Explosives used without alert ahead of Yogi Adityanath's Bahraich visit. BJP MLA flags ‘serious security lapse'

Two days ahead of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's proposed visit to Bahraich, a company authorised by the Union Petroleum Ministry allegedly used large quantity of explosives for drilling without informing the local administration, officials said.
Local BJP MLA Surveshvar Singh termed the incident a 'serious security lapse' and demanded cancellation of the chief minister's visit.
Sub-Divisional Magistrate Alok Prasad told news agency PTI that Alpha Geo India Limited was assigned the task of drilling and surveying for oil and gas deposits by the Petroleum Ministry. The firm used ammonium nitrate explosives for the survey.
Though the company was carrying out government-sanctioned work, it failed to follow the standard operating procedures (SOP) and did not inform the local administration, he said.
This caused panic among villagers and resentment among the public representatives. Upon receiving information, police and administrative staff reached the site and initiated an inquiry, the SDM added.
He said that around 200 employees of the company were working in different shifts across multiple villages, most of whom are from West Bengal and face a language barrier with the locals.
To ensure their safety amid growing tension, all employees were brought to the Hardi police station, he added.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Rural) Durga Prasad Tiwari said the company had drilled up to 30 metres underground using ammonium nitrate without prior intimation to villagers or authorities.
"Today, around 50-60 employees deployed on the field were called to the police station for questioning. No one has been detained so far. The decision on filing an FIR will be taken after further inquiry," he said.
Raising alarm, Mahsi MLA Sureshvar Singh said with the chief minister scheduled to visit on Tuesday, the presence of hundreds of outsiders and 500 kilograms of explosives in the district is highly concerning.
"Intelligence reports have warned of possible infiltration by 47 terrorists through the Indo-Nepal border. Imagine the security risk at an event where the chief minister and possibly the Prime Minister will be present, commemorating Maharaja Suheldev, he said.
The MLA said he had spoken to the state's Principal Secretary (Home) Sanjay Prasad and urged him to cancel the chief minister's visit until the matter is fully resolved.
This is a serious security lapse.
Kuldeep Sharma, a representative of Alpha Geo India Limited, admitted to the lapse.
"We had informed the concerned authorities back in February. However, we should have informed them again before commencing work involving explosives. Since today was Sunday, we proceeded without intimation, which was a mistake," he told the news agency PTI.

Nepal govt thanks S Jaishankar for India's ‘swift' efforts in evacuating Nepali nationals from war-hit Iran

Nepal's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Arzu Rana Deuba, on Saturday thanked India for its 'swift assistance in helping to evacuate Nepali nationals from Iran'. Tagging Union Minister of External Affairs Dr S Jaishankar, Deuba said that India's support in Nepal's evacuation efforts is a 'reflection of strength of Nepal-India ties'. India on June 18 announced the launch of 'Operation Sindhu' to evacuate its nationals from Iran after its conflict with Israel, which has entered its second week, showed no sign of letting up. The Indian Embassy in Iran on Saturday said that its evacuation efforts will also cover Nepal and Sri Lanka. In a post on X, the Embassy said, 'On request of the Governments of Nepal and Sri Lanka, the Indian Embassy's evacuation efforts in Iran will also cover Citizens of Nepal and Sri Lanka.' A Mahan Air evacuation flight carrying 256 Indian students, the majority from the Kashmir valley, landed safely at the Delhi airport on Saturday, bringing much-needed relief to their anxious families. According to a PTI report, the students, many of whom were stranded in Iran amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, appeared visibly exhausted but relieved after enduring days of fear and uncertainty in the conflict zone. "Thanks to the Government of India for its efforts and timely coordination with Iranian authorities. We remain committed to ensuring the safe evacuation of all remaining students, especially those from vulnerable and remote regions," the Jammu and Kashmir Students' Association said in a statement. The association also confirmed that another evacuation flight carrying Indian students is expected to arrive in the national capital around 11:30 pm. This was the second flight bringing back Indians from Iran within 24 hours under Operation Sindhu. Another flight from Iran's Mashhad, with 290 Indian students, mostly from Jammu and Kashmir landed in Delhi late on Friday night, the report added. The Indian authorities, in coordination with their Iranian counterparts, facilitated the movement of stranded students from Tehran to Mashhad before boarding. Iran also opened its airspace in a special gesture to support the evacuation. In all, nearly 1,000 Indian nationals are being brought home through a series of special flights. On Thursday, 110 students were flown out via Armenia and Doha. Two additional flights, including one from Turkmenistan's capital Ashgabat (expected arrival around 3 am on Sunday), are also scheduled, a PTI report said.

Agra: ASI waives off entry fee for Taj Mahal on International Yoga Day

The Archaeological Survey of India, which is responsible for maintaining ancient monuments and archaeological sites, has waived the entry fee for the Taj Mahal. The ASI typically waives the entry fee to the Taj Mahal on special occasions such as World Heritage Day, celebrated on April 18th, and during Urs, Shah Jahan's death anniversary. But on the eve of International Day of Yoga, they have made entry to the Taj Mahal free, bringing cultural and wellness together. Along with the Taj Mahal, entry to several other historical monuments, such as Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri, Sikandra, and Etmad-ud-Daula, is free. On the International Day of Yoga, people are participating in yoga events all over India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi performed Yoga in in Visakhapatnam and urged the international community to embrace 'inner peace' as a 'global policy' and make yoga a collective global responsibility.
