveyards would be great sources of name inspiration.'
And according to Sophie Kihm, editor-in-chief of Nameberry, a baby naming website, today's parents are leaning more towards simpler names for their babies.

'More families in the US come from mixed cultural backgrounds, and I hear parents commonly request that they want their child to travel and have a relatively easy-to-understand name,' she said.
In regards to which names are getting the baby bump, at least for a while — ones with 'aden' in it, like Braden or Jayden, according to the experts.

'I do hear less of those names now,' said Slagen. 'I think they hit their peak in the early 2000s.'

Before you get offended if your name is no longer favored, Humphrey pointed out that popularity in certain baby names always ebbs and flows — similar to fashion trends.
'As with fashion, baby names follow emotional and aesthetic cycles — and as collective tastes shift, so do our naming desires.'
However, despite old-school names like Eloise and Margaret making a comeback, Liam and Olivia remain two of the most popular names, according to the Social Security Administration.
Liam has held the No. 1 spot for boys' names for eight years in a row. Olivia has held that title for the girls for the last six.
Emma and Noah came in at No. 2 for the sixth year in a row.
If you're looking for some inspo on what to name your newborn — old-school or not — you can scroll the complete list of baby names on the Social Security website.

I Finally Found a Plush But Put-Together Sectional

"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links." For the last seven years, I have been the proud owner of the couch. A fifteen-foot wide, six-piece, extra deep modular sectional wrapped in a delicious linen. (You know the one.) My now-husband and I bought it right after we got engaged and, immediately, got comfortable. Plenty of room to stretch out, sleep, or pack on friends during a party. It was especially appreciated during the Covid years when, living in New York City, couch time reached an all-time high. But, like all things, the piece ran its course. It began to bother me that when my parents were in town visiting, they would complain about getting on and off the notoriously low rise. The slouchiness, which once read as chic and casual, began to look sloppy. As my babies became toddlers, stains began to proliferate. When my husband and I moved this spring, I decided it was time for something new. I still loved the idea of a fluffy cream-colored sectional, but I wanted something more upright and with a higher seat. And, with two kids, a performance fabric would go a long way. Enter: the Sundays Get Together 5-Piece Sectional.$7930.00 at Founded in 2019 in Vancouver, Sundays makes west coast modern pieces that are neither too west coast nor too modern. Here, "west coast modern" really just means relaxed. Unfussy. They have clean lines, minimal frills, and are made from high-quality materials (FSC-certified wood, no sag springs, upholstery without any flame retardants). I got my first item from the brand in 2023—an oversized reading chair for my daughter's room—and I have been impressed by how it has stood up to toddler antics (read: snacks, spilled milk, general roughhousing). It felt like the leap to sofa was worth exploring. The Get Together Sectional is not the brand's only sectional, and they do have options that are more like my former sofa (the Movie Night Sectional, particularly). But even though this piece would be for my den, I still wanted something with a bit more structure. The Get Together seemed like the best balance of welcoming and well-kept. Now several months into having the piece in my home, I feel prepared to offer my full endorsement. Here's why. Delivery is always included in the price of your purchase at Sundays. For anyone who has grown attached to a listing online just to finally hit check-out and suddenly see an exorbitant and unexpected add-on for white glove delivery, you'll know how much a policy like this is appreciated. I found the shippers particularly accommodating in finding a date that worked for me to receive the piece as my move date became a bit of a moving target. Assembly was also included in my delivery and could not have gone smoother. The team helped my husband situate the couch in our new space and was patient about making sure the end result felt correct and that we were certain about how it was situated. No rushing at all. The truth is I got exactly what I was looking for: a plush sectional that is easy to flop on at the end of the night or sit upright on as I tap, tap, tap away at my keyboard, like I am right now. The sectional is a modular arrangement, which means there are several ways to set it up. I chose the five-piece option with a corner arrangement, meaning each piece has a back and the two end pieces have armrests (in other words, it does not have an ottoman tacked onto either end). The standard size, which is what I have, is 114" wide and and 114" deep and 37" high with a seat depth of 25". This is a big change from our previous sectional—and there is a larger size of this arrangement I could have chosen, but I am incredibly happy with how this sofa fills my space. The first week of sitting on my sofa, I will admit I wondered if there was any give expected in the cushions. You didn't bounce off when you sat down, but you didn't sink in, either. A few months later, they've broken ever-so-perfectly. The cushions don't require any fluffing, but the seats have relaxed just a hair. Happy to support you, should you want to be horizontal for a nap or propped up for a show. (I am also happy to report that my own parents have both sat down and stood up, no complaints, thanks to the high frame.) My previous couch actually washed pretty well given it wasn't a performance linen, but there were a few stains that crept up over the years that couldn't be fixed without damaging the fabric. The Sundays stain resistant fabric, however, is playing a different game. It's moisture-repellant—something my children tested immediately with cups of milk and water—and appropriate for the laundry machine (gentle cycle, mild detergent). I probably don't care enough about making sure all of the textiles in my home are non-toxic, but it is nice to know that one I spend so much time is made so cleanly. Absolutely. Furniture is painfully expensive these days—even the stuff made of crap. And it's been refreshing to embrace an investment piece that feels appropriately priced. (It's thousands of dollars less than my previous!) That I was a couple of years into another piece from the brand certainly quelled my anxiety in making such a big piece the focal part of such an important part of our home, but I am 100% confident I would buy other products from this brand for years to come.$7930.00 at You Might Also Like Kid Cudi Is All Right 16 Best Shoe Organizers For Storing and Displaying Your Kicks

Princess Beatrice Proves Pink Gingham Is in This Summer at Royal Ascot

"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links." Princess Beatrice and her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi were all smiles on the first day of Royal Ascot, one of the liveliest events of the royal family's summer calendar each year. It's also one of the best for summer fashion, from fabulous frocks to chic hats to suave suits. The princess did not disappoint, proving once again that gingham is always a solid choice for summer in a matching top and skirt set by Beulah London. There are only a few units left of the Arabella pink and white tweed skirt and the Gabriella top in the same print. However, there are more options of her outfit in other prints, such as the Arabella pink and navy polka dot skirt or navy rope skirt. (But if your heart is set on gingham, scroll to the bottom of this post for some similar options. We've got you covered.) Edo, meanwhile, went for a traditional English menswear look with a top hat and two-piece morning suit. Princess Beatrice was most recently seen at the Chelsea Flower Show, alongside her sister, Princess Eugenie. The sisters coordinated a floral look for the event, embracing it in sisterly style. Eugenie also attended a Buckingham Palace garden party in May alongside the Prince and Princess of Wales, while Beatrice stepped out with King Charles and Queen Camilla at an event raising money for the Elephant Family, an organization established by Queen Camilla's late brother, Mark Shand. Pssst, There's A Secret Stanley Cup Sale—So, Yes, I Blacked Out & Bought Everything

"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links." Somewhere along the way, we traded our wasteful single-use plastic water bottles for a viral emotional support cup that fits a full 40 ounces of wine H20. And while we, as a society, maybeeeee took things a lil too far with the Stanley Quencher craze (did a cup really warrant sobbing children on Christmas morning and $1,000 resale prices? Idts), that doesn't mean I don't proudly tote mine around like a designer handbag. While, thankfully, the cups aren't going for thousands of dollars on Poshmark (anymore), a tumbler can still run you $35 to $45 bucks, easy. Until today, that is. Stanley 1913 just quietly discounted summer-ready Quenchers, outdoor coolers, and even craft cocktail sets as part of its super secret sale. So, yeah, I'm about to blackout and buy the entire collection. Shop Now$27.00 at at Now, even though I have four tumblers already, I will be smashing "add to cart" on another. Naturally. The H2.0 Flowstate comes in comes in five size options total—14-ounce, 20-ounce, 30-ounce, 40-ounce, and 64-ounce—but that doesn't mean every version is currently on sale. Let's run through what is. The 30-ounce and 40-ounce are both 40% off in a ton of different shades—and you can even customize the design with your own monogram, photo, or unhinged phrase à la the boat tote trend. Both sizes have a double-wall vacuum insulation that will keep your drink cold for up to 11 hours—and ice solid for a full two days. The versatile lid lets you conveniently sip from the reusable straw, drink from a side opening, or seal it shut entirely to prevent spills. As a chronic spiller, I can confidently say it's a game-changer. The tumbler even has a comfort-grip handle that's sooo easy to carry around and a cup-holder-friendly design that fits any car. Tens of thousands of shoppers raved over the cup. "Love her, she's iconic, she keeps my drink cold for dayyyssss. 10/10 would purchase again!" one customer writes. "It keeps my water ice cold even in 100+ degree weather," another adds. "I like that when I flip the straw down, I can throw it in my bag and not worry about any leaks." And while, technically, you can fit a full bottle of vino in the classic 40-ounce Stanley Cup (seriously, I checked), if you want to appear, well, a little classier, there's an actual wine set on sale too. Do with that information what you will.$54.00 at at at at at at You Might Also Like Here's What NOT to Wear to a Wedding Meet the Laziest, Easiest Acne Routine You'll Ever Try
